Hi all i have my Nice new uA1 Running nicely on my desk,

i have got a few problems acessing the internet though my ADSL router.
roadshow stars up ok and i can ping the router untill the cows come home but
as soon as i start up IBrowse things start to get a little weird
Ibrowse will work fine on the first 3 pages or so. after that it gets realy slugish, fails to load
images properly and ends up either griming, hanging the system or it just sits there on DNS lookup. when it did the
laiter i attempted to ping the router again, this time ping hung up in the shell!

I am running the newest versions of OS4 pr and Ibrowse!

so, is it ibrowse, or a driver issue?? has anyone else had these problems??

Wizz.

@Wizzard_o

Im getting same problem too on my microA1.

Ibrowse keeps crashing reporting the Grim Reaper window. I have changed all the image loading to external and increased Ibrowse's stack but to no avail.

What is the issue, can anyone help?

Have you tried to click on "continue" after the guru meditation?

Yep, the system locks up (ie the caps lock wont switch. frozen mouse etc..)

This is realy anoying i know its only a pre-release OS but bing able to acess the
internet with a stable browser/Ethernet driver would be nice...

apart from that, good work guys!

Yes but theres only a certain amount of times you can do that before the system completely locks up.

@Wizzard_o

Same here:

I thought I'd got my A1c stable but nope. dnet runs for hours but ibrowse is a sure way to lock it up straight away.

To be honest I think the cpu fan is crap and is coming off tomorrow.
But before i do that my 750FX is coming out my XE and if my A1c is stable then
its a cpu module issue, either heat or a GX incompatibilty.

I've ruled out RAM, PSU's here.
I've tried it at 100Mhz FSB 600Mhz cpu and the problem are still here.

To work around your problem, When you get to workbench open a shell

press stop in ibrowse

open a shell

C:netshutdown
c:addnetinterface devs:netinterfaces/eth3com

look at the DCHP lease time.

For some reason roadshow is only getting an IP lease of 1 minute here, even though my router is set to lease for 24hours. I set my router to lease perminatly and roadshow was ok after that.

That will should stop the hangs you mention.

But like you say Ibrowse just hangs, reapers, Ibrowse network crash. No amount of stack adjustment makes any difference.

---edit update ---

OK so I put my 750FX in my A1c and as i suspected all the problems went away.
I put the 750GX in my A1XE and the problems moved to it.

Definatly something to do with the 750GX module then.

@JurassicC

Hmm, that would explain a few other things. i had managed to get a copy of
OS4 quake (god knows how ibrowse lasted that long!) after installation , guess what.
yep i get Mr. Reaper again! This is sofwear thats MEANT for the A1! as usual pressing kill, ignore etc. only results in another system freeze!

If its the CPU module why was this not tested properly on the first place, i feel like i right
sucka buying a PPC computer that cannot run PPC programs!

@Wizzard_o
Have you increased the stack of quake and using the OS4 Update versione and not the Old OS4 version?

Maybe the gx isn't yet supported by the kernel? Any official statement from Eyetech/Hyperion?

I've brought this to GX issue to Sven's attention this morning. I've also asked elsewhere, please be patient. I'm sure Sven will ask around as well and as soon as he knows something he'll let his customers know.

I hope so, £500 + is a lot of money for an unuseable computer...

@ikir

Setting the stack size has no effect on the outcome, it still crashes & burns!

I guess I should cancel my uA1 order, I don't want to be stuck with a useless Amiga. You would think that there would have at least been some testing before these were sold.

I thought the A1XE had a 750CXe and the microA1C a 750FX?

Maybe the heatsink+fan is not suitable for this CPU. It looked like a piece of junk on the pictures I saw. Can you try another heatsink and fan?

Kind regards,

Dennis

It's the A1-SE that uses the 750CXe, the A1-XE has a 750FX or 74xx. The uA1-C is shipping currently with a 750GX because of a shortage of 750FXs.

Back on topic, it's going to be a real mess if all the 750GX cards cause this problem...

(I'm selfishly glad I own an SE. They seem to have far fewer problems than the XEs or uA1s.)

@DrBombcrater

Part of me thinks it cant be a fan problem because the GX features on the ua1i and that is passivly cooled (no fan).

I do have the odd ibrowse problem - where it just fails to work - gurus etc. I also have the lease problem happening. My network connection sometimes drops out - so I gotta either reboot or stop it and start it again from the cli.

But in my case its a very intermittent problem.

Has anyone tried AwebPPC with their micros? Many of us have received grim reapers
with IBrowse on our XEs. Typically you can just press ignore error and you can
continue normally. With AWeb, things appear far more stable.

@A3000T

I don't believe the 750GX's are suppose to have a fan, however on the u-A1-I they are socketed. Since they are being used in the u-A1-C do to an apparent shortage of the 750FX, I would presume that they are on a CPU card. Do they have a fan as well then? If so, maybe it should be removed, although I can't see how that should matter. If they dont' have one, maybe they need one?!? :) Hopefully this gets sorted ASAP!

Has anyone tried running Linux on the affected machines, and if so is it stable?

@Wizzard_o & JurassicC

Have either of you tried removing the eth3com driver and using IBrowse to view pages from disk or the cache? That would clarify if it's IBrowse or the ethernet driver that's locking up.

I am awaiting info at the moment... But to be honest I can't point the finger at the hardware, from what I have been reading/seeing - I think its pretty much a software issue - ie Ibrowse not playing, but the latest version of Quake running happily for hours... If, as suggested AWeb may run happily, I think the finger is likely to be pointed at IBrowse (sorry IBrowse!) - can anyone test this (I don't have a GX board for myself yet...)

One thing to bear in mind guys - this is OS4-PR as in Pre-release - essentially at Beta stage - not everything will work... yet. However I guess as the GX will feature rather heavily on the micro-A1-I it wll be sorted pretty quickly - but I get a feeling a new version of Ibrowse may sort it!

Is there anyone from Hyperion who can at least rule a few things out here - ie GX running OS4 fine, but minor and soon to be sortable issues in a driver for instance?

More as I get it...

The GX may be part of the issue but as 3 different people are only seeing the problem with IBrowse then surely this is an issue with IBrowse not wanting to play properly with the 750GX and not a GX issue on its own. If it was then surely they would be experiencing random crashes with other programs too?
