Software News   Software News : Cube 1: 3D FPS are out for AmigaOS4 !
   posted by kas1e on 7-Nov-2010 12:27:14 (12005 reads)
The younger brothers of Cube series (there is 3: Cube1, Cube2 and AssaultCube) are ported to amigaos4 !

Grab it from os4depot (for now in upload query).

There is few screenshots (1024x768, 800x600, 640x480):

And video in action on my peg2/1ghz/radeon9250/aos4.1u2 on youtube here

The game feels very stable and never crashes (well, on my setup, so you need test it yourself), with all that music/sounds and good FPS even on our slow opengl realisation !

Check the readme on os4depot for more information and docs inside the archive about how tunning and tweak the game.

There is also work in progress on Cube2 and AssaultCube, and there is video in action of AssaultCube. A bit buggy for now (pretty visibly, there is no hands and weapons in it), so its work in progress for now.

Enjoy !

From what I see watching the video... this is an exceptional effort!

Well done and may this revive the FPS genre on the Amiga again!

just tried it out on my SAM440ep-flex @ 667MHz, just for laughs. it's actually playable, though. the FPS is fairly low when there are many, many textures in the current view, but otherwise fine.

a big thanks from the OS4 community for your port!

@all
For everyone who not want to meet with .sobj hell (welcome), there is a static binary. Just download archive from os4depot, and replace old binary by that one. I will add it to next upload (when someone will found any bugs, just to avoid reuploading of the same archive).

I ported this game some years ago but i couldn't get the network support to work, does it work in your port? What did you do to fix it?

I test it only localy (i.e. by running cube_server, and then from cube_client connect to localhost) and it works.

I just compile version of Enet which comes exactly with the game (the other ones, for example from assault_cube, or some public one, grims/crashes and so on). But because enet with that game use automake/aclocal/etc, i use cross-compiler for.

Hope to finish soon Cube2 and AssaultCube

I love FPS and this one convince me, good music, fun map design, clone maps of mythics FPS... Perfect! I discovered it today and love it.

Sincerely, great work Kas1e! MiniGL performances are this time very tolerable, on 9000pro the game is smooth up to 1280*720, still quite fast up to 1680*1050, just a bit slow on upper resolutions (15-20 fps at 1920*1200). And no crackling sound on Aone!

But actually I encounter shoots problems. The shoot is displayed at a wrong place, using weapons like rocket launcher make instant die (killing myself even when fireing distantly). Maybe I missed somthing?

@Crisot
Yep, you are right about shoots stuff. Need to check win32 version, to see if that problem of port/os4-related, or the game-code itself. But i change some byte/ubytes stuff in some place, pretty possible that is it.

According to kiero, shooting problems are due to lack of support for depth read buffor. The game needs it.

ok, didn't want to spam amigaos thread but since your translation is not accurate i will. long time ago when cube was ported to morphos the problem with shooting (exacly the same as described) was caused by incomplete implementation of glReadPixels used to read depth buffer contents. this was the reason the port was never released officialy. not saying the reason is the same here, but it might give some clue.

Thanks for point !

Btw, did glReadPixels implementation in TiniGL now complete? Did you try to port Cube2 and AssaultCube as well ?

Any reason (except of time-resources-lacking) to no have it in TiniGL ? (just trying to understand why its done like this on os4/mos)

By depth buffer reading... You mean the simple fact of reading the Z value of a specific X/Y pixel, in the ZBuffer?

Looks quite simple, so I surely misunderstood.

(???)
