Nop.

on a comercial DVD there can be 3 protections :

1 - the region contrle (1 for north America, 2 for Europe & Japan...)

2 - the macrovision : to prevent VHS recording of a DVD played on a home DVD Player. The movie on the tape is juste unwatchable (I don't mean unreadable).

3 - the CSS crypting : to prevent playng of the DVD on a player (soft (ex : PowerDVD) or hard (home DVD player)) that didn't pay a licence.
Vendors (like Philips, Sony, Samsung...) payed that licence so you can play a DVD with your home Theater (there is a chip to uncrypt).
Some software companies do pay the licence too (Apple (for it's DVD player in OSX), Cyberlink (PowerDVD)..) so the player includes code to uncrypte the DVD.

DVD Jon broke the CSS encryption code. And he spread it, so now Xine (on Linux) and Mplayer (many systems) can play crypted DVDs.

Of course, You can find comercial DVD with none of thoses protections, or only 2 of them (or one ). For exemple some Live music DVD, like Bjork, are Region 0 (no zone / all zone) coded, or some mangas DVD are not crypted.

@Bragg

Ah ah ah LOL

@Tonton_Pascal

"CSS" is not only a problem for our browsers, but also for our media players

As you say, it looks good and I'm sure the author has put a lot of effort into
it. I don't think its unreasonable to ask for a small fee to cover the many
hours of work it took to make.

Once I've seen the demo I'm pretty sure I'm going to register.

Cheers,
Bean.

@samo79

The idea behind shareware is to allow developers to release software cheaper than if it was released as a commercial program and at the same time registered users will get free updates as more and more features are added to the program. The registration fees encourage the developer(s) to continue working on the program.

I have the registered version of RIVA, but it freezes my system half way through an mpg on os4. Steven was showing DvPlayer at AmiWest & I'll definitely register when its available.

@COBRA

I think DV Player is an awesome looking program and from what I have read it seems that it will be a good complementary program for Amiga Os 4. I have just a few questions I would like to ask you; since you are the developer I figure I go striaght to the horses mouth.

1. Will Dv player be an intergrated part of Os 4 or a contribution?
2. What do you envision ( if you had the time and resource) Dv player becoming in the next two to three years( eg... a full media center suit, a whole new Amiga like Video toaster app etc.... allowing editing of home movies)
3.Since css encrytion has been broken and made availible on other platforms will Dv player also make use of the broken resource.
4. I have ask about the long term plans so what about your current short term plans for Dv Player?

5. Have you been keeping abreast of the competteion? and not to put down the competitor but what do you think is Dv players strong points over the compettion?

1. A special version of DvPlayer will be bundled with AmigaOS 4.0 as a contribution.

2. We have big plans with DvPlayer, it will go through many changes, with the I/O plugin API it could become something like a 'media center'. The idea of the I/O plugin is that you could for instance have a plugin to open streaming video via TCP/IP, or show the video stream coming from a USB webcam. Another idea with plugins is to allow processing of the incoming video and output it in some form.

3. DvPlayer will not support css, it is illegal to do so. If somebody wants to make a plugin for playing DVDs with decss, they can do it at their own responsibility.

4. Short term plans will be disclosed in detail in the documentation of DvPlayer, when it's released.

5. I looked at what other movie players are available and instead of competing against them I try to concentrate on the things for DvPlayer, which the other players can't do, or are not very good at, to fill in the gaps.

@Hitback

DvPlayer will not be able to do video editing, it is best to make some dedicated software for that.

@COBRA

Great program, ill have to register when I get paid.
A little question tho, when I try to play .vob files from a dvd I keep getting read/write error requesters.
Is this because its a commercial DVD?
