| Is there an Animated GIF Viewer for ECS 68000 Amigas other than MultiView? At 2.65 Mips I know my A2000 isn't going to play GIF's silky smooth but just a noticeable improvement would be welcome. _________________ A1200+Mediator+Voodoo3+040+130mbRAM+0S3.9 A2000+Supra28mhz+9mbRAM+OS3.2.2, CD32 & WinUAE |

Thanks, that looked promising but unfortunately its 020+ only . _________________ A1200+Mediator+Voodoo3+040+130mbRAM+0S3.9 A2000+Supra28mhz+9mbRAM+OS3.2.2, CD32 & WinUAE |

As keeper of the AmigaOS during olden days, I have no better recommendation than Olaf's program. When he posted about the program here, he made only mention of 68k. I had no idea it required an 020 or better.
That being said, considering an upgrade to 020 is certainly one option, but I gather you don't wish to go that direction.
Next question then would be "what version of AmigaOS are you using", since other options are dependent on OS version.
Another option (although I realize you want something simple and stand alone) would be to use one of the paint programs or browsers that support Animated GIF. Let us know if you have either IBrowse or Aweb.

Yes it states in the ViewGIF.doc “Any Amiga with OS3.X and a '020 CPU will do” but no mention on Aminet.
Not looking to upgrade the CPU at the moment (maybe a V4 one day), I have everything else working well & fast enough on my A2000 set up (use a copy of it on my A500's).
I am running OS3.2.2.1 & have AWeb APL Lite 3.5.09 (Jan 13 2008) mc68000 version. This worked perfectly including Animated GIFs under OS3.1. Unfortunately it doesn't work under OS3.2 . This was shared with OS3.2 developers over at EAB a while back (by someone else & I confirmed). A bit off topic but it works perfectly under OS3.2 if you have an 020+ (checked on WinUAE).
I have SimpleHTML (works but doesn't show Animated GIFs) & also AWeb 2.1 Local_Demo (6.3.97) which works fine but isn't capable of showing Animated GIF's (unless there is some add on for it that I don't know about).
OS3.2 is great IMHO & this is the only issue I have had with it, I would never go back to OS3.1 over this minor fly in the ointment. GIF's have been an issue in OS3.2 on plain 68000 Amigas hence Hotfix 3.2.2.1. I could be wrong but possibly they still are to some degree, maybe that's why AWeb 3 is still not working.
If AWeb 3 was working, is there any way to use it to just view Animated GIFs?
When it comes to paint programs I could be wrong but I don't think any of them having Animated GIF players, there just useful for importing or exporting.

Thanks for the recompile, I get error opening screen, instead of Software failure now. ViewGIF is unfortunately clearly pretty much useless on ECS. It was worth a try. _________________ A1200+Mediator+Voodoo3+040+130mbRAM+0S3.9 A2000+Supra28mhz+9mbRAM+OS3.2.2, CD32 & WinUAE |

Thank you for the additional system info. That helps.
Rather than my explaining your other options, I'll just ask you to read the following thread, which outlines AnimatedIcon, Picshow, as well as illustrating some conflicts:
Source
It's been a while since I used Ibrowse and Aweb, but I know that both could load a local file and display it. However, this was under AmigaOS 3.9 and I have no clue whether this still works under the 3.2 version of the OS.
Good luck.

That was a very useful link.
@thomas
Viewanim worked great but as you say its very basic. The key info (that you mention) in the link number6 provided was the need to remove GIFANIM.datatype from Devs (Viewanim, PicShow & AnimatedIcon all need this removed)! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I already had PicShow installed & would never of thought I needed to remove gifanim.datatype to view GIF anim files .
Although PicShow works okay (not completely smooth but way better than MultiView) the best solution of all is AnimatedIcon from OS3.9 (with boingbags). I have tried one or two things in the past from OS3.9 on my 2000 without success (020+ always required) so I had given up trying anything from there long ago. It plays really well has a nice icon & you can just drag & drop to play another GIF.
The only negative I can see from removing GIFANIM.datatype is MultiView can no longer play Animated GIF's but as it was terrible at it anyway that's certainly no great loss.
All that's left to say is a big number6 & thomas. Last edited by Tpod on 01-Apr-2024 at 09:14 PM. Last edited by Tpod on 01-Apr-2024 at 09:06 PM. Last edited by Tpod on 01-Apr-2024 at 09:04 PM.

