This is the second public beta of AmiSystemRestore:
* I am now more confident about the reliability of AmiSystemRestore, as I have finally understood (and fixed!) a wierd problem that I had previously just worked-around.
* Fixed multi-language installers not starting.
* No-longer sometimes has a tiny window in the top-left of the screen.
* The name of a restore point is no-longer of limited length.
* Now has some nice icons, and uses a proper icon when iconified.
* It is now more clearly indicated when there is a debug log that needs reporting to me.
* and more!

This is a public beta of AmiSystemRestore. Although I and a small number of testers have not noticed any stability problems in over 6 months of use, there is still a small possibility of crashes or lock-ups with untested programs or situations, due to the complexity of the OS patching done by AmiSystemRestore. Please report all problems to me.

Details of the changes:
* NEW: When iconified it now uses it's own icon (rather than MUI's default icon).
* NEW: The length of a restore point name is now unlimited (previously it was limited to about 50 characters).
* NEW: Now has some proper icons thanks to Frank 'cha05e90' Ruthe (which were based upon icons by Martin 'mason' Merz).
Installer & AmigaGuide icons by Martin 'mason' Merz (which TommySammy sent to me).
* NEW: Now uses a requester instead of Ringhio to report at start-up that the debug log is not empty.
* NEW: The documentation now mentions AmiUpdate's RollBack feature.
* CHG: Finally understood the recursive Write() problem, and prevented it from happening in the first place (rather than just working-around the problem after it happened). I am now much happier about AmiSystemRestore's likely reliability.
* CHG: When the user creates a restore point, it now rejects an empty name.
* BUG: Fixed installation failing for multi-language installers with a shared script. Thanks to Unimon for the bug report.
* BUG: Fixed window being tiny & in the top-left corner of the screen, if the program was started iconified & a restore point was created before the window was ever opened.
* BUG: Simultaneous attempts to modify Sys: would often cause the state file to be regenerated, which was entirely unnecessary.
* BUG: Fixed new name of restore point not being shown, when the name was merely truncated & the restore point sizes were being shown.
What is AmiSystemRestore?
AmiSystemRestore aims to give AmigaOS4 a similar ability to Window's very useful System Restore. What it does is create Restore Points, which act as snapshots of your SYS: partition (where the OS is stored). If anything changes on your SYS: partition, then you can roll it back to the time of the snapshot.
Why would you want to undo changes to your SYS: partition? Well, if you install a new program (or update an existing one), you have no idea if any new libraries (or other changes) will have problems that may break existing programs. A badly written installer might even replace libraries (etc) with older versions!
AmiSystemRestore allows you to undo all recent changes (whether or not they were done by the installer), and return SYS: to an earlier point in time. Knowledgable users can be more selective about which changes are undone, with the warning that they need to know what they are doing!
If you are installing something using AmiUpdate or the official Installer system, then AmiSystemRestore will automatically create Restore Points for you (and Ringhio messages should notify you of this). |
