I realize the Sam440 does not require nor need a cpu cooler. My question is, is adding one even an option? From the pictures I see no mounting holes.

@TheKorn

If you don't need one, why would you add one?

To prolong the life of the CPU in a tight/hot/less ventilated box of course

With all due respect, I don't think you thought that answer out.
If the case isn't ventilated well, the heat would just stay inside the case, nothing gained.

@tonyw

You've never heard or used duck tape?

"Duct tape is a vinyl, fabric-reinforced, multi-purpose pressure sensitive tape with a soft and tacky pressure sensitive adhesive."

The only way to break it, is to cut it.

You notice that Yo never answered!

I can't believe you passed up the opportunity. I am seeing it in my mind now, wow a lot we missed out on, but then again the free for all mayhem after would have been uncontrollable.

Deniil715 got it right. The lower the temp the longer it will last. I would also be lying if I said I didn't want higher clocks also.

I believe it is an ironical response. If not, there's been a fuse somewhere...

Are you all morons? (except TheKorn)

It's common knowledge, at least to most of us, that the colder a piece of silicon electronic is (within specs) the longer it's average life time is.

Having a heatsink on a chip that gets more or less hot is always better than not having it, especially if the airflow is limited. Why? Because if the airflow is limited, it is even more important that the limited air can pick up as much heat as it can before leaving the box and it does that better when passing though a heatsink than just passing over a small flat surface.

If I ever get to buy a Sam I will most likely put a heatsink on the CPU since I will have it in a fanless, although halv open, box.

So which one would you use? The multi-purpose tape or the one for holding down ducks.

According to the cpu doc, you can attach a heatsink with double sided thermal tape, no grease needed. You still need moving air through the case to make it work. Max frequency of the cpu is 667MHz & because of the high clock rate, it's most likely generated on the cpu chip & can't be changed.

@Hypex

I've crossed paths with 2 nesting ducks in my life & I could have used a roll of duck tape in both cases!

Yes is a good idea to put one cooler for the CPU but the best option is for the GPU from ATI but the problem is that current PC's fan coolers are impossible to put in these CPU and GPU, the best option is as I did to put one cooler fan in the case, and nextly in my new hard disk one cooler fan for har disk because although the Sam doesn't needs the coolers isn't bad idea to put someone, why? I have a bad experience in my Amiga 500 with the Vortex AT-Once because the 286 CPU is burned, for the heat in a close case, and the new coolers haven't much noise.

Oh, that's funny...
I just felt I posted a perfectly sane and logical comment and then I got ridiculed for it!!?! That kind of ####ed me off a little....

If sam has working tempreature sensor, in case of crowded case I would go for case fan first, load the cpu and watch with ambient temp about 27C.
Easier and cheapier if it stays cool within specs (cae fan can be larger than cpu one, and thus quieter, and there's not much sense in ciculating air inside case, will misty delay the overheating).
If cpu fan is required, it's a pity there are no mounting holes. Means thermal glue shoud be used and not paste which is more effective (can easily make a difference of 10 degrees).

My 2p on the issue.

Jack

The others were making fun of your sentence. Tight, hot box? Can you think of anything else that could mean? :)
