Hi all,

I experienced the following problem:

I burned a 700Mb file on cd for the dirst time using the sii680 ide controller
(works great btw: 6 minutes under aos)
I decided to check the md5 checksum before deleting the file:

1. md5sum on the file located on hd works as charm.

2. md5sum on the file located on the cd gives wrong checksum or fails hanging the system
(network and everything continue to work untill an attempt to access the disk).

3. Sometimes power cold reboot is needed to make the cd drive accessible again.
md5sum in linux on the file located on the cd gives the same checksum as hd one.


I even replaced the round 80 wires cables I had with the flat ones that came with the card.

Did anyone experience the same problem?
BTW:
I attempted to burn a cd under linuxtoo : it fails at about 7-10% of the 700Mb(tried twice)

As a short term work-around, why not copy the file to HD or RAM and checksum there? If it is correct, you know that the copy on the CD-R is also correct.

The gotcha that got me on a friends WinPC was related to drive speed. I had installed a recent CD-RW that works at a nippy 52x. The first couple of CD burns were a disaster. I checked the media and it was rated at 48x. I was successful either by using the 52x rated media or reducing the write speed in the burning program (NERO) to match the media (48x, in this case).

Perhaps you have been caught out in the same way.

What model CD drive do you have ? It might behave a bit better if there is a firmware update available for it.

CDRW is benq 40x12x48 1.EG
DVD is toshiba SD-M1712 1004

I'll look for it. I assume I'll need to stick the drive into winblows box?

BTW: a1ide.device didn't have these problems...

Nah, all medias I have are x48, and the max speed ov the drive is x40, and os4 drivers are not capable of that speed yet...

so are you using DMA on ATAPI devices now? ..maybe you should consult the manual as there is no DMA drivers for atapi released for pre release owners.

anyway i dont get your post so its either the above or something else

lots of things can be very wrong here like your ATA HDD selections, many new hdds even today doesnt support 133 , others only up to 66....

i just did what u said (md5sum'd a iso and burned it) ..not a single problem at all and i havent fixed my a1 even.

I tried to outsmart Murphy: I used idetool to put the atapi devices in dma mode thinking that the current drivers will not permit this untill the dma-capable ones appear.
Seems like it did something wrong - it reported that there's nodma, but looks like drive
was trying to work in dma
