| @Helge
I got one! I'm planning to get a mini-itx case (Morex 3833 Mini-ITX) -- looks like a really nice small case. My plan is to put it near my HDTV / stereo setup for a mp3/mod/internet radio player (at least one use) and then if I can get a nice mouse like the "MX Air Rechargeable Cordless Air Mouse" and a nice wireless keyboard for the couch it'll be great to use my HDTV as a monitor for email / web browsing as I'm looking forward to continued updates to Netsurf / OWB)...
Yeah, you could get a mac mini or whatever but why not Amiga?
On a different note, hearing some buzz on nettops -- would be nice if OS4.x could be ported to one of those platforms and make some bundle deal/contract with hardware companies --can't remember the name of one of the companies but sounds like they have some nettops that run a version of linux -- seems like this could be a potential for Amiga to get in the market but we really need a firefox port or like browser.

| @Foody You can always sell your Sam440 later on to help fund a Natami. But at the moment the Natami is an unknown quantity - no-one knows when or if it will be finished, no-one knows how well it will work, no-one knows if it will be mass-produced, no-one knows how much it will cost (twice the price of a Sam???), no-one knows if a PPC module will be produced for it, no-one knows if OS4 will be ported to it, etc.
In such a situation I would generally recommend that you buy based on what you can get NOW (i.e. a Sam440 - *if* it meets your needs).
BTW, regarding cost of parts for a Sam440 system, don't forget that you need: * two SATA (data) cables (although the DVD drive *may* come with one if it is a Retail kit not OEM) * possibly also two SATA power adapters (if you case's PSU only has the old Molex connectors). * a USB keyboard + mouse if you don't already have one. | the thing is, I don't reallycare about specs. as such as long as I can use it as I would a pc. I can't shell out $1K+ for another system(ummcoughefika)which can't read or write a dvd. That's what I would like to do. I would buy but one too, but it won't be anytime soon, atleast unless it does more than my efika. I can wait on a text inputting word processing web browser for now.

| @xyphoid Not sure what you are trying to say, but OS4 does have programs that can play (video) DVDs & write (data) DVDs, it has two CSS-capable web browsers, and it has an Abiword port. And Sam440 most likely has much better performance than an Efika (although I don't have specs to hand). _________________ Author of the PortablE programming language. It is pitch black. It does a lot more than your Efika (I own one and an AmigaOne G3).
Yes, you can read DVD (DvPlayer) Yes you can write DVD (Frying Pan, AmiDVD) It has the DMA activated on 4 SATA ports (Efika has no DMA with MOS and can accept only one IDE device) It is as fast as an AmigaOne G3/800 in usual working (Efika would much be compared to an A4000 with a PPC board at 400 Mhz) It can have 512 Mb RAM (Efika has only 128) For browsing, we have OWB (I now nearly never turn on the Linux PC to surf the web) You can also use PageStream as a text editor if you really want
I short, the Efika is a very nice board, very cool to use MorphOS on it but the Sam440 is another world, much faster, allowing more things to do under AmigaOS 4. Last edited by K-L on 25-Oct-2008 at 04:36 PM.

One more question about SAM440, can I hook my SAM440 (AmigaOS 4.1) into the TV if I want NTSC/PAL settings like that of Amiga 1200 (in AGA)? Meaning, does SAM440 have composite port?

The Sam440ep has an S-Video port but there is no driver for it, so unless your TV has a VGA* or DVI input then you'll need an external box to convert the signal.
* Before someone points out that Sam440ep only has DVI, there is a DVI-VGA converter in the box, according to the manual. |

Get your SAM+OS4.1 first and then if you have money but the natami. OS4.1 is future OS. Natami i dont know of much but looks like a uphotted classic with newer hardware. Still if you want to go future buy the SAM first. Youll then enjoy alot more apps then on the natami. you already have a1200 to play classic games. |

The really good news is that the "crowd" is not indifferent!
I do wonder why we have not invented a suitably descriptive collective noun as in "a grumble of farmers"? A complaint of amigans? other suggestions welcome if not actually offensive.

You are correct, you and your mates should just wait for PEG3 to be released. That will solve all your computing problems. Cost, power, app avaiability, everything. It is that simple.

''A wait of Amigans''? Or maybe more specific, ''a delay of Amigans.''
I was going to suggest a 'Patience of Amigans'' but realised in time that would be a slight oxymoron. _________________ Official Hyperion Zealot

| After many years of waiting and seeing nothing happening, things get finally rolling now again in so many areas of the "Amigaworld", and still so many people here can do nothing but complain. OS 4 is here, and you can buy a SAM 440 board to use it. It might be a slow start, and certainly the specs of the Sam are a little bit underwhelming.
But it's a start, nevertheless, and i am sure, better things will follow, if we keep the train running...
The worst thing in the Amiga community is not slow hardware, or non existing programs, but the negative attitudes of some people.
Just my five cents... |
