Software News   Software News : New OS4 AHI version on the AHI homepage
   posted by DaveAE on 27-Sep-2005 17:54:46 (8019 reads)
Martin Blom (author of AHI) has set up a cross-compiler for OS4 and has built a new version of the AHI user and developer archives for OS4. They can be downloaded from http://www.lysator.liu.se/~lcs/files/ahi/beta/. Please look for the ppc-amigaos archives over there.
This version includes native versions of ahi.device 6.5, emu10kx.audio 6.4, device.audio 6.1, filesave.audio 6.2 and even native AHI prefs!

Although the functional changes are minimal, you are invited to update to these versions. The device.audio might help in running multiple programs using AHI simultaneously. In order to use it, go to the Music Unit in AHI prefs and select a 'Unit 0' mode. This will route the audio to 'Unit 0'.

Hmm, too bad I can't try this out yet. Stuck at work, so won't get to see how this works until this evening at least.

So, anyone give it a go yet? Any problems/issues? I'm understandably curious.

It works, even better, I modified my Play16 alias so that playback uses the redirection alias; that's more like it (device.audio).

Seems DaveAE finally found a way for Martin to do his dirty work...

@ssolie

I could be wrong, but somehow I believe it was Martin's choice.

It's really excellent. The question remains if this is the last ever version
of AHI, since this eXtream Audio is going to take over soon

There are a couple of ways you can test to see if an executable is PPC native or not in OS4. Personally, I just open the file in a text editor and observe the "ELF" string at the start of the file. There should be some utility kicking around that will tell you as well.

P.S. AHI has been PPC native for a long time and DaveAE has been stuck building it.

The AHI prefs in the archive mentioned is PPC. My builds included native ahi.device, emu10kx.audio and filesave.audio, but we used 68k AHI prefs until now. In this release built by Martin, there is now native AHI prefs and device.audio.

@Helgis

Since AHI is made by Martin Blom and not by me, development of AHI is not going to stop, which is actually quite nice. Remember, if it wasn't for AHI, there wouldn't have been Audio Evolution and many other progs.

And btw, your crystal ball may be broken, since eXtream Audio is not going to take over soon. It might take a while, and it will only happen after OS4.0 is officially released.

@DaveAE

Think i got it know. You are right of course. AHI could continue for the
Classic AmigaOS and/or an alternative, while eXtream Audio will be the
next step beyond AHI, right?

@Helgis

There is nothing that could stop AHI continuing for OS4 as well. The fact that eXtream (Audio) will also be an audio system doesn't change that, although eXtream will be more feature rich. But then again, it's not released yet, so currently it's vapourware, except on my computer!

@ssolie

Looking for "ELF" is fine. But I prefer redirecting output of the program
"list68k" to a file. Then I can just get a nice listing of all the
files in Multiview or whatever telling me what is PPC native or 68k.
List68k is available on OS4depot and makes a nice "button" in a directory
utility, showing the same info in a window.

Best Wishes,

I thinking about updating elist, so it can scan all files on disk,
if you like, and display it in some kind of GUI.

it's low on my priority,
