[provocation]
If really somebody wants to build new PPC cards without worrying about the problem of os4 or MOS compatibility there is still the AROS way...

Ultimate PPC

Any powerful CPU card for my A1200 would be tempting. But then GFX card would be needed... then USB... then SATA... then... I could buy SAM (probably for even less money).

@thread

Not another seemingly insane price for BPPC or CSPPC, but interesting price nonetheless:

Commodore collection

That's right folks...over 34,000 USD...

Maybe we should change the thread title to "are we still sharing crazy ebay postings?" to mirror the amiga.org thread.

@number6

There is a fair bit of hardware in that - the weight of them alone would be quite high for shipping purposes.

Has Toaks' stash been raided?

Erm.. the thread is actually about "New PPC cards for classic Amiga" not about crazy prices on eBay (or even nicking thread titles from A,org)...

Perhaps with all the keffufle, confusion and upset recently over thread titles this one should be changed to "NO New PPC Cards for Classic Amiga And There Hasn't Been Any For Donkeys Years And Their Most Likely Never Will Be Again"... or (depending on how one feels about the subject)

Really. We have an Amiga scientific term for this. It's called vapourware.

As far as I know, "SharkPPC" was pretty real.

Wasn't it just some rebranded PowerPC Macintosh accelerator? (according to the pictures etc.)

The real question is, did it / could it ever work at all on Mediator? Could it be that it was just kept on the "supported some day" list to potentially attract new Mediator users?

As for "now", there are questions like:
-Are there big enough stocks for immediate rebranding for Mediator use? If not...
-Are all the components needed for manufacturing still available? Remember that they also need to be RoHS compatible.
And most importantly:
-Could it even work?

And who would write a software for it...? You need either WarpUp or PowerUp kernel to use it but they are closed source. 68k emulation is also needed.

Quite lot of work for nothing.

Don`t bother anyway - if you want fast PPC Amiga then go MOS or OS4 these days...

I think the "idea" was to use Amiga onboard CPU for 68k, and one on the Macintosh accelerator for PowerPC. (Or at least so was the public led to understand)

...and whether or not that could ever work is yet another question

-EDIT-

At some point they announced that "They're waiting for AmigaOS4 release" (which wouldn't need 68k, assuming you can get it booted somehow) - maybe they just haven't noticed it's out already, and haven't made any progress because of that?

@Jupp3

Hyperion taked about supporting yet another power ISA, so maybe, I don't remember what Power ISA they used, as this thread has been going on for a while, I belive it was double precision FPU type of CPU.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Highly probably e500mc/e5500 core (as used in Cyrus motherboard design).

It was considered for a different project

Nothing works until it actually works, but the people involved were certainly positively giddy about it. Heh.

Actually one of the early questions asked from one of the devs was about 2nd CPU for classic.

Some of the original links are down by now (and not in web archive) but it's it's pretty obvious that SharkPPC was advertised for use with Mediator.

It was also confirmed that (unlike Mediator), SharkPPC won't work on competiting G-Rex board, so that no-one would buy the wrong one accidentally, you know (how nice of them...)

And most importantly, Mediator and SharkPPC are ready for AmigaDE!!! How exciting is that?

But even that will be delayed as they're waiting for AmigaOS4 for A1 to be released (you know, the "previous major version")

@NutsAboutAmiga

You keep mentioning double precision FPU. The issue with the e500v2 is not that the FPU is double precision (remember mathieedoubtrans.library?) but that it doesn't have dedicated FPU registers. You have to use GPRs. e500mc on the other hand, has the regular FPU. As do the e5500 and the e6500 cores.

I thought we were expecting a P3041 design from Varisys? That's the e500mc, which would be all sorts of easier to port to than the e500v2. See my sig for a cheaper variant.

I'm very eager to hear more about the T1 series. And a colleague of mine was in a meeting with Freescale last week and they're still focusing on PPC. But for MCUs, you can wave goodbye to anything that isn't ARM. So Coldfire and HC12 are finally retired.

Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. It's a general thread about PPC accelerators.
You were discussing a project (Shark) and I was talking about Sonnet Crescendo,
which was considered for multiple projects.

I thought SharkPPC was basically just a rebranded Sonnet Crescendo? Sure, others might have also had ideas based on the same (non-rebranded) board.

Just like SpiderUSB was just rebranded generic USB PCI card with a higher price tag (and slightly modified flash to make sure only rebranded models work)

Right. Hence my response which would apply to all those who considered it.

Keep in mind my reply is based on relatively recent inquiries. When the talk about Shark in particular began, the supply could have been greater and in better condition.
