Software News   Software News : The "Digital Universe" version 1.6 for OS4.x Available.
posted by BillE on 13-Mar-2009 16:08:04 (2643 reads)

The "Digital Universe" version 1.6 for OS4.x capable Amigas is now available.

To simplify the distribution, version 1.6 is only available as a free update to version 1.5. It is not possible to buy version 1.6 as a standalone product. Registered users of Digital Universe will be able to download the update from our download site using the details given when they purchased version 1.5.

Note: Some early purchasers of the CD did so prior to the download system being set up and therefore currently will not have the necessary download details in order to obtain the update. Anyone in this situation, please use the Contact Us section of the Digital Universe website and we can provide you with your login details.

It will also be possible to update your version of Digital Universe via AmiUpdate...

(Please click read more)

but users will still need their UID and password to login. Also I recommend making a backup of your current DUOS4: folder before updating whether doing so manually or using AmiUpdate.

For new users it is necessary to firstly order version 1.5 and then apply the update. Anyone purchasing The Digital Universe on CD would naturally receive both the version 1.5 installation package and the update on the same CD.

A list of the new features, enhancements and bug fixes since version 1.5 can be found here.

Always great to see evolving Amiga softwares!
I am interested in astronomy as an amateur, but never used any software like DU.
It would be useful if I can see what it is capable for.

May I ask for a video that shows the software running by an expert? The recent screen recording tool Srec could be used it for good.

It could attract other future DU users too.

Bye

I've just put my order in for this software.

Look forward to using it, I too have an interest in astronomy.

I'll have a look at SRec and see what it can do. Last time I tried it it seemed a bit sluggish to do a video that would be of benefit. Maybe if I use a lower res screenmode it would be a bit smoother.

The real problem for me though would be uploading large files such as videos. Our wonderful telecomms company BT that charge me a fortune for my phone line only supply the lowest possible broadband there is

It took ages just to upload the demos to OS4 Depot and Aminet so any video would have to be very short.

@BillE

Thanks for the update, I installed it tonight and it works nicely on my sam440.

Can I second the request for a video of Digital Universe in use by an expert as I think that would make learning how to get the best out of the software easier.

Secondly I noticed that the mouse wheel on my usb mouse dose not work while viewing the Amigaguide under Digital Universe even though it works fine while using Multiview to view the guide from workbench.

It would be nice if this could be fixed in future as lack of mouse wheel support is a little frustrating, but not the end of the world.

Firstly I think I shall write some tutorials. My internet connection is not very good for large files like videos.

I noticed this myself and it is entirely beyond my control. You get the same behaviour with the YAM help system too, and anything that uses the amigaguide.library.

This is one for the maintainers of OS4. The amigaguide datatype as used by multivew does indeed use the mouse wheel. However the amigaguide.library which many applications make use of, does not. I had hoped OS4.1 would have fixed such inconistencies but it did not. Why one was updated and not the other I do not know. Ask the Friedens or an OS4 developer, as I cannot help here

Sounds good. Playing around with Digital Universe is both fun and interesting, but I expect use new users would benefit allot from some tutorials or demos.

Not the end of the world I can still remember how to use the scrollbar.
