@cdimauro

Like looks cool im guessing x5000 runs cool with a tiny fan like that. PPC = less heat X86 = Oven

lol

@amigang

It's the official case or a fan made case?

So is the official case for the X5000 or just a really pro home job.

The case is NZXT Phanton 530. There's a white edition too, be nice to see the reversed colour scheme.

@kyle

You're probably right but it would be pretty cool if it was the official one. Itt would be nice if the X5000 is given it's own identity rather than re-use the X1000 case and NZXT case is really striking with the AmigaONE and boing ball logos.

Damn, that's one mighty hideous looking machine. Big, bulky, horrible colors.
Looks like a pc case from a decade ago.

That's one thing I like about current pcs. The form factors are nice and cases can be tiny. "Amiga" systems cant do that I guess due to being stuck with ppc, and all heat, etc. they let off.

PCs these days are infinitely more more economical and give off much less heat (as well as being orders of magnitude more powerful).

Are amiga owners/users permanently stuck with such big, bulky machines? I hope not, but I cant see it changing with the hardware options we're given.
More power consumption, more heat, less optimising of hardware use (ie. no use of power saving tech that exists in the hardware we use), etc., etc., etc.

There's always minimig and AROS (rather the potential of small, powerful, cool running systems it offers) I guess, which are more to my liking as far as system size, heat, etc. are concerned

p.s. Just looked again,...... Good God that's hideous,.... and check out the size,..... its freaking huge Damn!

@amigang

Nice paintjob on that case!

I put my X5000 in a Cooler Master Elite 361 as that's the smallest I could find which could still fit a full size ATX board while being much smaller as the PSU is located next to the DVD drive.

It has nothing to do with the PPC CPU. It has everything to do with the motherboard manufacturer.

>PCs these days are infinitely more more economical and give off much less heat (as well as being orders of magnitude more powerful).

My Amiga desktop (SAM440) consumes 25W, my x86 desktop(s) consumes 60...110W depending on load. SAM440 is mini-ITX size while PC boards are micro-ATX or flex-ATX.
My PPC laptop is smaller than my x86 laptop, yet more capable (because MorphOS).
My smallest PPC computer motherboard is smaller than mini-ITX motherboard and runs at same Ghz as the low end PC in local shop.

Intel Atom series are as low power capable as PowerPC chips, but they also are similar level in performance, far behind intel desktop CPUs.

@amigang

very nice clean case mod but needs another boing ball

@ fishy

to each his own I suppose but I personally can't stand small cases! too tight and not enough space for adding extra HD's, cards. etc etc etc.

My Amiga desktop (SAM440) consumes 25W, my x86 desktop(s) consumes 60...110W depending on load.

There are several models of desktop CPUs, but they usually consume a few watts when they are idle or with little load.

Ghz is not a measure of the processing "power" of processor.

Nevertheless, they offer very good performance nowadays. Remember that the last Atom family (starting from BayTrail) is not anymore based on an in-order design, but on an out-of-order (and 2-way, as usually). OoO 2-way is what the last PowerPCs used.

Even under load Haswell and Haswell Refresh are very economical up unto about 2ghz. It scales disproportionally from then on, but haswell at 2ghz is still more powerful than any ppc processor, and by a fair whack.

Anyway, it's not about ppc vs. x86 or whatever for me. It's about reality vs. myths.

@klx300r

Small and compact doesn't mean no room for expansion. My micro atx i7 system has an ssd + 2 satam drives, a tv tuner card plus a full sized version of a high end (at the time) gfx card. Plus USB and firewire and I don't really need anything more. Some small cases have pretty clever designs allowing quite a bit to be packed into a small space.

Actually, one thing that hasn't been touched on it the reference to "Xena".
They haven't wasted time/effort/money on another Xorro interface for the x5000 have they?

@cdimauro

>There are several models of desktop CPUs, but they usually consume a few watts when they are idle or with little load.

Yes. But the discussion was about PCs that are more than the CPU.
I measured my HW consumption with a cheap AC meter and pointed out that a PPC is not bad in power consumption, when building a desktop computer.

>Ghz is not a measure of the processing "power" of processor

Yes. But I read people want x86 because of the Ghz.

>...Remember that the last Atom family (starting from BayTrail)...

SAM440 (25W) is too slow for wordpress editing (unusable), but yesterday I noticed that so is 1,33Ghz BayTrail (2,5...5W?) (usable but very slow). AMD 64x2 @2Ghz system (90W) seems ok. And FX4300 system (60-110W) seems good for it. Not yet tried it with MorphMiniG4 (~25W?).

Update: for example T1042 is said to consume 3...10W, depending on load. Mobile chips (like BayTrail and ARM) can be more efficient.
((btw, for fishy, IIRC, T1042 size is 23mmx23mm, so it does not make motherboard large))

btw. interesting how anandtech get their results...., some examples
AMD E-350 idle 24W load 32W
intel i3-2100 idle 81W load 122W
(+most CPU results do not seem to have power consumption listed)

Anyone with a link to x86 power consumption tests with results?

UPDATE: some intel results

No, only AEon's and Eytech's (except for the Micro) have bigger form factors, while ACube's motherboards are all smaller.
For example i'm really fine with my mini-itx SAM and i hope it will last as long as possible because i also can't stand big bulky cases in my home...

@Nibunnoichi

Yep.
The reason for ACube to do "large" mini-ITX board is that their industrial market wants all sort of weird interfaces on board.
The reason for A-Eon to do "large" ATX board is that they want to do "high end" boards that can house more expansion cards than a small PC motherboard.

(Varisys made them think xcore is cool, but it does not take extra space after ~3 PCIe slot motherboard design)

++
One must also notice: when doing smaller than mini-ITX, it starts to get harder to find generic cases for the motherboard, so specific/custom case need to be made and price added to product.
