| Hello World,
please forgive me for posting this in the wrong forum (if so), but I couldn't find a better place for my question on my own. Is there a true JRE stack available for AmiKit (inluding Java GUI support) and does a Thunderbird like mail program exist, for the platform (not Java, but Amiga)?
Once more, sorry if this is the wrong spot to ask. |

thx for the hint, but it lacks the GUI portion I need. What about a Thunderbird like mail app? |

What do you mean Thunderbird like? What features do you need?
YAM is a very good mailer, but misses IMAP and HTML. SimpleMail features IMAP and HTML, but not so matured as YAM.
Oh, and both of them handle mails as separate files in a drawer you like. I had lots of problems with Thunderbird and other mainstream mail clients because of the filesystem embedded in filesystem idea as how they packs a full mail folder in one file. Last edited by Lazi on 29-Jun-2017 at 05:16 PM.

Thunderbird is the standard Mail app under Linux and also popular on Windoze for those with an Outlook allergy. It allows for seamless connections to POP and IMAP accounts, but for now I would be happy with full POP and HTML support.

| @Paula,
In fact I use Thunderbird and Libre Office on my Win7 system that has no Office. I wonder if there is a version for PPC that can be ported?

Well, you've now got references to the two major Amiga e-mail clients, so why not try them and see if they're like you want, or do they miss some functionality you expect as a Thunderbird user. Basic features are similar in all these kinds of traditional standalone email clients afterall.

The problem here is portabillity. I can't use AmiKit at work, but I'd like to keep my e-mail clients as much in sync as possible. Thus I'd prefer a cross platform workable solution.

Gmail this is what I use (on AmigaOS4.1 and Windows10 @ Home), but at work normally work, so don't need to check my private mail, but I can check that on my mobile phone, so not a issue. |

What platform are you on? You said AmiKit but you are not running it on a PC? Otherwise you could just use it on the host OS.
If you are happy with POP and HTML support SimpleMail should be be fine. Though I find it hard to get basic features on it. They don't provide a basic feature list. It should do POP as that's a basic feaure. If it does infact support HTML you are onto a winner. And if it can do IMAP then it's up there with the rest and has reached YAM killer status.
YAM lacks HTML. Then again my ISB web mail can't understand HTML unless you click on the HTML attachment. LOL. |

I am runnning AmiKit on Android and Android mail apps lack only practical means of storing mail content locally (on the device itself). |

| There are no modern Internet clients for Amiga in general. _________________ B5D6A1D019D5D45BCC56F4782AC220D8B3E2A6CC |

I wasn't aware of Android AmiKit. That's interesting. Can't see any mention on the website or what programs are included. Why is info so bare these days?
I suppose storing it on an Android would be a bad idea unless you wiped off old ones as you go. Or you had an external HD connected over the network where they could be stored.
But if not using YAM which is setup for POP or SimpleMail you could try these: http://alternativeto.net/software/mozilla-thunderbird/?platform=android
I don't know why Android lacks Thunderbird since you can get FireFox. Or if Firefox has it built in or similar.
Even so I can't imagine using an Android device for email as they tend to lack a keyboard and mouse. |

Thunderbird is a lot more mail centric than Firefox is, and the FF folks need any user base they can hold onto these days - which makes them open minded to porting requests.
And its a common miscperception that Android has no mouse or keyboard support. Ever since Lollipop, you can just attach a bluetooth mouse & keyboard and start working it like on a PC. It even has support for multiple mousebuttons built in.
All the Android mail clients listed on your link have the drawback, that they keep the mail on the server by default. That has the big disadvantage, that I need both a stable Internet connection to review (older out of cache) mails and that I have to trust the service provider exclusivly, to keep my mail(s) safe and available to me.Last edited by Paula on 09-Jul-2017 at 01:34 PM.

Well I don't mean no support. Just using it by itself on the touch screen. I hate unreal keyboards that take half your screen and have no feel.
OTOH. I don't know how I'd be with wireless input devices. For a portable device I like a keyboard connected or integrated like laptop.

Why I listed those, apart from coming across them in some research, is that ones like K-9 had POP support. Unless the meaning of POP has changed (and it doesn't like it used too) a POP client should be able to store the mail to a locally mounted drive. Then again that tends to require root. And since Android is not a normal version of Linux you have to be a tech and reflash the firmware instead of entering a root password. Seems they completely misunderstood what root is in Linux and purposedly made it very hard to do.
Anyway have you got your AmiKit setup now? And have you tested any emails clients within for possible usability?Last edited by Hypex on 09-Jul-2017 at 05:33 PM.

For POP3 (download mails to local filesystem) both YAM and SimpleMail are working solutions. I use SimpleMail myself for GMail, O365, etc with POP3.
IMAP (mails on server) is more troublesome on Amiga, although there is some support, it seems that people have some problems with it._________________ - The wiki based MorphOS Library - Your starting point for MorphOS - Software made by jPV^RNO |

Some support where? Ancient pine compilations? :D

At least SimpleMail has had IMAP support as long as I've been using it... I even used it with IMAP for a while years ago, but I'm such oldskool user that I felt more comfortable with POP3 afterall. Can't remember if I encountered any actual problems..._________________ - The wiki based MorphOS Library - Your starting point for MorphOS - Software made by jPV^RNO |
