Announcement   Announcement : 2 High-end Terratec audio cards supported on A1
   posted by DaveAE on 25-Mar-2004 22:40:23 (5544 reads)
Davy Wentzler has added A1/OS4 support for the Terratec Aureon Sky 5.1
(see here) and the professional Terratec Phase88 (see here).

These cards have 24-bit/96KHz capabilities and are based around the Envy24 and Envy24HT chipsets, which can be found on a number of high-end audio cards. Similar cards like the Aureon 7.1 Space and EWS88MT should work too, although they are currently untested.

With the Envy24 driver, support for cards like M-Audio Revolution 7.1, Prodigy192, M-Audio Delta and Audiophile cards are coming in reach. However, due to the fact that these cards can all be configured differently, they will not work out of the box, but support may be added later. Please send a mail to info@audio-evolution.com if you own any
of these cards and want to have support in the future.

As AHI programs tend to expect stereo 16-bit modes for recording and may crash when getting 32-bit data, the AHI inputs are defined as "Line in 16-bit", "Line in 24-bit", etc.
The 16-bit input modes will be compatible with all programs, but the 24-bit ones must have special support (AHIST_S32S mode). Also, because AHI can only handle stereo in/out, the Phase88 driver is merely a research device for the upcoming new audio system which will be able to fully use its 8 inputs and outputs.

Davy should try to get Terratec to put the drivers up on their website. It would be good exposure to the audio community.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this before.

Still, its a very good thing. Terratec knows their stuff. 110 dB signal-to-noise on those buggers It doesn't get much cleaner than that

(for reference, SB Audigy Platinum only achieves 106dB )

This is an amazing news.
Exelent work DaveAE, keep it up.
This sounds like that in the near future I'll be using A1/OS4 for my music work.
Can't wait that day. Oh what a hapy day it will be

Does AHI support better than 16bit playback? 24bit for example?

It seems a bit pointless supporting these cards if it cant..

@jahc

In the last paragraph of the news you can read:

Quote:

...the upcoming new audio system which will be able to fully use its 8 inputs and outputs.

So, these drivers are getting to their full potential with the new audio system and serve as a kind of preparation for that... IMO. For now it's enough if they "just" work with AHI.. what they do ;)

@all

Thanks for all the nice comments!

@jahc
AHI supports 32-bit and feeds 32-bit samples to the driver in the HiFi mode. For recording I've taken some measures which you can read in the news item.
It's a 3-step problem really: drivers, audio system and applications. One has to take a first step before everyone waits for the other to develop. But, as Cyborg said, I needed to know how all these fancy cards work too.

@DaveAE

This looks great! Expect me to order a version of your software, when I get my A1 with OS4.

Being a composer, I like to have high quality. The TerraTec Phase 88 with 24bit/96kHz seem like a good choice. Dave, can you recommend this card, or can you point me to some other hardware, if I like the best?

Thanks!
John

Depends on your requirements. For stereo in/out I'd recommend the Aureon for now. The Phase88 can't be used fully for now as you can't record or play 8 tracks simultaneously with AHI. Other than that, AE4 does not support 24-bit yet. Both of these problems will be resolved in the new audio system.

Davy

I'm afraid I can't tell you much about it, other than that the goal is to support both the professional as the gaming needs. A prototype has been running a long time ago, but it's being redesigned now.

GREAT work..

Didn't expect to see this kind of driver before maybe a year after the real OS4 release but this is cool.

Keep up the good work!

maybe:
is this an os4-only project? or will it be available for the other os's?
has it any relation to what fleecy often mentioned for the ag2?

thanks and

There is a fair chance it will be OS4-only, yes. It has some relation to AG2, yes, but things change.
