Up til now, I have used NotePad as my text editor. This discussion has been very interesting and I realise that there are many other choices available to try out.

As I said Cubic IDE runs just fine under OS4.X as well as OS3.X and I guess morpos as well (I will get round to reinstalling morphos on my classic at some point).
Its a very cool editor and in my personal opinion its about as good as ultraedit under windows (the best GUI text editor I have ever used on any platform), But my editor of chose under an amiga OS to edit my startup sequence or other random text config files will always be cygnused.
But the best modern programmers text editor and IDE that runs under OS4 in my opinion without doubt is Cubic IDE, and I am a very happy customer.
But in the same way as I still use DPaint and Photogenics I wont be giving using CygnusED as well, its a bit like the unix argument over which is beter vi or emacs.
The answer is they both work well and there are also other good text editors out there so try them out and pick the one that works best for you for the current task you are working on.

Now that you mention it, I probably do vaguely recall my CygnusEd CD asking which version I wanted installed (however that was on Amithlon/WinUAE, and I just transferred all my 68k programs across to OS4 without reinstalling much).
@all BTW, regarding CubicIDE, I don't use it myself but the freebie MicroGoldEd (or whatever it's called now) should give some idea what it is like. Personally I don't need a full-blown IDE (nor feel like paying for one), and get on quite well coding with PortablE in CygnusEd. But if you want to code in C/C++, then you might need an IDE for such an antiquated language...!Last edited by ChrisH on 02-May-2009 at 08:11 AM.

| @saimo Looking at FrexxEd's Aminet entry, it seems to be "totally configurable". To be honest that was one of the things which put me off GoldEd/CubicIDE, because it means you have to look through too many damn options to find what you want, and also it can be hard to figure out how to make it do what you want. (Kitchen Sink syndrome?)
By comparison CygnusEd is *designed* to be a good text editor (and nothing else!), and finding the options needed to tweak it is generally easy. _________________

| Can't answer myself 'cause i still don't own OS4, btw i've always used CygnusED on any of my Amigas and i think i'll continue to use it when i finally have OS4 (i hope soon, now ). GoldED is great but maybe it's a bit overkill for those looking for "just" a text editor.
I'm amazed nobody mentioned VIM, maybe one of the most famous Amiga text editors in the (outer) world, and it's free. Even if it's widely used on the other platforms, the developer is an Amigan himself and still maintains the OS3 version, i think it's a very rare thing nowadays. Look here: VIM Download For OS4 you have both a native and a Cygnix version.

| Another 0,2 ¤ by me:
I am used to GoldED since version ...hmmm... 2? or 3? - so I still use the "free" MicroED, 'cos I don't really need a full blown IDE (Cubic). Nevertheless I'm getting more an more used to Annotate...

| I use CubicIDE on my Sam440ep for editing my basic website, and programming.. I did all my apps with it.. WookieChat, SimplePlay, SabreMSN, RockBEAT, AltTabSwitcher, etc.
EDIT: And I use microgolded for general text editing.

Annotate rocks!!!
It looks clean and minimalistic, but it has a lot of features under the hood you might expect from a proper textedtor nowadays.
- Syntax Highlighting - Unlimited Undo/Redo - Macros - Vertical block selection - Left-right shifting of text and blocks
On thing that is missing is a small button bar for the most used functions. That would be nice.

On the classic Amiga's I was hooked to CED (Cygnused) but this concept doesn't work for me anymore on "modern" Amiga's.

I hear you! I often feel just the same. Since I installed FrexxEd back in 2004, I couldn't remember anymore how it looked straight out the box, so I downloaded the archives from Aminet, installed the program and launched it without changing any option: this is how it looks - and, to me, this looks very, very similar to the version of CygnusED I was using, not to mention that, AFAIR, it feels just the same (f.ex., I'm rather sure that the main hotkeys are identical). Configuring to suit perfectly one's tastes may take a while, but it isn't rocket science (and you are a programmer, so I'm sure you wouldn't have much troubles).

I think FrexxEd was born with exactly the same spirit.

That's what was my first impression!
I've known UltraEdit for several years. I like it since it is not a specific SDK-bound solution, just a pure standalone dev editor, multiple languages (and counting), pretty cheap etc.
But as I checked Cubic IDE @ AimKit @ Winuae... it IS indeed an IDE, not just an editor! I think I'll get it as soon as I'll get the OS (MorphOS is to be said what I'm getting eventually...)
BTW Why nobody mentions Hollywood Designer / Hollywood? This is a builder / editor, too. It is bound to its native scripting language but hey, this can produce apps, too! It is one of my considerations also, practically I'll try to get my funds to get it as soon as it satisfies my specific programming needs (that is, parsing binary files). _________________ Amiga 1200 + WARP 1260 + AmigaOS 3.2 |

| Good day,
At first, in the OS2.x days, I extensively used ED along with HTML Heaven and other ARexx tools. It was simpler than Memacs. When I came across ANN on a Fred Fish disk, it became my standard editor for doing AmigaDOS scripting and HTML. When I stopped doing web design (~2001), I stopped using ANN. Two years ago, I started learning the C programming language. I started using tIDE, but found it limited. When development of ANN picked up again for OS4, I immediately downloaded it. It was my favorite ten years ago. It is my favorite now. (It even keeps with the Amiga naming standard of using a feminine name.)

I can't reproduce this. Which version of NotePad are you using, with which settings, and under which OS? How are you using it when this happens? Whatever came wiuth os4.1. ; run a IconX script, then edit it with notepad and save from notepad and try running it again. The default tool is overwritten.

| Hi Andy @broadblues Thanks for the info. Doh, I wasn't thinking about icons.
Who saves scripts with icons? I do! I'll edit a lot of Basic and Python scripts from ram. Running and editing constantly. Don't have a python IDE or a SDLBasic IDE. So, I have no choice. _________________

Try DECH. It's a minimalistic EDE ("External Development Environment" - launches any external editor and compiler) that I have used for 10 years for all my development for OnyxSoft.
You can add your program sources to it (usually only one main file per project is needed), then you can launch your favourite editor with the source as argument with one mouse click, them compile (using any command line, such as gcc or make on your source file base name), then run you program with one mouse click.
May seem a bit unusual at first sight but when you have you sources added to it, and the most used ones on the quick buttons it's a breeze. You never need the shell again _________________ - Don't get fooled by my avatar, I'm not like that (anymore, mostly... maybe only sometimes) > Amiga Classic and OS4 developer for OnyxSoft. |

| I used to work with CygnusEd since 1994 or earlier. Now I use CygnusED 5.0 Pro for OS4.1 (and it's not beta). It's best text editor around for many years. No-one can compete it. Last edited by Phantom on 03-May-2009 at 12:36 PM. Last edited by Phantom on 03-May-2009 at 12:35 PM.
