@Samwel

The 360 seems to be jiving to your more of a games unit then the PS3. Recently in the US the numbers of games sold per console provide these ratios:

Wii: 3.4 games per console
PS3: 3.6 games per console
360: 6.6 games per console

Translated another way
Wii: 4.5M consoles w/ 15.5M games
PS3: 1.9M consoles w/ 6.8M games
360: 6.8M consoles w/ 44.8M games

If you're a company making current gen games the 360 should be your target in the US. It has a larger audience who is more willing to spend money. The chances your game will sell well are favored by a 360 choice.

@BrianK

Depends a little on how you look at it, so far I have bought more PS2 as well as PSN PS3 games for my PS3 than retail PS3 games (but even I am above average with regard to retail purshases as well. Many of them are really cheap and great of good value (I am still looking for Okami (PS2) and plan on buying Everyday Shooter, Snakeball and a few upgrade packs for the short term).

Of course some people may be buying the PS3 primarily as a Blu-Ray player, maybe only planning on buying a few of the major PS3 blockbusters a year. But naturally game attach ratios will increase in course of time, as early adopters will take their time to built up their games library.

Sony advertised last Christmas in the US. There were various commercials. It appears that the PS3 allows eggs to stand on end and blows up your Grandma's house. I avoided the PS3 for a long time because I like Grandma and didn't want to make her house a mess.

LOL, some of the past "This is living!" ads have been embarrassing! The hardware has always been triple A, but Sony's marketing has been "sucky" at times, almost to a degree it seemed Sony didn't want to mass market the product yet.

These ads are well done and timed, I like the touches, kicking "seeing is believing" sound track, some great games being shown and people being welcomed home.

Another thing.. just setup linux and tried to playback media under vlc.. Seems like my suspicion was right! due to sony blocking access to rsx, there is no way you will get smooth playback even out of SD media.
The video playback is jerky, use alot of cpu, tearing thanks to no vsync and pixelated video due to bad scaling.

So much for it being a perfect multimeda box as well as a computer?

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for the win!

Even smaller $99 PS2 coming soon: http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7773&Itemid=2
probably uses the combo chip that was in the original 60GB and 20GB models of the PS3...

Next week, look for Ace Combat 6 on the 360 to give Super Mario Galaxy a run for it's money. 360 hardware sales will look nice too...

Yes, I have a Japanese account called MikeB_Japan.

With regard to Linux, there is potential to harvest the needed power from the Cell's SPEs, they are excellently well suited for the task. But sadly Linux and almost all of Linux software were designed with a monolithic architecture mindset, it will take a lot of effort to clean up the software to take full advantage of the Cell's SPEs. With regard to the graphics chip, maybe a closed source driver will become available for Yellow Dog Linux, I think the problem of the drivers not being open source may also have to do with NVIDIA, they have such a history.

Averages are averages. Obviously the users with more games off-set those users with 1 game. I wonder what the game ratio for the PS3 is in Japan now. Early the average was less then 1 game per console. I'd hope it's up by now.

Comparable -- I own 4 games for the PS3 and at least 10 Arcade games for the 360. I'd have to do a count but I probably own 8 or so boxed games. We're obviously on the high end of the average calculation.

I dont think that is the problem at all, as the gfx cheap is nearly identical to the GF7 gpu series. There is already a open source driver for that, which works perfectly fine for 2d stuff and video playback. The problem is with sony blocking acccess to it on purpose, which means that it would not even work if someone did hack together a driver.

Sure you're different then the average in fact everyone is. One can buy 3 games or 4 but can't buy 3.4 obviously. Your higher then average purchased # offsets the user out there whose purchased less then average.

Story on Averages:
5 guys get fired and decide to go to the bar on Tuesday to cry in their beer. They all spend their last $5 on beer. All of a sudden in walks Bill Gates. He pulls up a chair buys a round and talks to the gents. The average person in the bar is a multimillionaire.

Just to nit pick for fun... :)

Well, no, not really - the average income in the bar may be in the multimillions, but the average person in that bar most definitely isn't multimillionaire if you aren't counting average income but actually just whether or not a person is multimillionaire or not - in that case you have 5 that are not, 1 that is (and more). Average person thus wouldn't be a multimillionaire. ;)

Falcon Xbox 360 Premiums have been appearing in my local stores now as well. I may upgrade one of these days, even though the old faithful has been running just fine.

I have tried GT prologue now and i am sadly still not impressed when it comes to the graphics. The cars just look very jagged on my 720p 40 inch and the framerate had a tendency to drop here and there. So far it simply just looks like the xbox is more advanced machine when it comes to graphics.

Rachet and clank did on the other hand look rather good, but i think the xbox 360 would be perfectly capable to run the same game

I agree on both your points. The PS3, as we've been saying, has the most potential. IF and how that potential becomes actualized will be interesting. I think one of the best games on the PS3 for visuals is Heavenly Sword. Give it a rent. Though again I think the 360 capable of comparable graphics. L

I haven't tried Folklore yet but heard some good reports of the visuals.

Unreal Tourney3 looks like the PS3 version will be highly optimized as Sony and the UT3 team are working jointly to port this to their platform. I'm interested in the results. I'm also interested in the costs of all this work. A recent report had Sony talking to developers about sticking around. In the current gen it appears that the Wii and 360 games sustain a higher software profit model. This is due to larger sales, and smaller development times, read less cost. UT3 will be interesting how much better are the visuals? How much more cost was needed to acheive this over the 360?

The Gran Turismo 5 Prologue demo like RR7 does look best in 1080p, as to if the XBox 360 would be capable of runnint this game without sacrifices what are you comparing it with?

If you compare Prologue in numbers with a XBox 360 game like PGR4, the demo provides a native 1080p vs 640p (?), 60 FPS vs 30 FPS, 200,000 polygon cars vs 100,000 polygons, 16 cars vs 8 cars...

Technically the XBox 360 isn't even capable of producing losless 7.1 audio, I also think the final game will offer so much content it won't be possible to fit everything on a single DVD even with downgraded sound.

They are using the SPEs, so I think this out of reach of the XBox 360 technical capabilities. That doesn't mean a less complex version would be impossible, which may actually look roughly identical in the eyes of people owning lower specced TVs and audio equipment.

Hey cool down.

IMO PS3 should have some edge smoothing. Why does it not?
Yes you can say a 1080p screen will remove the need for it. But still why
not have edge smoothing for everyone else that doesn't have these new
screens? How many have a 1080p screen compared to a 720p/768p? 2%?
More or less?

Also smoothness and flow of the graphics are IMO more important than all
the extra polygons and higher resolution. If both can be achieved then all
the better. But a game should never sacrifice frame rate for nicer graphics.

5.1 vs 7.1 is a bit overrated. But higher quality sound (higher bitrate or lossless)
is of course better. Is there actually any game that uses lossless encoding of
its sound? That uses 7.1 even? Or was this point about the general specs of
360?

Although I agree with your point about the DVD for 360, as I have discussed
with BrianK before.

Heh yeah of course everyone is different than the average..
My point being I have bought more than the average for both games and movies
during the first 3 weeks of owning the PS3.

Your statistics are from the US market only I guess?!
Are there any such statistics available for the whole world?
Is any of the big markets (US, Japan, Europe) better in buying games than others?
