| Disappointed by NotePad I thought I'd make a start at making my very-own TextEditor. There doesn't appear to be any kind of (NG) text editor for AmigaOS that I can think of that resembles anything like TextWrangler on the Mac. Aka a text-editor that allows you to edit and switch from a list of concurrently open documents - its my favourite way of working. The only one I have come across and use all the time is Codebench, but its only ideal as a software development tool - you have to create a Project first etc... rather than 'Session' based.
So I've spent the best part of the evening coming up with the below, atm the functionality is missing, its just built parts of the gui, reading what MUI is capable of (in terms of texteditor.mcc) and popping the menus into place, comparing it along side NotePad etc...
http://www.lakemarketingandevents.co.uk/jack/TextEdit_ScreenCapture0.png
This is all created with MUI and the latest version of Hollywood, an advert if you will, showing how easy it is to create something from nothing in the space of a few short hours.
I hope I will be in successful in turning this pet project in to a something meaningful than just a proof of concept. Last edited by djrikki on 26-Oct-2013 at 11:23 PM. Yes, it seems interesting if it could manage
-the add of text file by dragging -syntax highlighting (not vital but a bonus) -fast
Courage for this new project _________________ http://apps.amistore.net/zTools |

have you tried annotate or stormC ed? since purchasing the latter i've been using it daily. love it. and there are plans to expand its functionality quite a bit as well.
but, hey, there's no such thing as too many quality text editors. i'm just hoping the notepad utility included with the OS is one day modified to use richeditor.gadget rather than texteditor.gadget so we can have something like the brilliant editor found in codebench on every AOS4 install.

Thanks, I have StormCED but I have never thought to use it as a simple editor, i will try. And at least NoWinEd seems nice, second try.
Sorry DJrikki for the off-topic

Yeah, it's high time richeditor.gadget was released to the developer public so that we can finally start using something that supports colours and text styles. The texteditor.gadget is so limited, and apparently nobody's working on it to provide improvements

You could try CodePad if Rigo has released it yet, it's a simple editer with no syntax hilighting or tabs
@zzd10h
Have you tried CygnusEd? If your clever enough to not need syntax highlighting it's the best (and fastest) editer ever. You can create different configurations for every filetype you use, easily create gui buttons through arexx and any launcher type program. _________________ OS4 Rocks X1000 beta tester, Sam440 Flex (733)

| I'll release whatever its going to be called over the next few weeks along with the source code in a series of parts.
The first part will be development of the Gui before moving on to the functional part.
Anyone is welcome to have a look into the source code and re-use it for anything else once its uploaded. A mention in the credits will be more than enough.
I hope Hollywood users may find the source code of some use, others might wanna take a look at the XML file describing the simplicity of the Mui interface.
It would also be great if developers also replicated a few of the items in the menu structure, i.e. why shouldn't all applications have a link to OS4depot Bug Report? Why shouldn't all applications have a link to a PayPal Donation page somewhere?
BTW Trixie has a great article OS4Coding.net that is well worth reading about GUI considerations and the importance of consistency. Last edited by djrikki on 27-Oct-2013 at 02:40 PM. Last edited by djrikki on 27-Oct-2013 at 02:39 PM.

Thanks but I followed the Elyahu advice, StormCEd have all that I wanted,
Fast, tabs, drag n' drop, drag file support in AmiDock, syntax highlighting and as a bonus the colors are easily customizables, I made a pseudo 3270 ISPF Mainframe-editor theme like at work Last edited by zzd10h on 27-Oct-2013 at 05:00 PM.

I also use StormCEd, I'm one of the beta testers and have been using it for a long time but it is severely lacking in features compared to CygnusEd, eg. macros, search and replace ANY character tabs, newlines, carriage returns, nulls etc., file recovery from memory after a crash, auto saving, macro editer
The only things missing are unlimited line length and repeat macros until done (edge had that, pity it's not OS4 friendly). _________________ OS4 Rocks X1000 beta tester, Sam440 Flex (733)

| For me it's just an exercise in Mui and Hollywood programming.
Looking at NoWinED it uses Tabs instead of just listing open files in a list view. Still NoWinED is in fact much better than Notepad. Personally I don't see representing open files in tabs as very effective also it's a waste of screen real estate.
Not possible to do dynamic Mui structures in Hollywood at present anyway and this includes Tabs. MUI Royale 1.1 reportedly out soon so perhaps that will change. _________________

ah nice to share your code so that others who are interested can learn.
btw, I would check out Frexx text editor as it is simple to use and full featured and is freeware since for quite a while now._________________ ____________________________ c64-2sids, A1000, A1200T-060@50(finally working!),A4000-CSMKIII ! | I'm not familiar with TextWrangler or Mac editors in general, but IIRC, TextWrangler is the one written by Allan Odgaard, isn't it? Before he left the Amiga for the Mac world, he was the creator of the MUI TextEditor MCC and also played a role in the OS 3.x TextEditor gadget which is still part of our ReAction.
Although I don't know how much they have in common with TextWrangler, you might want to check whether you could base your own project on one of them.
Best regards,
Niels

I think you refer to TextMate, that's the one made by Allan which is a superb editor for Mac.
It's btw GPL'ed nowadays =) |
