Now that we have a common 'Operating Environment' for html5 etc within our differing NG Amigalike OSes, we have an opportunity to see some co-operative efforts between users.

Sadly there is not yet an AROS build (requires Zune update?), but once that is done the thread can be updated to include such results.

If you create or discover any useful html5 applications, scripts, contextual menus, per-url settings or other hints and tips, please share them here with your fellow Odyssey users.

(In case you were wondering, or feel offended by the blue butterfly, it's in the 'MorphOS - Applications' forum since there is no 'unified - applications' forum. Should the admins decide to create a unified applications forum, this thread can be easily moved. Hint, hint. )

A (vitally important) online web application suite:

MS Office web apps:

Welcome to a fully compliant and functional Microsoft Office implementation on your NG Amigalike of choice. :)

MS Word - fully functional viewer and editor
MS Excel - fully functional viewer and editor
(Haven't tried the others)

Both offer a broad subset of MS Office functions that should cover most people's daily needs.

Requires the following to be enabled:

> Local Storage
> Spoof as Internet Explorer 10 (Other spoofs may work, this one works best for me)

Instructions:
RMB>Windows>URL Settings..*
'Add' http://onedrive.live.com
Ensure 'enable local storage' checkbox is filled;
Spoof As: 'Internet Explorer 10' (dropdown/cycle gadget).

MorphOS - confirmed working
AmigaOS - confirmed working (with no spoofing)
AROS - (not yet applicable)

* NB - you might want to get familiar with the 'URL settings.' This very useful feature allows you to override the default preferences for individual domains.

A downloadable web app:

Glyphyr

A simple font editor.
Can also be downloaded for use as an offline web app (how cool!)

http://glyphrstudio.com/

Not sure if this has any use for us, but a nice toy and demonstration of offline web apps.

A couple of useful context menu items:

Play stream

Contextual menu item for playing f.ex video files shared across LAN using a web server such as Apache.

RMB>Settings>Preferences..>Contextual menus
'Add'
Category='Link' Label='Play stream' Action='a:mplayer/mplayer >NIL: %l -cachenetwork -gui -cache 16384 -quiet -fs -vo cgx_overlay::PLANAR -autosync 30'

(NB - needs configuring for AmigaOS vo drivers - could someone post a suitable alternative?)

(adjust path to mplayer to suit your config. assigning a: for applications is the most amigalike for me )

Translate page

Contextual menu item for one-click translation of foreign language webpages using Google translate.

RMB>Settings>Preferences..>Contextual menus
'Add'
Category='Page' Label='Translate Page' Action='OPENURL "http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=%u" NOLAUNCH'

(Currently configured to translate into English. )

An example of a useful MIME type:

ANR Shoutcast

Connects to shoutcast radio stations using AmiNetRadio by clicking on the link.

Also demostrates 'breaking out' from OWB MIME types to more complex scripts.

In OWB:

RMB>Settings>Preferences..>Mime Types
Edit (or add if it isn't already there):
- MIME Type: audio/shoutcast
- Extension: pls (not .pls, just pls)
- Action: External viewer
- Viewer: s:owb/anropen %f
Save

From desktop*:

Open a text editor and save the following as s:owb/anropen:
Quote:
.key local
.bra {
.ket }

; set your ANR path here:
set ANRpath "A:aminetradio/aminetradio"

; leave everything below here alone!
rename >NIL: {local} {local}.pls
run >NIL: $ANRpath URL {local}.pls

Set the script flag (open a shell and type 'protect s:owb/anropen +s')

* Agnostic, and easier than typing Ambient/Workbench/Wanderer/DOpus/Scalos.

@Boot_WB

Good idea !

WebReplay : simple rxMUI script to stream/download video links to MPlayer

Not tested under MorphOS but it should work.

http://os4depot.net/index.php?function=showfile&file=video/play/webreplay.lha

Requirement : Odyssey - RxMUI - MPlayer - rtmpdump - wget

Couple picks from my MorphOS tips, I guess they work on OS4 too :)

How to Reduce OWB's HD Writes

OWB writes a lot of data to hard drive by default. You might want to reduce it if you're paranoid about SFS fragmentation, filesystem corruption or privacy. Or just want your .recycled dir to have other than OWB files too. One option is to use Private Browsing mode always, but here are tips if you don't want to activate that always or you want to restrict certain writes only.

