All this tells us is that "everyone you know" is so enamored with playing with their Microsoft console that instead of being able to live without it for a while for it to be repaired, they gave Microsoft hundreds in cash more each to each have a personal backup unit. Not many products can boast such loyal consumer reaction in the face of such a widespread and widely publicized problem with the product.

Which part is the quote (since you used no quotations), I am assuming just the sales figures?

I like my PS3 quite a bit. And now I'm glad to see it at the "right" price finally. But sadly my Xbox has been more reliable. My PS3 sometimes freezes if left on overnight. My Xbox has had zero issues of any kind so far. I was a late adopter of Xbox, Mass Effect finally got me to buy, so I had a later unit that is much less likely to RRoD.

P.S. Be careful how you try to manipulate stats, like above where you are trying to show that sold units really are "about even" because folks buy "backup units". To me a more interesting stat would be a mathematically reliable estimate of how many PS3 owners only have PS3, and not Xbox 360. Because as a game publisher, thats really the more important stat to consider on whether to try to cover the platform.

I, however, personally saw multiple acquaintences having to buy a PS2 every 1.5 years...

Seems like the Sony's quality is built on repeat sales after the warranty expires. Say what you will about MS, you can't knock a 3 year warranty. As for my Wii, it's a launch day unit, like other Nintendo hardware I've owned, it's solid. However, I did send it in to get one of the drives capable of reading dual-layer dics as my launch unit wouldn't play SSBB. Nintendo replaced the drive for free despite being out of warranty as they guaranteed that every Wii could/would play it.

I've had both Sony CDR/RW drives and 3.5" drives in my PC's and they have also failed after a bit over a year of VERY LITTLE use. The only thing I would buy from Sony is a home audio system now. Even their TV's lack bang for the buck, I prefer Samsung for the best bang4buck in TV's.

I guess they learned from Zenith that if you make a product that lasts for 10+ years, you shoot yourself in the foot expecting good sales every year. Yes, my parents' 1981 25" Zenith System 3 lasted 20 years...
