Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : A-EON Technology acquires DvPlayer

A-EON Technology acquires DvPlayer
The premier multimedia player for AmigaOS 4

Cardiff 14th June 2015

A-EON Technology are pleased to announce that, a year after becoming the sole distributor of DvPlayer, we have now secured the exclusive rights from its developer Stephen Fellner.

As part of the agreement A-EON Technology has acquired a world-wide, exclusive, perpetual and irrevocable license to develop, publish and distribute the full Dvplayer source code, binaries and plugins. A-EON has also acquired the DvPlayer web content and exclusive rights to all trade names for product marketing, promotion and branding for the AmigaOS and Amiga-related operating systems including emulat-ion. Meanwhile Stephen Fellner will retain non-exclusive rights to elem-ents of his original source code for potential future projects. The current version of DvPlayer runs under AmigaOS 4.1 and supports the following video formats:-

MPEG-1/2 video streams
MPEG-1/2 system streams
MPEG audio files
VideoCD and SVCD
DVD Video
AVI files (inc.OpenDML extens.)
ASF/WMV files
AIFF audio files

DvPlayer also supports many audio and video codecs via avcodec.library, including MPEG Video 1/2, DiVX, XVID, MJPG, Cinepak, Indeo Video, PCM, MPEG Audio (Layer1-3) and more. It uses fast direct-rendering algorithms for every possible HiColor and TrueColor display mode and separate rendering routines for half scale and 16:9 movies so that they are correctly displayed at the correct aspect ratio. DvPlayer uses a new triple buffering technique which is only available in OS4.0+. There are numerous other features including:- keyboards shortcuts, a skinnable GUI, full screen and windowed displays, Amidock support, DVD and VideoCD playback, subtitle support, support for external plugins, a visual audio scope and many, many more.

DvPlayer was developed by Steven, who is himself an Amiga enthusiast, to deliver the ultimate multimedia experience for AmigaOS 4.1. Matthew Leaman, commented on the latest addition to A-EON’s growing software catalogue, “DvPlayer has always been a favourite amongst AmigaOS 4 users and we are pleased to secure it for the future”. To which Stephen Fellner added, “Amiga was the first home computer to deliver a true multimedia experience. My goal with DvPlayer was to continue that legacy. Now it's time to take it to the next level and I'm very happy to have A-EON bring new life to this project.” A beta version of DvPlayer is currently being tested which supports the RadeonHD v2 driver’s hardware accelerated video playback using the graphics card’s own GPU. DvPlayer is available from AMIStore.

So Stpehen never managed to finish the project announced months ago... Too bad. He has developped a wonderful piece of software.

2 remarks :

1° No, DvPlayer doesn't work anymore on AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition. Overlay support is broken since FE with lots of tearing and slowness (works without any problem under Update 6). DvPlayer is at the moment useless for any OS 4.1 system (broken overlay and no compositing support so no accelerated video rendering under OS4.1 FEl).

2° Would this information had seen the light of day if I had not express complaints about the TBA status of some programs in AmiStore ?

I really doubt Matthew and Trevor have the time to write extensive press reports, just because you made some petty coment about a TLA in the AmiStore.

This comes as part of a series of aquisitions and investments that are really enabling our limited developer resources to push things forward.

Thanks for your answer (and also for the "word" petty you've used, I see you all have the same way of acting whenever some embarassing questions come out).

You may find that acquisition of software takes a little while longer than the day that has passed since you started your "Amistore TBA" thread.

Since you mentioned limited developer resources - are you going to work on this one too?

That is not what I meant. Maybe this info could have been delayed but my "petty" comment has, maybe, accelerated the process since I mentionned many times that DvPlayer would not be updated (and that is the case, it won't be updated by Stephen as was previously stated).

It's as much a (pleasant) suprise to me as anyone, I'm not expecting to be asked, Matthew has a small queue of stuff lined up for me already and I've got an album to finish... I don;t know who will work on it, but it's worth noting that, speaking more generally, just because the software has been aquired it doesn't mean the original author is no longer involved, case in point being RingHIO

@K-L

I just tested DVPlayer v 0.76 with several video file formats on my X1000 with 4.1 Final Edition. Seems fine as far as I can tell. I'm using a Radeon HD 6570 graphics card with the 2.14 driver. Its performing exactly as it did under 4.1 r6

@BCP

He's clearly talking about overlay. His profile also shows a 9250.
Quite different.

Not wanting to harp on again about this subject but this posting is not helping.
DvPlayer is not available yet, to buy on Amistore as it says above.

That said, it's good news that Dvplayer continuing to be worked on.
Always been a fan of the players by Stephen since the days of Riva.
Hopefully a few more codecs can be added in addition to hardware acccelerated playback.

@Broadblues

Interesting comment from yourself.
This queue of stuff, is it anything new or is it improvements to exisiting stuff you have done?

Cheers.

As number6 says : I'm using a Radeon 9250 (as do a lot of Amigans without Radeon HD). Using it with a Radeon HD is not very useful since no vido acceleration is present : it's slow.

@K-L

What machine are you using?
On a Sam460 using a RadeonHD7770, DvPlayer seems to be just as fast as Mplayer using Comp_YUV2 output.

Cheers

@TiredOfLife

Well, DvPlayer is highly optimized, this is the reason why you do not see any difference but there is also tearing with FE.

I'm using an AmigaONE X1000 with Radeon 9250 128 Bits (PCIPCI-E 66Mhz). And it's the same on my Sam440 with Radeon M9. Since FE, overlay is badly used, CPU usage much more high and there is tearing on any video I watch.

I reported this on Hyperion's forums at the launch of amigaOS 4.1 Final Edition (see http://forum.hyperion-entertainment.biz/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2812&start=40#p31646 ). But so far, no answer from Hyperion since then on this specific topic.

Do previously registered users of DvPlayer have to buy it again, or they will have a special discount?

@K-L

I know it's highly optimised, but the point I made was that it isn't slow compared to mplayer that has an alternative to overlay.

I haven't seen tearing using DvPlayer under FE.
Looking at the thread you linked to (admittedly very briefly) I'm wondering if this affecting specific hardware.

Have you got links to clips affected by tearing I could look at?
