Why doesn't this manual even mention AROS? Did you really write the operating system yourselves?

Let the programmer who did it come forward and say, “Yes, I wrote the operating system.” I wonder who will have the nerve to do so.

This is not just a violation of the AROS license. It's spitting in the face of all AROS developers over the years.

While the APL doesn't specifically require recognition outside of source files it would be nice if AROS was mentioned especially given the value of the man hours put into it as a whole.

Based on the OpenHub analysis of the AROS GitHub repository, here are the concrete statistics:

Project Statistics:

65,982 commits made by 192 contributors
5,887,200 lines of code
Development period: July 1996 to present (~29 years)
COCOMO estimate: 1,794 years of effort

Breaking Down the Man-Hours:

Using COCOMO Model:
The COCOMO (Constructive Cost Model) estimate of 1,794 person-years translates to:

1,794 years × 2,080 hours/year (standard work year) = 3,731,520 man-hours

Value Calculation:
Using standard software developer rates:
Conservative estimate ($75/hour):

3,731,520 hours × $75 = $279.9 million

Mid-range estimate ($100/hour):

3,731,520 hours × $100 = $373.2 million

Higher estimate ($150/hour):

3,731,520 hours × $150 = $559.7 million

Realistic Ballpark: $280-560 million

AmiBench is not AROS. We tried Wanderer a few years ago and it did not work well for us so we decided to do our own solution.

AmiBench is based on SystemV46 which we have been developing since 2016. It contains the following items we wrote ourselves/not part of AROS:

- AmiBench V46
- Commands V46 (all of C drawer)
- Icon Library by Peter Kuenecke
- Datatype Library V46
- Picture Datatype V46
- Classes / Gadgets V46
- AK-Datatypes V46
- ARM Graphics Library V46
- Utilities
- Prefs
- Various parts recompiled from the Enhancer Software

The percentage of original software is increasing every release.

We rely on the AROS ROM and various system files taken from AROS. We feed back information to the AROS team if we use a component and find a bug in it. We acknowledge the AROS team on the AmiBench website.

Wanderer is not AROS Wanderer is a replacable front end to AROS no different than Workbench is on AmigaOS and Ambient is on MorphOS. You have the ROMs, Exec, Libraries, Drivers, System level applications etc. By using low level stuff it's really no different than a linux distro.

... and on that note - why is there no mention of the foundation for this product? No mention of Linux and all the open source components of various licenses that goes into the whole emulator frontend?

If you have further question look here: https://aros.sourceforge.io/license.html

Linux is GPL (mostly)

@OneTimer1

Nice non-answer.

These products use OrangePi zero 3, the "native" OS being Orange Pi OS, which despite being GPL etc, is still copyright, as a _binary_ distribution, of Shenzhen Xunlong Software Co. An alternative is to use Armbian, Debian or other, each with their respective copyrights.

Unless AmigaKit are building and maintaining their own Linux distribution from source, doing necessary the rebranding, and not using binaries from some other distribution, they may put themselves at risk by not doing appropriate acknowledgement. How likely is it that AmigaKit is not using an existing Linux distribution and instead build everything themselves from source?

(for what it's worth - it's not _that_ hard to do, it's my own preferred way of using Linux)

Funny I replaced the AmigaOS crap on my classic Amiga. I didn't want to be stuck in 1992. ;D

Please read section 3.6 of the license, which states what happens when distributing an executable version.

Section 3.6 requires a clear statement that the components distributed in binary form have code available under the AROS Public License and that the distribution of components in binary form does not limit the rights of those who receive these components to the source code versions.

It also states where this information should be placed.

@retrofaza

The APL is a file level copy left not a program level copy left this distinction matters as a program can be modified by adding source files and those new source files are not automatically licensed APL.

I've ordered one of these last week and am located in the UK.

Thank you
