@OldFart

Ok, I'm going to go out there and say that I'd personally like to be able to decompress/copy the OS and apps at boot time from fast persistent storage like SSD into RAM and then boot from and run from RAM, but I would obviously save config data and user data to SSD, kind of like having a running config and a saved config which is so popular with many BSD and Linux appliances Today. You make changes to configuration, applications, etc, but would need to commit changes when you want them to persist after a crash - ahem, I mean reboot.

Ah the usual suspects. This thread is in "Amiga OS4.x \ Workbench 4.x" forum. Obviously Commodore USA's x86 Amigas did not apply. I'd say grow up, but that seems to be entirely unlikely.

Hi,

Of late I'm wondering whether I shall treat myself to an SSD device (Solid State DIsk), as they become more affordable by the day or should I stick to a HD?

I do now own a µA1 which can only drive a ATAPI / EDI / PATA device. When (note well: not 'IF'!) I buy a new Amiga I have to buy storage anyway and the old parallel thingies are no longer in vogue , are they. My son has bought himself an SSD and is very content with the increase in speed the thing offers. Alright he has Windows 7 on it, but it boots in extremely short time, which is on a par with my µ! So I have to better him shouldn't I? Maybe I'll settle for both, but as I now have an 80Gb sized disk which is only partitioned for some 50-odd Gb's, an SSD could do the job too, me thinks? I can always add a Yesteryear's technology based disk if storage becomes a pain.

But what are YOU going to do?

OldFart

Unless AOS 4.1 supports TRIM I'd say you should avoid SSDs right now.

That was a mighty good piece of information! Thank you for pointing us there.
But now I have to ponder yet again...

It just strengthens my points expressed in this thread

Back on topic...

I am very interested in SSD technology, lots of advantages: quiet, fast reading etc...and I was going to get one for my OS4 machine and even my pc one of these seems a good choice:

OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB (285MB/sec read, 275MB/sec write, 250MB sustained) but I didn't know about unreliability and data corruption...

Anyone knows more?

Q: Do we want to have SSD with Trim support in future versions of the OS?

I work for a Company who's an authorised repairer for Motion Computing, they currently put Toshiba 1.8" SSD hard disks in their tablet PCs (J3400/J3500) as optional extras.
The current faults I'm getting are hard write fault, read errors (data corruption) and in the worst cases the drive disappears from the system either during ghosting, boot or while the OS is running!

The only known fix is to replace the drive. I'm sending the old ones back to Toshiba for analysis, one day they might discover what the problem is.

I've posted a question already in this thread, to be asked from The Friedens. So keep your fingers X-ed.

@OldFart

You forgot the SD-card option. As my economical status will take a heavy blow just buying the motherboard I will start with a SD-card as a HD and buy an SSD later. SSD´s are getting more and more reliable and the prices are becoming reasonable.

How about deleting posts such as Koft's that is at worst trolling or at least VERY off topic?

On topic:
I dunno yet, but if I'm convinced about SSD I might go that route.
Dunno about whether I will go the SAM460 or X1000 route either:)

You were actually reported for being off topic. There is a difference - and claiming "site abuse" is a bit rich even for you. The automatic PM you receive tells you exactly why the report is processed.

Well it was something we tried back when the site first started, and we got stupid levels of criticism for doing that. Now, we in most cases do not remove the post (unless it is inflammatory, abusive/crude/rude or taking a personal attack to stupid levels).

We more often just place a note on the post to show it has been looked at now and if actions were warranted, they are typically noted..

@OldFart

We see a big difference in speed on notebooks when SSD is compared to the "standard" 5400RPM disks (people got to have their 320GB+ on their PC notebooks :) ). Not so much if you have a more expensive (but still cheaper than SSD) 7200 or even 10k RPM spinning disk.

The only products that will be sold in stores under the Amiga name will be those made by C=USA. Simply a fact, It's all part of the agreement that was signed by all the parties including Hyperion.... Amiga Inc can't produce an OS of it's own, so it has to produce a machine that runs someone else's OS.

As this thread (MY thread!) is getting rather off topic:
Quote:

You mean Amiga Inc(apable) has finally gotten their act together and really 'produce' something palpable? Or will it be a simple matter of bad(ge) engineering... Only time will tell.

OMG(oats), in what kind of an antsheap have I been poking, just wondering what kind of storage medium we are thinking about when buying a SAM460 or X1000 (not mutually exclusive, mind!).

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

SSD.

Allready got a 40 GB one in my AmigeOne, and 2x64 GB RAID 0 in my PC.

No more mechanical HDD in a computer case, definately. Only a "green" HDD on the network, somewhere I can't see and hear it, for storage.

Everybody talk about SSD reliability problem because of limited writes (1.000.000+) per memory block, but it wont be worst than mechanical HDD getting dead sectors without any reason, or tired of spinning even IDLE.

And, the big point: launching speed. An application starting in 40+ seconds only needs 8 seconds on the same computer.

(I can also say, when turning on PC/Aone simultaneously, my Win7 and my Os4 are ready to go at the very exact same time. I'm not preaching for Win7, but for SSD performances.)
