Software News   Software News : New MakeCD beta
   posted by BrandonLee on 11-Dec-2005 9:55:08 (6531 reads)
Out of nowhere, there was a new MakeCD beta release!!!

http://makecd.core.de/ftp/MakeCD32d_public_beta_11.lha

It's 68k and there is no DVD support yet, but it's good enough that it's still being developed.

Good to see development hasn't ceased. Maybe this means a few more people have registered since getting OS4/MOS/UAE.

@All

Hold on. The website says there will be bugfixes but no new enhancements so probably no OS4 version.

I've recently read on an italian Amiga forum (Amigapage.it) that some people have successfully managed to burn DVD-R and DVD-RW (not DVD+R/RW) using MakeCD, since it handles them as high capacity CDs. I don't have yet a DVD burner, so I haven't been able to try this, maybe someone might give it a try? The version of MakeCD used was v 3.2D beta 8.

@Vartall,

That would probably be true as DVD-R/RW's can be burnt as ISO rather than UDF. MakeCD will work on them because the structure of DVD-R/RW is the same as a CD-R. The only drawback in using ISO on a DVD is the filesize is limited to 2GB. To burn a file larger than 2GB needs UDF.

DVD+R/RW are burnt in a slightly different way which MakeCD does not currently support. If there had ever been a CD+R this would probably not havebeen the case

Hmmm, probably that's the case why with Frying Pan I burn DVD+R up to three times faster than DVD-R (same brand and speeds) on my AmigaOne, and the CPU load is much lower with the DVD+R. I always though it's a DMA speed issue, but seems it's not.

IMHO a MakeCD OS4 port wouldn't give a so huge speed gain (seeing how fast is already under MOS-PuP)

Obviously it would be good but . . .

Thanks for the update

A big step towards it, would be a version of makecdromfs.module that supports UDF.

Okay, so I'm not the only one then who saw a claim that burning DVDs is possible under MakeCD. Personally, I saw that claim on a Yahoo! Groups list when I browsed the archives. Interestingly, when I posted to that same list asking exactly how I could do that, everybody told me I must have read something wrong!

I have several times tried the burn-a-DVD-as-a-CD trick with several different makes and models and types of medium (DVD+R, DVD-R, etc.) and every time I tried I got an error message basically telling me that there's not enough room on the disk, even if I only try to burn a few megs...

As for an OS4-native version -- to be honest with you, I find it not necessary...it works perfectly as-is.

@Framiga

I agree. A native version would be great but MakeCD isn't exactly sluggish under emulation is it?

I think all those that are 'waiting for the OS4 version' should make the move now. Firstly, you'd have some fine CD writing software, secondly it'd give the developers more reason to bring you a native version.

Good news.
Maybe, soon, we'll have an OS4 native version.

I don't agree with you. It may work fine, but we shouldn't need to use an emulator to do basic things like burning CDs/DVDs.

Kind regards,

Dennis

@all

I think the unregistered version allows you to burn about 100MB, that should be enough to give you an impression of how fast it works.

Reading what's written on the website, it looks unlikely that DVD or OS4 native support are likely. You could always ask how many new registrations they'd need before they considered it.

I think that if you do want to burn DVDs, your best bet is to register FryingPan.
