Why ? AmigaOS 4 (and MorphOS) do not need fast SSD since once the system is loaded (really fast even with a hard drive), there aren't any more transfers. Still thinking like in the PC/Mac world, don't you ?
As for the X1000 advice : don't you think that if he could affoard one, he would have had already one ?_________________ PowerMac G5 2,7Ghz - 2GB - Radeon 9650 - MorphOS 3.14 AmigaONE X1000, 2GB, Sapphire Radeon HD 7700 FPGA Replay + DB 68060 at 85Mhz |

An SSD makes a big difference on an Amiga. It's part of why my lowly Sam440ep at 600MHz still feels so snappy, even compared to my A1XE 800MHz without. |

I think you must have had a really slow hard drive with you Sam440 (I have one too actually). A 7200rpm is enough to get about the same speed. An SSHD could also be a good choice (and maybe I'll get one for my Sam440). _________________ PowerMac G5 2,7Ghz - 2GB - Radeon 9650 - MorphOS 3.14 AmigaONE X1000, 2GB, Sapphire Radeon HD 7700 FPGA Replay + DB 68060 at 85Mhz |

Ten minutes to fully boot yes. I don't consider a log in screen to be a useable desktop. |

Yeah but MorphOS would be worth more than the machine. And AFAIK MOS doesn't have a full featured DAW. Nor is there a FireFox port AFAIK.
ALso, I could probably find an old PC laptop, install UAE and buy OS4.1FE to emulate on it for less than what MorphOS costs. Apart from matching speed. Last edited by Hypex on 28-Mar-2015 at 03:50 PM.

My SAM is the one with the SSD - that's why it's snappy compared to the faster but non-SSD A1. |

It's probably more fun to install MorphOS natively on an old PPC iBook/Powerbook Mac though IMHO._________________ "Art challenges technology. Technology inspires the art." John Lasseter, Co-Founder of Pixar Animation Studios |

"So then I boot up Windows. Gee that booted fast. Login? That screen is so annoying! Oh damn it, it's still loading! Five minutes. HD still going. Ten minutes."
I have to ask, what sort of system are you using there?
I have an old netbook I use on occasion, about 5 years old, running Win 7 ... Atom processor, slow as molasses (in the PC world, anyway) and it takes less than a minute to boot.
I haven't run across a Windows system that took forever to load since the PIII days, and even then, only because the person's system was overloaded with malware + viruses (and I suspect it also had a faulty HD).
Or did I misunderstand your original post, and you are running Windows in a slow VM or something? |

Sounds like your Windows install is bloated or you have lots of malware/stuff in startup.
I'd reinstall and get an SSD, it will make the world of difference. My Windows 8.1 PC with SSD boots from cold in around 20 seconds (and yes, faster than my OS4 machine did).
Even with a hard disk it was under 2 mins. |

Even so, I have an old P4 with XP, it only takes around 2 mins to boot from cold max with an old 80GB hard disk. |

Agreed.
Only time I ever ran across a system taking anywhere close to 10 min was on an eMachines PIII (may have even been Celeron from that era), overloaded with malware and it had a failing HD. I've had relatives who said their PCs also took forever, but again, they were from that same era, and had tons of malware.
Clean up any malware, make your startup trim and lean, and no modern (or any PC from the past 5 or so years) should take more than 2 minutes, even on sluggo harddrives. Last edited by Nameless on 28-Mar-2015 at 07:17 PM. Last edited by Nameless on 28-Mar-2015 at 07:17 PM.

There's no Firefox, but Odyssey which is IMHO a very good alternative. I have no issues with Odyssey. And a native OS (MorphOS) is quite different than an Emulator (UAE). Speedwise even a current i7 with UAE/OS4 will not reach the Powerbook MorphOS speed. Yes, the OS costs, but there's the fully working free demo. Download it, test it as much as you like and decide for yourself if you think it's worth the money to you or not. The demo makes it a very fair deal. Compared to any real OS4 hardware it's a bargain anyway. Plus, you are on the safe side legally: OS4 on emulation is not officially supported by Hyperion and you also need a non authorized ROM file. MorphOS on the Powerbook has the full support by the MorphOS team._________________ My programs: via.bckrs.de MorphOS user since V0.4 (2001) |

Of course. And AROS is getting better and better. But yet it's not as mature as MorphOS is. The good thing of our (probably too) splitted community is that there's at least choice._________________ My programs: via.bckrs.de MorphOS user since V0.4 (2001) |
