Software News   Software News : New TvR for TV tuner in Mediator
posted by DJS on 27-Nov-2004 12:27:08 (7587 reads)
A new version of the TvR program by Robert Krajcarz is now available. This program enables control of any TV tuner PCI card working in the Elbox Mediator.

Hardware requirements:
? Amiga with a Mediator PCI busboard
? Any TV tuner PCI card working in Mediator
? (Optional) SoundBlaster PCI128 sound card
? (Optional) TV tuner remote control unit

TvR allows seeking radio/TV stations, composing a TV program list, tuning TV screen parameters (brightness, contrast, saturation), switching channels, changing TV window size (from 10% of the standard TV size to fullscreen), selecting video source (TV/CINCH/SVHS), switching between sound modes (mono, stereo) and controlling volume. In the fullscreen mode, TvR provides OSD (On Screen Display) for the performed functions. Stopping (freezing) TV frames and saving TV screenshots to the hard drive is also supported.

You can operate the program from the GUI, from the keyboard, or from the remote control unit, which is also supported.

1024 x 768 screenshot (678kbytes).

Changes in ver. 2.5 and 2.6 of TvR:
? minimising sound cracks when TV programs are switched
? closing the TV window automatically switches on the radio mode
? hiding the mouse pointer in FULLSCREEN
? saving the TV window position
? saving single frames
? correcting the SVHS input operation
? the F4 key used for changing colour coding systems
? expansion of skin management procedures
? adding keyboard control for frame stopping

TvR 2.6 is available for downlod at www.ppa.pl/software/download/tvr_26.lha. Skins for TvR are available at www.ppa.pl/software/download/tvr_skins.lha.

The program page (in Polish only) is located on PPA news sevice at www.ppa.pl/software/software-tvr.html.

I agree, the Mediator is the best PCI expansion board available for classic Amiga. No matter what you want to say about Elbox I don't think anyone can deny that they make the best hardware for the Amiga.

I would like to see support in OS4 for most of Elbox's expansions as my main A1200 is mostly Elbox based - powerflyers Mediator etc

I have nothing against Elbox. It was a hint! hint! call to every third party coders out there.
And I give Elbox an interesting hint about one potential customer (me) and his needs.

Yes I e-mailed them a while back to ask if they were going ot port the contents of their MM CD (basically a load of drivers) to OS4, so we could buy it, but never got a reply.

TVR should work (in emulation) under AmigaOS4 in the Classic Amigas with Mediator and a TV card.

The TvR program is GUI for Elbox's TV driver (called tv.library), which controls the TV card fitted in the Mediator PCI slot. There are no AmigaOne drivers for any TV cards, AFAIK.

Articia S does not allow using a TV PCI card if TV screen is to be shown on the gfx card sitting on the Articia' AGP bus. This problem is well known from Pegasos I. It would mean that it will never be possible to use the TV PCI card in uA1 due to the fact that in uA1 the Radeon 7000 chip is connected to the Articia' AGP bus.

Please don't extrapolate from experience of the Peg I to the A1. A number of A1 users, including myself, have used a TV card in conjunction with a AGP card.

@tjaoz

Eh... AFAIK. people are successfully using TV-tuner card with AmigaOne and AGP gfx.card There is also a thread about using tv-tuner in AmigaOne somewhere here.

I wonder how do you implement features like these using Elbox tv-drivers ?

I have no idea how to implement those.. Would you like to help me with those issues ? I would like to add something like this to my own application.

I did not write that using a TV card in AmigaOne (under Linux) was impossible. AmigaOne was equipped with one 66MHz PCI slot sitting on the SAME bus as the AGP graphic card. In this slot TV card should work in conjunction with an AGP card.

As I wrote the problem would exist in uA1 where the PCI slot is connected to the OTHER Articia S bus than Radeon 7000 chip. (Pegasos I issue.) In Pegasos, the problem resulted in image freezing after just a few frames of the TV signal.

You don't need to use Linux if you want to use tv-tuner. There is OS4 native application for it.

Okay it's not ready yet, but it's already available for downloads.

Here is the thread where is some talk about it.

@miksuh

Thanks for this link. I have just read this discussion. The problem is that the TV driver discussed in this thread does not support direct TV data transfer between the TV card and the graphic card, as the Elbox' driver does. The discussed driver makes that TV card send TV data to the main system memory and then the CPU copies the data from the system memory to the memory of the graphic card. This results in very high CPU load, while in the Elbox solution the Amiga CPU is not loaded at all. The Articia S problem I wrote about in the Pegasos I case is related to the PCI to AGP bus transfers, which are not activated in the discussed driver as yet.

Hi Ikir, I'm afraid that Articia S is the same. But let's hope that Ariticia Sa (or P) will finally be free from these issues.
