| Yes, you're reading right: MorphOS 2.8 is cancelled and MorphOS 2.7 will be the last 2.x version. But MorphOS is not abandonned instead the next release wil be 3.0. It will probably arrive not before December. Beside many new other feature it will support Powerbooks from the 5.6 version on and include new 3d drivers. Upgrading from 2.x will stay *free* of charge. _________________ My programs: via.bckrs.de MorphOS user since V0.4 (2001) |

Great !
Too bad it won't support the IBook G4 (but I know it's rather difficult to support this one). _________________ PowerMac G5 2,7Ghz - 2GB - Radeon 9650 - MorphOS 3.14 AmigaONE X1000, 2GB, Sapphire Radeon HD 7700 FPGA Replay + DB 68060 at 85Mhz |

What is the reason for jumping from 2.x to 3.x then? Following Firefox's new version numbering scheme? _________________ Author of the PortablE programming language. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue... |

Probably to reflect the number and significance of new features. Also I believe that 2.x releases are free updates and 2.0 is now over 3 years old now so it's about time for a paid for update. |

Accumulated bunch of updates, enhancements and new features maybe? Full support for a new class of hardware (laptops), new 3d drivers, MUI update, new editor, build in cd/dvd burning capacities, WLAN drivers. Dunno. They may call it version foo.bar, I don't care as long as there is progress. I think teh decision to cal it 3.0 has just developed over time. the internal deveolper version is called 3.x since quite a while. But recent updates were downnumbered to 2.x. Maybe the team just felt, that with the next update it will eb time to jump teh release number to teh current development number. We may hear the details a bit later. But obviously the reason is not charging money again - which IMHO makes pretty much sense with the one machine one license policy.

The update to 3.x wil be free of charge for 2.x users. The key remains valid._________________ My programs: via.bckrs.de MorphOS user since V0.4 (2001) |

Of course it would be nice if MorphOS supported this and that plus a cow. But Powerbooks are easily and cheaply obtainable through the various selling points. I think a 15" 1.67 GHz PB goes for about 250 EUR on ebay in most European countries and for about 250 US$ in the U.S.. Hence, no big deal to get the supported hardware. Of course one should inspect the hardware carefully before registering. _________________ My programs: via.bckrs.de MorphOS user since V0.4 (2001) |

Is G5 support slated for v3 do you suppose? I recall seeing a developer version of 2.7 (I think) running on one. Although G5's have gotten a bit of a bad rep for reliability, it would still be pretty cool to see it out in the wild. _________________ Doing stupid things for fun... |

I don't think G5 powermacs will be supported with the initial 3.x release. A 3.x developer version has been shown a good year ago first on some G5 Powemac and a bit later on a G5 iMac. IMHO the G5 iMac is particularly intersting since it is rather energy efficient - the 2.1 GHz version consumes only about 70-90W (depending on load) *incl.* display. But the focus on recent driver development has been to finalize powerbook support AFAIK. _________________ My programs: via.bckrs.de MorphOS user since V0.4 (2001) |

The G5 Morphos demo was a proof of concept project. Most core dev resources are spent on Powerbook full support, which is quite impressive. I'm sure a G5 version may eventually surface but not for some time.. |

G5 support is not under development. The focus is now on "MorphBook". The MorphOS world is going to portables and Amiganoid 2011 event made it clear the future is on small desktops or laptops...

| I'm really looking forward to the Powerbook support, although I like my remaining MorphOS machines (Powermac G4 and Efika) very much.
I hope there'll be some cool features for the other systems, too.

| My main request (after G4 PowerBook support is released) is for wireless LAN support in MorphOS3.x.
I don't much care how, or which wireless NIC's are supported, as long as I can do it from my G4 PowerBook while running MorphOS.
Hopefully with Neil Cafferkey's recent work on AROS and the Prism2 native driver he wrote for MorphOS, there will be an official supported wireless NIC of one kind or another soon.

There are no plans to do any G5 work. It could still happen at some point, but at least for now we're not wasting any resources on that. |
