Software News   Software News : YACAS - Yet Another Computer Algebra System
posted by afxgroup on 4-Feb-2006 0:15:45 (3104 reads)
YACAS is an easy to use, general purpose Computer Algebra System, a program for symbolic manipulation of mathematical expressions. It uses its own programming language designed for symbolic as well as arbitrary-precision numerical computations. The system has a library of scripts that implement many of the symbolic algebra operations; new algorithms can be easily added to the library.

YACAS comes with extensive documentation (320+ pages) covering the scripting language, the functionality that is already implemented in the system, and the algorithms we used.
This entire site (including the documentation) can also be found in the source code distribution.

Nice. But why? Why make another algebra system when Matlab is the industry (or at least the scientific / university educational, it's what I learned to simulate ultrasound in) standard and there's an open source version (GNU Octave) available.

So any chance of anyone porting Octave?

This weeks pet peeve:
Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean.
