sorry for bringing it up - just for info. "Issue" that created so many discussions is now solved

from website:

OS/4 OpenLinux Project terminated. Black Lab Linux Project born.
The OS/4 OpenLinux Project has been terminated, effective immediately. We have refreshed it and its now known as the Black Lab Linux Project. PC/OpenSystems LLC will not change as a company, and the OS/4 branding will continue to be used as a descriptor for prior releases but our new release, Black Lab Linux 4.1.8 is scheduled for release, and we will be transitioning the sites and all materials over to Black Lab Linux. This DOES NOT AFFECT support subscriptions. Customers and support contracts will continue to be supported and we will continue to pump out quarterly releases and bringing you guys great products and a great distribution.

Our inaugural release of Black Lab Linux 4.1.8 will be this Friday, Nov 22, 2013.

@OlafS25

Interesting. Still, a rose by any other name will still smell as sweet.

Edit: Also removed the duplicate topic with exact same wording as above.

If you goto their site seems there was some drama with this name change between Black Lab Linux & Distrowatch.

Different reasons this happens, if you care to peruse.

I dont follow Linux distros, so am out of the loop here, but why has this one received attention here?

From the little Ive seen it appears the only reason is due to some os4 zealots getting their knickers in a twist in regards to naming (which is ridiculous, theres been plenty of oses that have reacher v4 over the years whose names show this, none having "Amiga" in the title), which drew attention to our little niche userbase, ergo attracting some marketting attempts here.

Funny thing is, had these zealots not drawn attention in the 1st place, the subsequent things they then moaned about probably wouldnt have happened.

On the other hand blaming "patent trolls" for your own stupidity in trying to use patented logos, etc. is just as silly.

Patent trolls? Seriously?
Can't you see the pattern here?

- It's Os/4!! Like... you know, Os/2 but better.
- No wait, it's AMIGA Linux Os/4. Logo is a boing ball. Follow me, Amiga guys!
- I am a big guy, here's my promises, and please line up in IRC to ask me questions
- Here's an open letter from one of my VPs, see he says I am a big guy too
- I am a bigger guy, I call companies, I talk trademarks
- I got cease and desist letters!
- I got DEATH THREAT letters!
- Ok it's not AMIGA Linux anymore because you hate me
- Ok it's not even OS/4 anymore because of evil patent trolls!

This Donhert guy is desperate for attention AND a drama machine.
I bet my dinner even this last chapter is almost completely made up.
For the love of all that's dear, stop feeding him.

Yet another lie, if you ask me. Or, at the very least, a rather twisted and censored version of the truth - not that this would be a first for Mr. Dohnert.

Facing opposition from Amiga companies when trying to register "OS/4"? That's just ridiculous, "spending thousands of dollars on lawyers" my ass. But kudos to the wannabe trademark troll for complaining about patent trolls. That one made may day.

Good thing Distrowatch doesn't rank him anymore. Maybe that's going to teach him a thing or two about adult behaviour.

The reference in the Ashachat log from the q/a is clearly

Quote:
Amiga Open Linux

Do you know for fact which name was submitted to USPTO?

I'd like to wish Mr. Donhert and company good fortune as they work towards creating a name for themselves.
Hopefully they will find it more rewarding than trying to use someone elses name.

hmmm, about the new name -

The Wikipedia entry for Black Lab Linux currently describes a PPC MacIntosh oriented Linux distribution originated in 1999 by Terra Soft Solutions, the originator of Yellow Dog Linux.

Apparently, more recently distributed aimed at HPC clusters.

About.com - Linux

Curiouser and curiourser?

You're using "Dohnert said" as an argument? Seriously?

During Ashachat, he claimed he had filed for "Amiga Open Linux", now he makes it sound like he tried to register "OS/4". Given his track record, the truth is probably that he browsed the USPTO website once, or exchanged mails with somebody who's related to somebody else who registered a trademark once.

No. If there was an application, it must have been abandoned way before it got added to the public USPTO database.

@cgutjahr

Not for your benefit, since you already know this. But I think people might be confused about process unless they understand it's not as simple as a USPTO search.

Quote:
But a trademark doesn't have to be registered, it's yours as soon as you use it. Registration just makes it easier to defend your mark if somebody else wants to use the same or a similar mark.

from earlier discussion on trademarks in general
