Good news, but what's with the "MK-II" naming? I didn't see anything in the specs to indicate anything actually "new" about this Mediator. Similarily, you cannot purchase it separately, only as part of this bundle....so I really wonder if this is just a marketing name and nothing technically new.

I'd also like to point out while this classic hardware is great, like the ZorRAM board it's lacking proper OS4 Classic support. While it may be possible to get it to work on blizzard PPC/A1200 OS4 systems, the Radeon driver is still very limited in how much memory it can use, and is not optimal nor a properly written OS4 device driver. Also you have to disable the Hyperion native Mediator support in order for it to work. It's kludgy.

I'd like to see Elbox-supplied native driver support for their hardware for OS4 classic and some cooperation between Hyperion and Elbox. I thought there was some press release about this way back....(cooperation).

What is it with OS4 classic anyway and hardware drivers? Is there really no one out there interested in writing any drivers for OS4 classic?

Maybe NO ONE is running OS4 classic ?? :(

I would be very much in favour of an agreement for cooperation between Hyperion and Elbox. Elbox have always made the best classic Amiga hardware, and although I am in favour of next generation systems, I would also like to see support for our classics continue for as long as it remains feasible to do so.

Also, if there was cooperation between Elbox and Hyperion then perhaps the much anticipated SharkPPC could see the light of day?
Before people start shouting that there's no market for such high cost classic accelerators, bear in mind that the second hand market regularly sees Blizzard PPCs going for >£600. And CyberstormPPCs fetch even more. There is definitely room for a new PPC accelerator for classic systems in my opinion. There are still people interested in running their classic systems, even if they do so alongside a next generation system as well.

Glad to see Elbox are still alive.

AH.

I don't think there is any market for SharkPPC, what OS would you even use it with?

The only reason things like Blizzard PPC's are so much $$$ is because there are so few of them available.

I think the only market for classics these days would be a cheap x68 (maybe FGPA based) card.

Oh yes OS4 classic, yes I remember that (just about).

Seriously though, the more OS4.x is updated for new hardware (eg PCIe, XMOS) the less likely that we'll see a meaningful Classic OS4 update.

AmigaOS 4 Classic, WarpOS, maybe even MorphOS.

Supply and demand. If there is no demand they still wouldn't fetch high prices even with a minuscule supply.

I for one would be far more inclined to buy a SharkPPC than a x86 based card. For one thing, think about your first question, what OS would one run on it?

With new hardware available, Hyperion would probably be more inclined to update OS 4 classic.

@NovaCoder

The problem is that if you personally would not be interested in buying the SharkPPC then you're bound to be of the opinion that there's no market for it.

With regard to your question "which OS would you run on it?" well, I'd be hoping to run OS4 with it! Obviously that would require some cooperation with Hyperion, and for that to happen Hyperion must have the inclination to continue improving OS4 classic, but if Hyperion do decide to continue updating OS4 classic then personally I would be in favour of that. If it's not too much trouble to roll out the latest OS4 improvements to the classic systems, then why not?

My support for OS4 classic does not mean that I'm against next generation systems. In fact, I would say that given the choice between the two I'd support next generation systems first because next generation systems are more important, but I do like to keep my classic system going as well and I'd definitely be interested in improving it with a SharkPPC accelerator if it was ever released. Why? Well, just because I like to. I enjoy expanding and improving my classic system.

AH.
