@Orgin

Could you try with a 1024x768x16 screen ?

Kind regards,

That works. However if I stop amivnc4 and start it again i get the same AmiVNC - main : bind() error (48) as the others.

@Orgin

Then AmiVNC is /not/ stopped :)

Check it with a 'status full' after sending a CTRL-C to AmiVNC (either directly from the shell in which you launched it if you did not detach it, or with the BREAK command).

AmiVNC takes a few seconds to stop.

Kind regards,

I see, well, It has too many bugs at the moment to be useable for me. I'll get back to vnc when you upload a new version.

[edit: and I don't want to reboot any more times today to test again.]

@Fraggel

I'll just add my experiences currently typing from my XP laptop VNC'ed to my A1.

I use WinVNC 4 on XP, but choosing Full colour level.
All colours seem to be wrong, except perhaps black.
Does this mean I have to play with big or little endian, or do I have to play with the RGB settings?

If I didn't explicitly choose Full colour level, I would get the "Rect too big" message.
A1 is running on 1280*768*32.

So I can use AmiVNC for text oriented stuff, but since the colors are wrong, all other stuff is out of the question for now (for me).

Stephane, do you take donations (paypal)? Since I am so used to using a laptop, now I can work on my A1 too, without actually going upstairs!

@sg2

I got errors similar to those Origin had.
I managed to open a 1600x1200x32bit screen on the Windows-side though, but couldn't do anything with the mouse, before AmiVNC crashed.

Going to try with lower resolutions.

I would like to add that it looks like Blue is missing. Red Yellow and Green from the CPU meter seems to be OK. I use the standard OS4 backdrop, with Blue and White, but it is all Yellowish.

Thankyou, Stephane, This is what I have waiting for!

It runs sweet and very fast.

To all the people having trouble with it I find it works best when run from user-startup. I have the following command:-

run >NIL: work:comms/amivnc/amivnc4 -d10

On my PCs I use realVNC 3.3.7 which defaults to auto select for format and encoding. If I de-select auto everything works great with perfect colours.

RealVNC connects with its default settings if I set the -a flag on amiVNC but the colour palette is very low (maybe 16 ?)

Stephane, I am happy with this but it quite often quits uncleanly. It can (sometimes) lock the A1 or just the tcp/ip stack when a client closes the connection.

@gadgetgaz

I put AmiVNC into WBStartup. You can remove the tick for "Wait until finished" in the icon. Perhaps this is the same as the ToolType "DONOTWAIT"?

Is there anyway to make it refresh faster, feels like its only updating at 2 to 5 fps. It reminds me of using AGA at 8-bit colour lol

Other than lowering resolution and depth and using the fastest network connection possible? Hmmm, I guess not.

@jiyong

cpu speed or the network speed is not the bottle neck, around 15 to 20% of my A1s cpu is used by the amivnc server and only 10% of the 100mbit network link

Play with the '-d' option. Try '-d10'.

With these settings I was able to use VVA on the A1, but it only showed the WB screen--I couldn't use the mouse or keyboard to control it. And I was finally able to connect with the Windows client, but only the mouse worked. Also I've found that AmiVNC always kills Roadshow here when a client closes the connection. For that reason I probably won't be using it very much until that is fixed. Otherwise an excellant program.

Excellent work, Stephane. AmiVNC4 seems to work reliably

BTW, how are the Amiga keys mapped? I can't get them to work.

@jiyong

Just to add some more experiences.

Sometimes it happened that after closing VNC, I couldn't reconnect. I think I found the reason for this. Sometimes I would enlarge a window on the Workbench screen to a rather large size (I have a 1280*768 screen) and close VNC. If I try to reconnect, the VNC clients hangs and I rebooted the machine.

Now I thought I'll try something else and I closed the window directly from the A1 and tried reconnecting with the VNC client. To my surprise it reconnected!

So it looks like that the safest way to close the VNC session is to close any large windows before.

@jiyong

I'm completely new to VNC so I would like some help setting it up so I can view my WinXP screen on OS4.

1) I've installed amiVNC on OS4, but unsure about the command and how i run it.

2) I've install RealVNC4 on Windows XP.

What I would like is a step-by-step guide on what to do, this way I will be able to follow and understand the process.

many thanks

@adrianebrown

Using your A1 as a client requires VVA, not AmiVNC.

On your XP machine, do you see the VNC icon in the bottom right hand corner, near the clock? Do you know the IP address of your XP machine? You will also see it when you hover the mouse above the VNC icon.

Set this IP number in the Icon Tool Type "Host" of the VVA icon.

Just let me know how you get along.
