i voted: "yes" since im getting my first cyberstorm ppc these days (paid 700eur for, along with the whole machine and lots of other stuff that i actually dont need because i already have full stock of a4ks in my backup). being that stupid i shall remark that im not going to do it ever again. price of such a card must be seen in relation to what specs it has, so actually your poll is nonsence (u didnt state any). and another thing: i would prefer an accelerator with say sort of 500mhz 68k to ppc any day.

YES!!! £280 is at lot cheaper than the £700+ that Blizzard PPC go for on Ebay!

@Mikey_C

I voted no because I would only buy something new by now.
However only if OS4 goes with it.

ATX, PCIe (PEG only, 4 lanes at least), sound (Stereo), ethernet (1 x 100 MBit), SATA (4+), USB2 (4+), PCI (2+), DDR2 (2+)

With >= 1 GHz MPC8640(D) on board please.

But then, in small amounts the MPC8640/1000 is painfully expensive.
DigiKey wants over 257 Euros per piece excluding taxes.

Although I am stuffing money in the mattress for quite some time now...

If I win the lottery I buy Amiga or even better help Hyperion and make it happen.

Considering this is merely a question with no guarantee that OS4 could legally be allowed to run on a new accelerator, and considering the extremely high guesstimate pricing in the initial post I find this interesting.
Also, this is expressed as a question with NO official mention of intent, which might even further boost the #s.
Wonder what the results would have been 8 years ago.
Oh wait...now I remember..."classic is dead"! LOL.

One more vote for "no."

Classic Amiga hardware is old and hard to come by, so a new PPC card is only half a solution. It would have to be a stand alone mobo.

Even then I wouldn't buy one, since there's no guarantee that I would ever be able to buy a legally licensed copy of Amiga OS to run on it.

@Mikey_C

The Amiga hardware is to old. Even my A1 is getting long in the tooth. I would only buy new hardware that is licensed to run OS4. Hyperion and Amiga need to get it sorted.

Agreed. I wasted a good bit of money repairing my A4000 before I bought my µA1. I could probably put together a semi-working A4000 from the 2 motherboards, daughterboard, 2 processor boards etc. that sit in my closet. However, it just doesn't make sense to me to buy a PPC card that will be tied to old hardware that is likely to fail again soon. I will buy a new OS4 PPC system if it appears in the near future. Otherwise I will probably switch to a MAC.

$580 USD?

I'm sorry, I need to go get both you and ACube committed now, on grounds of insanity now.

Not unless it's a G4 at that price.

The original posting talked of "new PPC cards" - so I would expect nothing older than a G5...

@Dandy

PPC970 is probably older than some of the low power designs from freescale and AMCC.

And I still wouldn't buy one at those prices, either.

I would buy 10 of them - even at the double price. If I sell them new and unused in a few years, I will be able to make a big profit - given the current prices for 10 years old second hand PPC cards on e-bay...

People seem to forget something - while there may be some low number of people I consider insane for paying prices like that, were a new accelerator available, would they want to sell 50-100 or several hundred?

I'd say that depends on the number of classic Amigas that are still alive and used by their owners and on how whealthy they are...

I don't believe they could sell more accelerators than the number of still existing classic Amigas - rather less...

HI,

The solution is Natami+ppc accelerator card!!!

In this way you would have a brand new modern and fully compatible Amiga Classic and with a quick ppc accelerator card (G4 or even G5), you would have the possibility to have OS4 running and old ppc classic applications too!!!
For OS4, I think it could be ok even with the current legal proceedings because Hyperion wouldn't have to release a custom version of OS4 for Natami and consequently broking the license contract but it would be to Natami+ppc accelerator hardware to be able to run AmigaOS4 Classic in its current form and I hope 4.1 Classic in the future.

It's for me the solution and I really hope that the Natami development will go forward quickly (maybe ACube can invest and help???). ACube could also developp the ppc accelerator card maybe???

Maybe I'm dreaming but I'm sure a lot of people here would buy such a configuration!!!

Have a good day and if some guys at ACube are reading that...

Seb

While having a PPC card for a classic machine would be nice, the biggest problem is with the A3/4000 cards as they are limited to the 128MB DMA window on the CPU socket. 128MB ram is miniscule by standards today, and is painful for those OS4 applications that really need more (OWB for example).

In this case you'd be better off with a 1200 version (especially if the Clone-A ever comes out as that was meant to be AGA and have an A1200 compatible CPU connector).

Sorry to go ; but would you say this is more of an issue than the lesser bandwidth of the BPPC cards discussed here?

The reason I ask is that, I've only ever tried upgrading A1200's; but my main rig was stolen and, rather than towering up another of those; I was considering doing my first A4K tower.

I only want new Amiga hardware if it looks like (and is) a laptop. Make it and I shall buy.

I'd love it if they'd make new ones. Most of what I'm interested in for my Amiga is running all my old classic games (Beasts 1-3 + all my other Psygnosis games, Monkey Island, and so on), and archiving them so they aren't destroyed forever due to the ravages of time. I have a 500, but no hard drive. I have a 2000, but I can't upgrade it to have enough memory to run all my HD installed games (plus the hard drive crashed on me, my first ever major crash). Now I have a desktop 3000, which runs great, but no CD drive in it so I have to get a SCSI CD just to install 3.5, AND the current PPC cards not only need mods to work in the thing, they all sell for $500+ USD on eBay.

At this point, I would like to stop buying classic computers and just get the ones I have up to speed without spending my OTHER arm and leg. Bring on new PPCs, and soon! Oh, and compatible with 3000 Desktops, please.
