@BoingBear

Network and wireless network cards are cheap, and virtually all X1000 owners have one or the other.
Is it really important?

@BoingBear

I clearly recall a post indicating Hyperion owes you that (X1000 ethernet driver).

If that has since changed to an A-Eon responsibility, I would not know...

Hyperion also owes everyone that bought an X1000 a copy of OS4.2.
Think you'll have that any time soon either?

And I DO agree that the hardware vendor, not the OS vendor owes you drivers for the hardware you bought from them.

@iggy

That might be an area for speculation, due to the fact that "X1000 was not my idea" from the h/w vendor, which might lead one to believe that any analysis of what could be done/delivered was done by the OS vendor, no?

I can give you one direct quote since the question was asked rather directly:

Quote:
Between hardware makers and OS developers (A-EON/Hyperion), who's responsible for hardware drivers?

Quote:
With the A1-X1000 originally it was Hyperion. However, the hardware manufacturers are now taking on this responsibility.

Source July 21, 2013

Again, any change is something either Trevor or Tim would have to speak to.

No, because the X1000 was very much Aeon idea, and they paid Varisys to design it to their specifications.
The OS is missing a network driver, and it should have been included in the port, but as it wasn't, its still Aeon's problem.
Its their hardware.

It might make more sense to avoid company names and deal with personal names instead.

The selectors of the board were:

A-Eon V1 (Belgium) was Ben Hermans, Anthony Moorley, and Trevor Dickinson.
Consulting was with key AmigaOS developers.

Obviously things changed since A-Eon V2 without Ben Hermans and Anthony Moorley was formed in the U.K.

That is a good point about the original Aeon, it isn't the same organization today.
In a way, that makes the X1000 an orphan, even if they claim it as part of the family today.

I can connect to the net with my X1000 and I'm not in a desperate need for another free PCI slot so from my perspective it's better that resources that could have been spent on the onboard NIC driver were spent eleswhere.

Fundraise is really slow. We need some big names with money who should decide donate.

I tried messaging PowerOrg Consortium on Twitter only to discover with horror that the profile is not updated since 2013!

I tried also some other PPC based like pages like IBM PPC Linux but I am not a famous person and I hit only 120 views and a single like.

I signalled fundraising to OSNews but I got ignored by Holwerda.

Do you know sites in which to spread these news?

Do you know any big name who could contribute fundraising with donations?

Don't you think, that the bounty is a bit too unclear.

I mean, I do not really know, what the money is really for.

I think a Kickstarter Project would have made a better impact.

As defined right now, I think a company should pay the engineer.

That's just my opinion

We are getting there, and it hasn't been that long.
So small donations from many people seem to be working.

Since the design work will commence at 4000 euros (ONLY 100 EUROS LEFT UNTIL THAT OCCURS GUYS!) , this gradual pace is fine.

Well, the goals seem pretty straight forward.
Produce an open design anyone can implement, with initial prototypes that can be fully tested.

As no one was implementing a similar idea, and a Kickstarter campaign would not have been graduated (and faced a higher likely hood of not getting anywhere), this is the approach chosen.

It does look like at least the initial schematics will be created.

I made a small donation. By comparison. Hope it progresses and then I will micro finance with other like minded people at the next point in development.

I am disappointed that PPC Safari is unable to post on the site. I just realised I wasted two posts that ended up in a black hole. Used latest Webkit but hope PPC Linux works better or PPC really is the way of the Dodo.

Raffaele,

PowerOrg doesn't exitst anymore.

Try openpower consortium, although they are really focused on Power8 and Power9 for server and big data analytics.
Btw could worth a try

@Hypex

Safari for PPC? The last version I know of is 5.0.6, which is quite dated.
If you are using OSX, then TenFourFox is much more current.

And yes, Linux works better than OSX, as it is more up to date.

One of the interests of some of the people working on the PPC laptop project is the continuing support of big endian Linux distros for PowerPC.

AND A QUICK NOTE:

The project has accumulated 31.75% of its initial goal of 12,600, which equals 4,000.

SO...initial work on the schematics by Acube should commence soon!

Thanks to the 60 people that have contributed so far.

If donations continue at their current rate, full payment for this first part of the project will be secured.

Video can be an issue outside of html5.
But Safari has not been updated in years and has all the security flaws inherent in something based on WebKit from that period.

And I can't run anything much better than my ATI X1900GT under OSX, whereas I have access to better video cards under Linux (and soon under MorphOS).

I just don't have a lot of use for OSX. Its a bit of a pig when it comes to resources, not that Linux is that much better, but its a bit more responsive.

What I'd really like, and I am not likely to ever get, is an SMP enabled MorphOS running on a Quad core PCIe G5.
That would have a nice performance edge over OSX as it would be much more efficient.
