CDRW Writing in OS4

Hi all,

(last thread for this morning honest!!)

I noticed the cdrw prog in the System dir, and guess this is for the Mount Rainer support in OS4.

I seem to remember that packet writing was also to be supported for those cdrw/dvdrw that do not support the Mount Ranier format.

Is it included in the pre-release version?

Cheers

Rassilon

@Rassilon

You should find both CDRW and CDMRW mountlists on the CD. The former is normal packet writing, the latter is mount rainier.

Simply mount the one you want, format it with the "FormatCDRW" tool, and copy files over.

@xeron

Thanks

I was having a stupid moment and forgeting that I had to actually mount the drivers!!!

(This is what happens when you don't buy much new amiga hardware whilst waiting for an A1 and OS4 combo - you forget the basics!!!)

Cheers

@Rassilon

at me?!?!?

Anyways even with all the dosdrivers mounted and a fresh DVD+RW in the drive nothing shows up in FormatCDRW. I guess I must be doing something wrong.

First sign of madness, that.

Anyway, have you checked the tooltypes on your mountlist to make sure they point to the right device/unit number ? I can't remember the number of times I've forgotten that one.

Also, start small with a CDRW if you can - give it less excuses to go wrong, then push your luck later.

Did you change the UNIT tooltype of the DVD+RW dosdriver to the unit number your DVD+RW drive?

@joerg

After chatting to a few people on #amigaworld I did finally remember to change the tooltypes.

So now I can Format a DVD+RW, the only thing is that I still can't see it on the Workbench when its formatted, and the only button NOT ghosted in FormatCDRW is Quick format.

So I still can't get to rite to the DVD+RW

@Rassilon

Don't confuse "Blank" with "Format". If the "Quick Format" button is "available", then the disc is blank and must be formatted.

If the "Blank" button is "available", then the disk is formatted and ready for use.

It seems to be a bug in FormatCDRW which doesn't happen with my drive, but which was reported by some beta-testers for DVD+RWs already. Of course FormatCDRW should do both (low-level format the DVD and initialize the filesystem) when using "Format DVD+RW", but with some drives it doesn't work. As everything but "Format Quick" is ghosted the low-level format part was done successfully, but initializing the filesystem wasn't done as it doesn't appear on the Workbench. If you use "Format Quick" now it should appear on the Workbench and you can use it.

Is there any way to send some files to the cd burner directly from WB?

@ikir

Yes, provided its a CD-RW. Follow the steps already described in this thread to format the CDRW, then just drag files to it. That all you have to do.

@joerg

Trouble is that at the moment when I click format quick it imediatly says 'ready'. Thats with a DVD+RW.

I'm just thoroughly blanking a cdrw to try instead next.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers

@Rassilon

Well that didn't wotk either

So I thought I would try a brand new DVD+RW disk - do the full format, it doesn't do the filesystem init, so I click on quick format the status text blinks for a second but nothing

Could be a problem with the a1ide.device version in the pre-release. What does "info" in a shell display for DVD+RW: with the DVD in the drive, "No disc present" or "Not a DOS disc"?

@joerg

It says 'Not a DOS disk'

I guess this is because I am unable to do the filesystem inititalisation.

@joerg

I found one thing that probably doesn't help - the mount files reference L:Smartfilesystem - which can only be found in the kickstart dir!!

I have made a copy in L:

This path would only be used if SmartFileSystem would not have been loaded as kickstart module already.

One last thing you can try is to use "Format DRIVE DVD+RW: NAME test QUICK" in a shell. Does it display an error?

@joerg

when trying the format command directly I get the error:

Initialising disk...
Format failure: Not a valid DOS disk
