Hardware News   Hardware News : PCI Update for Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex
   posted by Lecta on 2-Dec-2010 19:09:31 (6674 reads)
Bassano del Grappa, Italy - 01 December, 2010

ACube Systems just released the second part of the PCI speedup for Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex. You can read about first part at the following link: http://www.acube-systems.biz/news.php?id=75.

This patch will increment write speed for all PCI devices of about 15%-30% (depending on configuration). This patch should be used together with the previous patch released earlier to get a complete (READ + WRITE) speedup.

You can download the patch archive based on your platform from the "Download" section of the following pages:

Sam440ep - http://www.acube-systems.biz/index.php?page=hardware&pid=1
Sam440ep-flex - http://www.acube-systems.biz/index.php?page=hardware&pid=2

After downloading you must burn the ISO and then boot from CD (just like you would do to update U-Boot).

Follow with extreme attention and caution the instructions shown at boot and please bear in mind that if something should go wrong your board may fail to boot again. The only solution then would be to send it back to us for fixing.

You can find more information by reading the PDF manual inside the archive.

Once applied, there is no way to remove the patch. Please be extremely careful. ACube Systems cannot be held responsible if something goes wrong.

NOTE: if you own a Sam440ep-flex board @ 733 Mhz, when applying the update, the DDR
will be clocked down to 122 Mhz. This means you'll loose around 20% speed on RAM
access, but will gain around 15% speed on the PCI.
If you don't feel confortable with this configuration, DON'T apply the update.

I wondering whether loss of mem speed will affect me more or less that an increase in PCI speed?

I'm inclined to stay with the staus quo for the moment, but thanks for the option!

Andy

I'm a little confused.

Firstly, I can only see one update, although two are mentioned.

Secondly, the update contains an executable to be loaded into WBStartUp, although the description at the top of this news item talks about an ISO that has to be burned to a CD. I can imagine that that is a cut 'n' paste error, so I can ignore it.

But what about "the previous patch released earlier" ?

@tonyw

You have the first update there, the second is an iso the other one is the "pci update" download from the linked page.

@anyone

Don't know id it's anything to do with the updates (I've applied the new uboot, pci and run the wbstartup one) but my trnasfer speeds from my mac to my sam have dropped from 6.5mb/s to 50k/sec :(

Same experience. Now what we need is an update to DvPlayer with the speed increase of 10 % promised earlier

Seriously, any news to share? A Christmas release perhaps, for your faithful bunch of registered users?

I have had to replace my Radeon 9250 due to a a fuzzy display indicating possibly either bad memory on the card or some PCI data corruption. It will work ok from time to time but reverts to the fuzzy display. Have not had a chance to test it on a PC .

Problem is that the new Radeon card has problems in the 66mhz PCI slot but works in the 33mhz slots.

anyone seeing any issues with graphics after doing the update ?

The first thing that i notice with the replacement card was graphics corruption when selecting an area on the Workbench.

I read on the supplied PDF that on a Sam@733 Mhz the update will clock down the DDR to 122 Mhz.
What about a Sam@800 Mhz?

Thank for reply