- Disable TopSites feature. This makes a write for every page you visit, it's an awful amount. You can disable it with "Setenv SAVE OWB_DISABLE_TOPSITES 1" in shell.
- Disable Website Icons feature. Open Interface settings and uncheck all Website Icons checkmarks.
- Disable all saving options from Privacy settings.

If you still need some option enabled, because some site requires it, you can soft link its configuration file to Ram Disk. For example I still have Local Storage enabled, but I have linked its dir to ENV: (which resides in Ram Disk). To do that, make LocalStorage directory to both ENV: and ENVARC: (that ensures that it's created after reboot too), open shell and cd into your OWB/Conf/ dir, rename or delete the old LocalStorage dir, type "makelink LocalStorage ENV:LocalStorage". Using ENV: gives the advantage to have some files saved so that those settings are restored in every boot. If you're happy with certain settings, copy it to ENVARC: and it will be preserved without being messed up with later usage. If you just want to have configuration files enabled, but cleared on every boot, you could soft link them to T: for example.

Alternative YouTube Script for OWB

YouTube Center is a feature rich configureable userscript for improving YouTube experience. It's made for mainstream browsers, but it also works on OWB! All videos can be forced to HTML5 to get them work in OWB. It's heavier than Fab's official OWB script, but works fine as an option or as a backup plan :). Script saves its settings to LocalStorage to #?www.youtube.com#? files.

Contextual menu for downloading all files from directory

If you browse to file directory, you can download all files from it with this contextual menu entry:

Category: Page
Label: Download files
Action: wget -r --no-parent --reject "index.html*" -e robots=off -nH --cut-dirs=1 -P "RAM:" %u

wget must be in path and all files are downloaded to RAM: (you can change it to anything you want too).

For finnish users, if you want to see videos in Iltalehti's TV section, put in URL Preferences http://www.iltalehti.fi/iltv* and select Spoof As: IPad.

Office Web Apps work fine here in Odyssey 1.23 without spoofing on AmigaOS 4.1 Update 6.

Thanks for that

Just tested on MorphOS 3.5, Odyssey 1.23.

Worked fine with Cracked.com.

Didn't seem to work on CNN (As per the readme, trying to open links with camera icon, and images with 'play' icon). Error messages 'unsupported scheme', 'no video found' .

Nice GUI - Haven't seen MUIRexx in action before, cool!

One minor bit of feedback:

Once the GUI has opened, paths to wget, rtmpdump etc can be configured (Thanks, I will use that, see below).
However, unless wget is in c: on the first run, the script fails (can't find c:wget) and the paths can't be configured.
(This came up purely because I normally keep wget and other Unix-format command line tools in gg:bin (or gg:usr/bin) and add those directories to path, reserving c: for AmigaDOS format tools. )

@Boot_WB

Thx to have test under MOS.

"paths can't be configured" ?
Even if you click on the little ASL icon at the right of the text box "C:wget" ?

After you have to hit "save settings" and restart the script.

To configure, try to look at all the pictures in the archive.

I will recheck for CNN, it worked 2 weeks ago... but are others websites works ? Euronews for example ?

Unless you have wget in c:, the gui doesn't open, so you never get to see the ASL requester.

I'll check through some more when I get time later: babysitting this eve.

@Boot_WB

Ah yes, you are right, I renamed my c:wget and it fails too.

It's because, I fetch the url webpage with wget BEFORE to display the rxMUI interface...

edit : I will embed wget OS4 & MOS version...
edit edit : no, I will just remove the "c:"

Nevertheless, CNN works well here, I just tested.

@jPV

Thanks for the tips, have disabled all favicons here and topsites. Liked topsites but can live without if if claws back some CPU cycles. Odyssey is pretty fast on A1-500, but anything that can help things along is welcome especially when it comes to javascript-heavy pages.

Anyone have anymore tips for speed, less memory use, etc?

Is it possible to supress the pop-up downloads window completely? Can't find an option for this in prefs.

Thanks!

There is indeed an AROS version of Odyssey. Granted its v1.16, but there's little that doesnt work vs. 1.23. Coupled with the fact AROS Odyssey has jit for javascript, arguements could be made to say its the most usable version (depending on a persons uses).