That's exactly why I needed more about your system info.
Back in the day I could fill workbench screen just by dragging one after the other to AnimatedIcon.
Have fun!
Added: forgot to mention there was an update. no guarantee but maybe worth a try: https://aminet.net/package/util/app/AnimIcon

You can also import gif anim to PPaint and save as IFF anim/anim brush. _________________ B5D6A1D019D5D45BCC56F4782AC220D8B3E2A6CC |

The additional features on that update are interesting but I'm more than happy with this old version, nice & smooth, even better than I'd hoped for .
I'm having so much fun I've now added AnimatedIcon to my menu bar. I've got a boing ball merrily spinning around on the Amiga screen as I'm typing this! _________________ A1200+Mediator+Voodoo3+040+130mbRAM+0S3.9 A2000+Supra28mhz+9mbRAM+OS3.2.2, CD32 & WinUAE |

| @kolla I may have a play around with that some time but at the moment I'm more interested in increasing my Animated GIF collection.
I've not attempted a net search yet ... anyone know of a particularly good source for some (a few space or flight themed ones would be nice)? _________________ A1200+Mediator+Voodoo3+040+130mbRAM+0S3.9 A2000+Supra28mhz+9mbRAM+OS3.2.2, CD32 & WinUAE |

I suspected the update had more than you required.
Just had to cover all the possibilities I was aware of.

I had Witcher 508i with 68HC000 @ 50 Mhz overclocked, but many higher-performance Amiga software requires a 68020 instruction set.
I tried Run68017 and it wasn't enough. https://aminet.net/package/util/misc/Run68017
In terms of SysInfo MIPS, Witcher 508i with 68HC000 @ 50 Mhz is close to A3000's 68030 @ 25 Mhz.
I ditched Witcher 508i for the original PiStorm. Last edited by Hammer on 04-Apr-2024 at 03:24 AM. Last edited by Hammer on 04-Apr-2024 at 03:22 AM.

Good to here there's even more options regarding Animated GIFs.
Workbench 1.3 certainly isn't my cup of tea (perhaps that was a typo); personally as the A3000 was already out (with much improved Workbench 2.0) when I got my first Amiga (A500), I grabbed a 2.04 ROM as soon as I could! Nostalgic fun I guess for those who enjoy using it, along with the very early Amiga software. _________________ A1200+Mediator+Voodoo3+040+130mbRAM+0S3.9 A2000+Supra28mhz+9mbRAM+OS3.2.2, CD32 & WinUAE |

Not having a 68020+ certainly restricts your options, so it can be a challenge finding more demanding software that will actually work. Most of the time there is something available that works well if you ask for help & someone kindly points you in the right direction. This thread is a great example of that. Older versions are often the answer e.g. ImageFX1.51 & Imagine 4.0 work perfectly (in Imagines case perfectly if you don't mind waiting a very long time!).
Being realistic, very demanding software that doesn't work on a plain 68000 often only works really well on a minimum of a 68030+ FPU & AGA or Graphics Card. For general use though, one of the better plain 68000 accelerators like my Supra28 (or the Witcher 508i I guess), makes the Amiga much more usable.
One of the main reasons I'm still using my humble Supra28 is for testing; if something works on that it will work exactly the same (has a slow/fast toggle) on my A500's e.g. new WHDLoad slaves (quit key support). Last edited by Tpod on 04-Apr-2024 at 07:00 PM.

When I obtained Imagine 3D and other similar software, I had my A3000/030 @ 25Mhz.
My A500 Rev 5 (with undiagnosed unstable PSU) was abandoned by my school friend when his family purchased a 486DX-33 PC in 1993. My school friend's family also owned an upgraded A1000 which needed chip pins cleaning to fix the stability issues.
I used A500 Rev 5's chips to re-populate my second A500 Rev 6A motherboard with 1 MB ECS Agnus. I purchased an A500plus keyboard replacement since the A500 Rev5's keyboard was crushed while in long storage, hence damaging the membrane. A500 Rev5 was in long storage from 1992 to 2020 and it was transported when I moved into my new house.
My 1st A500 Rev6A (with 1 MB RAM) was traded for the mentioned ex-corporate A3000 (with 1MB Chip RAM and 1 MB Fast RAM stock configuration) in early 1992.
Besides 16-bit era gaming, I used Amiga's CAD software with Turbo Print on the A3000 for my technical drawing in my high school subjects.
256 color gaming was served by my 386DX-33/ET4000-based PC.
I did have unused 68HC010 for the planned WHDLoad games.
Witcher 508i can software switch between 25 Mhz and 50 Mhz modes. Before PiStorm, I planned to purchase a 32-bit 68030-based accelerator like a TF53x card to replicate my old A3000 setup.
My A1200 purchase during the COVID-19 lockdown was by chance and luck when it sold as "for parts" and was found to be functional. A1200 was found in a roof attic in the UK, hence it still has a UK keyboard. I fixed my A1200 1D4's timing issue with internal add-on cards.
I later repopulated my A500 Rev 5 with its PiStorm and repaired the keyboard for my brother. I prefer another A1200 class Amiga. As a grown-up adult, I don't share my Amigas with my brother.
My family has two computers in the 1990s.
