Software News   Software News : SabreMSN 0.73 with a new look
   posted by jahc on 14-Jul-2010 6:25:05 (5370 reads)
2010-07-14: v0.73
- Contacts list has been redone, with scaled avatars beside peoples names
- Multiline chat field, control + Enter to do a line break without sending the message
- Timestamped messages in the chat display telling you when someone has gone offline/online
- Tabs open in the background when you already have one open now
- Avatars can be scaled now
- New Settings window, with tabbed display. Takes up much less screen space

This version tries to introduce an Empathy or Emesene style contact list, with scaled avatars
next to peoples names. Also, their personal message or music is now shown underneath the persons
name, so those details are visible on skinnier windows.

The default "no avatar" image has been replaced with something better.

The Settings window has been redone with a tabbed style display. Saves screen space. Especially
when you're not running 1920x1080 24" monitors like me. :P

The all in one style interface (with the contacts and chat windows combined) has been removed, due
to not being able to test all 3 possible settings thoroughly.. and the hassle of maintaining
three seperate GUI modes. So now we have a tabbed mode, and a windowed mode. Keeps things simple
I think.

Theres a few annoyances left in this release. The display pictures in already opened chat
windows are not re-scaled when you change the scaling prefs (but they are updated properly when
using chat tabs). And also, if you have a line of text, and the cursor is positioned in the middle
of your text, when you hit enter, the program doesnt catch the Enter keypress before the message
is sent and the message gets a newline inserted there (effectively getting split into two lines).
I will correct these hopefully minor issues in the next release.. but this has been getting
tweaked for too long, so I wanted to get something new out the door.

Thank you to the usual suspects for helping me out again. :)

@jahc

Seems MorphOS archive contains wrong icon.

You could also save space by stripping binaries.

Great! Will download and test.

I'm just getting afraid the GUI will get larger and larger until you can't do anything else but use SabreMSN while it is open because it will occupy the entire screen!

Anyway, one bug in the last version that has annoyed me a little was the fact that the contact list was not cleared or updated (to show everyone offline for example) when I was offline. Often I could sit for hours wondering why noone spoke to me or came online when in fact I wasn't offline!

Other details regarding this: I suggest not using several dots "..." after final statements such as "Not connected..." because it implies something is happening, which it isn't. Just some details.

wouldn't it make more sense and look a little prettier if you had the tabs at the top of the window instead?
atleast that's how it's implemented in the apps i use. also, sabre is using mui right? i've seen real tabs instead of buttons in mui since many years back?
here's an example on what i mean.

Deniil:
I had the same thought in the beginning for the sabre getting bigger and bigger but now with scale funktion you can scale the avatars really small so it doesnt take up too much space and still look good. With the last version jahc made it work really great when comparing to the early avatar versions. I also make TheBar.mcc to use borderless and scaled down to 70% to take less space.

Thanks Jahc and Mick. Best release so far.

Looks great...

Soon Linux users will want a port to replace sh*tty Pidgin/Empathy.

Keep up the good work man!

@spotup

I thought having vertical tabs would be better than horizontal "actual" tabs, just in case theres more categories in future, and the window needs to go wider to fit more options there...

@mrodfr

I'll be working on an OS3 compile next, I just gotta convert bits from Picasso96 to CyberGraphX so that it works with both P96 and CyberGraphX. the AROS version is kinda on hold due to the challenge of working with Zune, and also time and motivation.. I've been pretty busy with study since February. I should graduate within 2 months. (It's only a diploma, but I'm hoping that'll get my foot in the door somewhere)

@Deniil715

I'll note down your suggestions. I've got your email I think still, so I'll be in touch soon. :)

@itix

the MorphOS version was just an OS3 version with better smiley/emoticon images.. because the OS3 version was just using IFF ILBM images for a long time.. (not sure what they use at the moment)..
I think the binaries ARE stripped, but I'm not 100% certain on that. :)

@jahc :

i will test it today in the evening, it looks very promising on the new screenshots.

But there is one very big wish from me, please add the OpenURL or something else into it, to easily access http links on SabreMSN.

For a small motivation, you will get a small donation from me again after implementing it.

Just a quick reminder/announcement, the latest AmiMSN (on my site) has a basic script allowing sending and receiving of offline messages. It will work with hotmail and ISP accounts. For @msn accounts, only the server it logs in to needs to be changed (quick skim of the main AmiMSN source should reveal what needs to be done).

I tried the latest version yesterday for a while (I do IM very little): good work, jahc!
May I ask a little thing? Could you add an option to turn avatars off? And another to hide one's own display name and message from the main window? Thanks.
