Software News   Software News : Debian Linux for AmigaOne X1000
   posted by zerohero on 15-Apr-2012 0:41:05 (4291 reads)

Debian Linux is now available for AmigaOne X1000 First Contact customers.

Debian has support for both cores of the PWRficient PA6T CPU and can also access more than 4 GB of RAM.

Debian requires some know how to install and use. A special installation guide has been prepared which explains everything you need to know.

A special thanks goes out to Varisys for the initial kernel, A-EON Technology for the firmware changes and all the volunteers that have made this possible.

Registered customers can download the required installation guide and kernel directly from Hyperion Entertainment in the downloads area. Registration enables customers to also download future AmigaOS updates and gain access to the .support forum.

Can Gnone 3.4 be used? Or is that only for i86 Based Gnu/Linux?

@Vox

I dont think it will. It takes time to install so probably something you choose to pay extra for.

If I remember correctly it was a configuration option when I pre-ordered the X-1000. Pretty sure it didn't add anything on to the cost (tho I did opt for a couple of the upgrades).... Hope to be able to extoll the virtues of the new machine soon.

now it would be interesting to see some benchmarks with G5 and G4 PowerMacs, hopefully with the same Linux distro and identical software test version.

the only sytem, where maybe, X1000 hardware will be used: dual core, DDR2 memory bandwich, 3D acceleration, etc.

and yes, linux on 2500€ computer is more nice thant x86 PC at 300€

@Andres
i quote you, now it's the time to see real numbers of this X1000 with the only OS can handle its hardware.

Does the kernel for X1000 has DRM enabled?

The kernel flags are:
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m (or "y")
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS=y

In other words, does Xorg takes full advantage of the video card hardware acceleration?
If so, both for 2D and 3D?

In order to check if the 3D is hardware accelerated it's enough to enter:
glxinfo | grep "renderer string"

Full hardware acceleration will output something like:
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI ****

Software rendering something like:
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer

I'm asking this because I'm trying to create my own kernel for Sam460ex, but I got a kernel panic everytime I try to enable DRM/KMS...

At this moment we have only 3D software acceleration.
When we use the 3D hardware driver ,we get a kernel panic

@tommysame

On both sam and x1000 ? Anyway, all those mplayer/lame/blender tests do not need hw acceleration

@tommysammy

Strange .. I think before that varisys make all the specific linux changes for it (i.e. kernel, and all those fixes to make strandard drivers works). There is a lot of other ppc machines, on which 3d linux drivers works, strange why it didn't on x1000..

well, if Linux for X1000 still lacks some drivers, I would wait for any bench.

There are drivers for RadeonHD5xxx-7xxx.
This drivers seem to be working but i don`t have this graphiccard

1080p videos are a little bit too slow.We need there GPU acceleration in the vlc player,but this is available with vlc player 1.15
