The 2016 AmiWest Classic Clinic happens in just two weeks. On Friday, October 7, we get together to work on our classic hardware and software, starting at 5 PM. If you need help with a hardware upgrade, a software install, or trouble-shooting your classic machine, bring your parts to the Classic Clinic.

We will have volunteer experts on hand to assist. We will also have free food (as long as it lasts), so don't worry about dinner. The Classic Clinic has proven to be one of our most popular events.

Everyone who shows up gets help. We'll take your situation as far as we can, then recommend next steps. Most of the projects can be completed on-site.

So be sure to make plans to attend AmiWest 2016, starting with the Classic Clinic. It's also a great time to meet and greet AmiVerse friends old and new.

AmiWest 2016 and associated events will be October 6-9, 2016 at the Holiday Inn Express, 2224 Auburn Blvd., Sacramento, CA. Make your plans to attend now. If you've attended before, bring one other person who is new to the show. If this will be your first time, welcome to the show! See our website at amiwest.net for the latest information and watch this blog for breaking news about the show. See you in October!

@amiwest

It would be cool to know what NXP will do with PowerPC in the future.

It seems PowerPC Next Generation is back on their roadmap. (+more under NDA) (wtf? it was supposed to be dead, right)

Perhaps NXP could send someone to reveal some detail(s). (yeah, why would they, but anyway)

NXP roadmap with PowerPC next generation:

+not followed up PowerPC closely during last year or so, point me if I've missed something crusial info from "affordable" side of PowerPC. Thanks.

I can help with booting and installing the new ubuntu MATE 16.04.1 live DVD on your X1000 at the AmiWest. I will bring a DVD to the show.

Further information about the DVD: forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz

I'm not sure which "Linux Day 2015" that slide came from, but supposedly it's from the year 2015.

Seems that Power9 will be a licenseable core, in a similar way like arm. If true we can expect many company creating custom power pc cores based on the new ISA.

In 11 days we will know if Hyperion is dead or not?

@sinisrus

Hyperion was dead (insolvent) for few months in 2015. Being dead doesn´t mean too much for Amiga companies (look at several incarnations of Amiga.Inc...).

What we want to know: will Hyperion deliver OS4.2 before we are all dead?

If there's anyone the CSPPC of BPPC and a Mediator it would be entertaining to see if a Radeon SI would actually work in such a setup and if it actually made any worthwhile difference. The Same goes for the A1XE but if the Radeon SI works in an A1 then the difference would be worthwhile. Hopefully there's enough different OS4 systems there for these tests to be done. Just needs a PEX 8112 PCI to PCIe adapter and, if nobody has a low profile version, a flexi PCIe extender.

@Rob
In several years of helping at the Classic Clinic...
no meditor type systems have been brought in,
only one A1-G4 (mine) we got it working!

I would like to test this myself, but have no idea of the adapter needed.

where can you find one?

@SACC-dude

First thing to mention is that you can't use the RadeonHD cards in the 66Mhz slot, only in one of the 33Mhz slots. That does however mean you can use it with your existing AGP card giving you dual display capability.

From Hans' recommendation page:

If you use a PCI-to-PCIe bridge card, get one with a PEX8112. The Radeon HD driver has code to optimise the settings of the PEX 8111 and 8112, but not other PCI-to-PCIe bridges. Plus, it supports blind-prefetching, which increases VRAM read access speed. Also, you will need a low-profile graphics card, or your card will be dangling over the edge, with connectors blocked by your case

I've found such a card for sale in the US on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/SEDNA-PCI-PCIE-Adapter-Card/dp/B00EV44782

This Radeon R7 250e card seems to be popular with Sam460 users and it has an alternative low profile bracket meaning you can fit it inside the case when used with the above bridge card.

https://www.amazon.com/Club3D-Profile-PCI-Express-Graphics-CGAX-R7252L/dp/B00NMXVU3S

I was hoping that someone at the show might be able to bring such a card from the own system for testing. I'd not keen on recommending someone to spend a relatively large amount of money for hardware that might not working so if people can bring the necessary hardware then there is no risk.
With AmigaKit/A-EON on hand, I'm sure they'd let you install and test the RadeonHD driver, the Warp3D SI driver and Warp3D Nova without paying if it doesn't work.

If nobody can bring a low profile video card then you can use one of these to allow you to locate the video card outside the case.

Like this:

https://www.amazon.com/PCI-E-Express-Extender-Flexible-Extension/dp/B008BZBFTG/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1474936009&sr=1-7&keywords=pcie+to+pcie+X16

If your A1 had the DMA fix then you need to be aware of this from Hans' page.

AmigaOne-XE (With DMA Fix) and the Micro AmigaOne

It is well known that the Micro AmigaOne (uA1) has trouble with using a plug-in graphics card. Some have managed to use plug-in graphics cards, but had to sacrifice DMA for their hard-drives, and USB. AmigaOne-XE (A1-XE) boards with the DMA fix have the same problem as the uA1 with graphics cards plugged into the 33 MHz bus. Unfortunately UBoot does not initialise Radeon HD cards properly when plugged into the 66 MHz PCI slot since it cannot handle nested PCI bridges. I hope that the AmigaOne UBoot update project manages to fix this issue. In the meantime, know that using Radeon HD cards (or Radeon X1000 series cards) will require sacrificing DMA for IDE and USB.

Exactly, new third party Power8 and 9 based cpus, licensed and available.
An alternative ISA, like ARM.

I'd LIKE an alternative to Intel, it will keep them on their toes, and assure better products from all.

@All
Please tell me if you bring your X1000 to the AmiWest for testing or installing Linux. I can help with booting and installing Linux on your X1000.

I am staying there from the 2nd of October till the end of the AmiWest show. In this time I can help.

@SACC-dude
Is there Wifi in the hotel?

"If you use a PCI-to-PCIe bridge card,"

Could this be valid for the sam440 ep?

I have a spare 6570 radeon card...
