As outlined before here and there, I decided to have a break from OS4 active development scene.
Here the web links to my projects so far:

Projects for AmigaOS 4.x
Projects for AmigaOS 3.x

I now want to go back to my 1st love, the Commodore Amiga 500 in the modern form of Minimig. I need a Workbench setup to be able to continue development of unfinished projects (mix of C and M68K Assembly).

I would like to hear your experience in this sense, also dealers are welcome to let me know about availability for purchasing, thanks.

@Massi

I own 2 and am very happy with both of them Minimigs

A basic 2MB model with the original PIC controller that I use for playing ADF games and keep connected to an old CRT TV.

Plus a 4MB model with the ARM addon board that I have have connected to the same TFT monitor I use for my sam440ep.

All and all they are both really good machines fro playing A500 games on and running software that you would run on an expanded A500 with 2MB's of chip and 1.5MB's of fast memory and a small harddisk in the case of my expanded one. But you cant really replace an expanded A1200 setup with one due to the lack of RAM and 68K cpu as you cant run software that needs and 020 or higher CPU or AGA.

On the other hand compatibility to hardware hitting demos and games is really good and I can run some games that I cant run on my real A500 or A1200 on them without using WHDLoad, whats to being able to change between OCS, ECS, kickstart version and RAM config from an onscreen menu at run time.

@Dwyloc

Thanks, I have some questions.

1) Which is the difference between the 2 models (PIC / ARM based)?
2) How about the harddisk? Is it a "virtual" harddisk or?

My target is OCS / ECS.

@Massi

I wonder if I can attach a PowerPC on it.

I always wonder if the MiniMig has the same sound quality as a real A500.

How is the sound quality?

@Massi

Or you can go for a MiSt. It has a MiniMig core but, unlike the original MiniMig :

-it supports AGA
-it have a power button (a real lack in the MiniMig)
-it supports many other cool cores (Apple2, CBS, NES, MasterSystem, Amstrad CPC,...)

And overall,
-it's currently available (I bought mine from french Amedia reseller)

I have both, MiniMig and MiSt.

Harddisk are hdf files stored on a SDCard.

On "Classic", I'm sure that you will miss your OS4 system... i hope...

@Massi

I've got a few FPGA variation.

My C-One with Minimig module is currently RIP.

My original Minimig v1 board was upgraded by AmigaKit with the extra RAM and I added the ARM expansion board.

My Chameleon64 has the Minimig core installed (needs to be updated)

Finally my FPGA Arcade is waiting on the expansion board and also needs updating.

The 3 working boards all run ClassicWB variations. My Minimig v1 is inside an old PC keyboard. I bought one of The Daddy's X500 cases for the FPGA Arcade and the Chameleon64 in fitted to a C64C.

I love them all, but for ECS fans the Minimig v1 with the extra RAM and ARM with turbo mode engaged makes one hell of an Amiga 500 replacement.

@All

1)
Does anyone know the difference between the Minimig based on PIC / ARM controller?

2)
Does Cloanto Amiga Forever exist for the Minimig?

Does this answer your question?

Amiga Forever contains several versions of Workbench, of course there are the untouched 1.0-3.1 ones from Commodore, then there is Cloantos own Workbench 3.X which is the latest and most modern one. There are also AROS 68k and a few other packages. While the obvious area of use for the Amiga Forever package is emulation through UAE I suppose there is nothing preventing you from installing the OS on a real Amiga.

Cloanto (who is the sole owner of the Operating System for Amiga since some time) did recently release an updated version of Workbench 3.1 for Amiga computers that has several improvements compared to the old Commodore one. It comes in many shapes and forms, both physical media (including floppy disks, CompactFlash cards, and ROMs), and as a complete set of downloadable HDD images. The improvements in the new 3.1 disks includes a FFS version with support for larger HDD's, updated installer included, and support for 3.X roms (meaning theh 3.X ROM is supported but unfortunately not included). So with the 3.X ROM and Workbench 3.X from the Amiga Forever package it should be perfectly possible to install it on any Amiga computer!

@NovaCoder

Don't have one, so I can't comment. I think I've reached my computer saturation peak and I don't have room for any more machines.

@TRIPOS

One thing not mentioned in that Wiki-link is that without the ARM you can only make practical use of small HDF files. The larger you make them then the slower they work with the PIC. Using my ARM, I have 2GB HDF files (I could make them larger) and they fly.

I'm using 4GB SD cards on all of my FPGA machines. This allows a 2GB HDF file with ClassicWB and WHDLoad for running multiple games, plus plenty of space left over for core files, Kickstarts and lots of ADF images.

That may work actually (even if Amiga Forever makes use of specific UAE drivers for graphics and AHI audio, it also includes other drivers ...).

Good ideas the whole post, thanks.

@All

If I inderstand well the PIC / ARM controllers allow the same functions, but ARM is faster (using ADFs and virtual hard disks), correct me if I am wrong.

I like that Crystal transparent case a lot ... :)

Dealers do you have the complete system in stock?

It feels like my unfinished projects for Classic Amiga will remain so.

No reply from dealers
