You need to have a look at the manual - IIRC it's set using the jumpers on the motherboard. I've never messed with them, but there is a description of them in the manual... I'm sure the manual's easy to find, but if not I have it on my machine at home and can send you a copy if you're stuck. _________________ RobTheNerd.com | InstallerGen | SMBMounter | Atoms-X |

| hmmm, so besides a fried CPU and broke MB the RAM could be faulty, the NEW battery could be to low on voltage.
Tomorrow I might get a Null modem cable, are they called the same in the 'normal' non amiga world ?
btw, i never had isues like these....... Last night I was using it without problems, and this morning it didn't show Uboot anymore.

| The old battery voltage is about 3 volts, and the new one about 3.2 volts _________________ Theres a time to live and a time to die When its time to meet the maker Theres a time to live but isnt it strange That as soon as you're born you're dying |

The old ones borderline and the new one is good then.
Before reinstering inspect the battery holder to see if it 's still correctly attached, I think there is a mild risk of damage to this componemt when changing battery.
If you have removed ram etc, very carefully dust the sockets (I mean very!) then try reinserting the RAM (and gfx card if you removed that) then try an reboot.
NB only do the above if you have allready removed things, wait till you've tested with serial cable otherwise, and yes NUll-Modem is the standard name outside the miggy world.

I removed all dust, wasnt that much, all contacts of the RAM module and GFX board seem nice and intact, I reseated them, push the CPU module, it seemed fermly connected, the fan spins happily, ther's agreen LED working near the floppy connector (wich I do not have) I tried 2 other PSU's the battery connector seems intact
Later I'll test the radeon and the A1's PSU on my pc.
Damn I wih there was an Amiga store near like the old days.... And that I could get memory modules everywhere...... _________________ Theres a time to live and a time to die When its time to meet the maker Theres a time to live but isnt it strange That as soon as you're born you're dying |

| Is it at all posible that the CPU could die from one moment to another ? Without acting up first ?
Any know what replacing the module by Acube costs ?

Try not to worry too much about the CPU just yet. As others have suggested, the first thing is to get that null-modem lead and see what output you get from the serial port.
There's plenty of info on XE problems if you search the forums

| Got a mail from Acube telling me that they stopped exchanging cpu modules years ago, because the used cpu's arent available anymore.

There isnt anything left anymore but the ram, the cpu, the gfx board and the uboot chip... _________________ Theres a time to live and a time to die When its time to meet the maker Theres a time to live but isnt it strange That as soon as you're born you're dying |

If you want to try an experiment, you could try applying light pressure to various components, and hold the pressure while the XE is booting.
Try the U-Boot chip first, then each corner of the CPU daughterboard.
Do take great care though!

Doesnt seem to work....
Wish I had a working system I could use to swap components, but then I wouldnt need to....

You can verify the battery holder is good by putting the voltmeter leads between the case chassis & the top of the battery, you should read 3 plus volts. Some ppl have had the ground pin to the bd broken on the holder.
The other cause I've read about is the uboot chip not making good contact with the socket. They make a small tool to remove chips or if you're real carefull, you can slowly remove it with a small screw driver & re-insert it. Just note the polarity. _________________ Hate tends to make you look stupid... |

ok, battery holder is fine, checked it like you said.
Tomorrow I'll remove and reseat the uboot chip. Is there a way to check if it is still configured correctly or erased or broken or whatever ?
I'll leave everything unplugged for a day or so (shouldnt matter, a few minutes should be enough regarding RC times) Hopefully I'll have a null modem cable tomorrow, to check serial output.
Thanks to everybody for trying to help !

I don't know of any way to check its contents, there was a place to buy a replacement, can't remember where off hand. _________________ Hate tends to make you look stupid... |

Once I got a new chip from computercity in rotterdam (netherlands) but that shop went all pc...
I found new A1XE memory (2x1Gb) at Alinea for about 190 Euros. I hope My CPU is working, and I only have to replace the RAM. As those are the most likely suspects for me. Ofcourse I hope its something simpler and cheaper.....

| I've been thinking....
Could it be that the battery died and because I left it turned of overnight, the Uboot chip or the NV RAM (does that exist?) got scrambled or erased due to lack of battery power, so when I turned the A1 on the next morning it couldnt boot ?
Is that at all feasable ?
Perhaps I can test the RAM module in my PC ? Last edited by Metalheart on 06-Feb-2012 at 09:03 PM. Last edited by Metalheart on 06-Feb-2012 at 09:00 PM.
