Software News   Software News : New MakeCD beta
   posted by BrandonLee on 11-Dec-2005 9:55:08 (6560 reads)
Out of nowhere, there was a new MakeCD beta release!!!

http://makecd.core.de/ftp/MakeCD32d_public_beta_11.lha

It's 68k and there is no DVD support yet, but it's good enough that it's still being developed.

@All

Just a warning to registered users. Make sure you have your registration # handy because you will need to re-enter it when you install the new binary. The prefs configuration is in the .info file, so don't copy MakeCD.info over, keep your old one.

@Rob

I believe the demo restricts you to 10 tracks & you could fill a whole disk with that. My first project with the demo was to burn a music CD & I could only burn 10 songs. That was enough to make me buy the program.

It also seems that the demo won't let you make bootable backup CDs.

it has been written in the mailinglist that we will not see new functions like e.g. cd text support or dvd support. so especially an os4 native port will never happen if you ask me

we currently only can focus on frying pan where an os4 port is in the works.

byebye...

I think that if you do want to burn DVDs, your best bet is to register FryingPan.

Unfortunately FryingPan has not work for me on OS4. Maybe it's my drive. Anyone successful? Can you tell me the version and your CD writer brand?

Thanks,
Firbodi

That's just too bad :( ... MakeCD is a great program I think. Allmost as good
as it can get, only a few features missing.

DVD+R/RW are burnt in a slightly different way which MakeCD does not currently support. If there had ever been a CD+R this would probably not havebeen the case

Hmmm, probably that's the case why with Frying Pan I burn DVD+R up to three times faster than DVD-R (same brand and speeds) on my AmigaOne, and the CPU load is much lower with the DVD+R. I always though it's a DMA speed issue, but seems it's not.

The world of burning seems to have passed me by. I remember finally getting a CD-Rom for my A2000 and being very pleased. Then CD Burners came out. Then suddenly there were DVDs followed quickly by all this +- stuff. What is going on? How is one suppose to keep score? Is there a dictionary explaining all of this techno-babel?

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

This is actually in reply to several posts...

1) MakeCD DOES support CD-Text.

2) I have successfully used FryingPan with my microA1, BUT it's not the most stable thing in the world. (It's by far not the LEAST, either, though!) Was it worth the registration? Absolutely. The problem I had was if I drag'n'dropped a lot of huge files (like, say, several dozen 5-meg JPGs), the program would hang with the "Updating tree" message until the whole computer crashed, so I had to drag'n'drop the big files one at a time. I was IMing with Faranheit, but he couldn't replicate the problem on his OS3.x setup, so it might be a problem with OS4. My drive, btw, is a Sony DVDRW. I used it in conjunction with Frying Pan to burn several data CDs. I never got a COASTER from FyingPan -- the crashes usually happened during the dragging and dropping. I only have three complaints: 1) the aforementioned error, 2) you can't save projects (as far as I can tell), and 3) you can't make DVD image files -- I KNOW that AmigaOS can't handle files bigger than 2gb, but it would be nice if the program could support multi-part images...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Try the Project Save/Save As menu, works for me.

??? that's not true.
you may be able to copy cds with cd text - but you cannot create them from mp3s for example.

if it would be supported already the author hadn't written in the mailinglist (just 2 days ago) that it won't be supported i guess

byebye...

eep...I stand corrected...I THOUGHT MakeCD supports because I have an audio CDR in my collection that DOES have CD-Text...I just realized I used Nero to burn it!

Problem: there's no Project menu, as you can see in the enclosed screen cap (unless for some reason there's an RMB pull-down menu that for some reason is disabled in my copy):

Both. :) It's primarily a CD burning program -- DVD support is a fairly recent addition.
