I appreciate you sharing your experiences with each, and I don't question the validity of your opinions from each experience. But this still does not address where this started, with your contention that MS should not compete in areas where others already have products, but where its ok for Sony, Google, etc to. And where when MS does this, they are evil. And where when companies you like do it, its not evil/bad/wrong/impolite.

Is this your own form of corporate affirmative action?

Again, why should you decide what product categories are ok for MS to participate in open competition, and others that they should pity the potential competition and stay out of? And how are they supposed to know you are the authority on the subject and what your rulings are for each product category? Maybe I think the ZuneHD will help tp push the ipod further forward. Even without MS, you still have MS’s monopoly master i.e. IBM. Non-exclusive MS-DOS and PC clones resulted in breaking IBM’s dominance. The alternative time line would have IBM OS/2 being the dominate OS. Such situation might worst compared to the current time line i.e. Firmware, CPU, PC and OS being owned by one company i.e. IBM.

In the current PC situation, you have separate companies for firmware (e.g. AMI/Phoenix, Award, InSyde and‘etc’), PC (e.g. Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, etc’), CPU (e.g. Intel, AMD, VIA) and OS (mostly MS).

MS, Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, IBM, Oracle, Qualcomm are not your typical GM style American corporations.

Motorola and followers would !@#$ anyway.
