Indeed.
Raytracing in itself requires hardly any CPU power. You can do it manually with a calculator (or even on a piece of paper). But if you set some (arbitrary) limit on completion time then you've turned it into a soft realtime problem, at least _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). "If the X must stand for Xena, one wonders if they can't just license the design of the Xena for inclusion on their FPGA to standardise it as a custom chip for the AmigaOS4 platform."
I think the better and more realistic way is to make a new revision of the board and replace the FPGA with the cheaper xena. (also, in theory, a-eon might have those new SoC chips also for Acube's models, and they might be willing to co-operate with Acube to deliver mini-itx version of the new AmigaOne X generation.)
also... IIRC SAM's FPGA is connected to the 16bit 66Mhz bus of the PPC440. I think there is not that kind of bus on the x1000 CPU, so the access to "xena" would not be identical and would require extra SW etc...
Made me to wonder, is there a plan for the AmigaOne X HW brand? So far we only know that nemo machine is going to be released while SAM is not totally cancelled. _________________ - KimmoK // For freedom, for honor, for AMIGA // // Thing that I should find more time for: CC64 - 64bit Community Computer? |

Just make an FPGA interface to a custom XMOS board and bundle that. As in, recreate the channel handling of the XMOS and use the FPGA as interface to system memory.
Would be pretty awesome, actually. Anyone up for it? _________________ This weeks pet peeve: Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). yup. as a matter of fact between the announcement of the X1000, the settlement between hyperion and amiga, inc., and the steady progress of amiga os development over the past year, i finally decided to pull the trigger on getting a SAM just a few weeks ago. it will not only be my first SAM -- it will be my first amiga. |

What I'm wondering is why such a huge price reduction? How long has that hardware been with the retailer? If he is just dumping old none-flex stock, why did he have it so long for if sales are going well?

I notice that Amigakit.com is not showing any Sams in stock at the moment ._________________ Sam460ex : Radeon Rx550 Single slot Video Card : SIL3112 SATA card |

My mistake : actually, the price has officilly droped from 820 Euros with AmigaOS 4.1 to 767 Euros (I was a litlle bit enthusastic and forgot the OS 4.1 inclusion priced at 127 Euros).
Anyway, it's still a good offer I think
@Spectre660
AmigaKit still has some 667 Mhz boards but no Flex : http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=840
And price has dropped too Last edited by K-L on 10-Mar-2010 at 01:59 PM.

... The raw power just makes it go faster, but is not required.
|
Isn't that valid for all? (As this is what I was tryinf to say)
|
Nope. For example when watching a movie you probably want it to run at the correct speed, and not show 1 frame every 10 seconds. Same goes for playing games or doing anything else realtime. In those cases the raw power really counts, and if you haven't got it then you haven't. In raytracing (or anything else non-realtime) the only limit is your own patience :)
[/quote]
Ahhhh - now I understand your point. Did not think of it because - call me conservative - I prefer to watch movies on a DVD-Player/big TV - or even better: in a cinema. But nevertheless: If it plays a frame every 10 seconds I`d say it works, too. Not well enough to enjoy the movie, but it works. It is not that the app would stop working because of the lack of power...
And I can play the videos I recorded with my digicam without any probs with "AMP 2" on my A4kPPC with OS 3.9...
If I really should play a game on my Miggy (happens roughly once every second year) I have games like FA18 Interceptor, Falcon, F1GP, WipeOut 2097 and the like. All run well here on my A4kPPC. No need for more.
Although - I have a project in mind and if time permits, I`d like to realise it. For this I would need more power, as it would involve video streaming and other real time things - that`s why I opt for a powerful, new Amiga hw. And the SAM isn`t really what I`d call powerful enough...

Huh ?
Went to their website, and with the addition of OS4.1 (which is priced 186 CHF), the total is 1176 CHF, which when converted into Euros gives: 804 Euros...
Edit: my mistake: the price reduction isn't automatically applied to the basket... so the total is indeed 767 Euros, which means the price reduction is: -37 euros.Last edited by Leo on 10-Mar-2010 at 05:43 PM. Not such a big reduction after all....considering the large price discrepancy vs. reality, I think the very first post should be moderated.Last edited by HammerD on 10-Mar-2010 at 07:38 PM.

Hah, if that's what makes us men these days I'll see your 1990 EUR and raise to a MILLION EUR!
Yes, that's right! I'll bet you ONE EUR that the price of the X1000 will be 1 MILLION EUR.
