Should I get a Sam460ex now?

I would like to get my hands on some hardware that runs Amiga OS4.1. The only brand new option right now is the X5000, which, is kinda too expensive for someone who wants to play around with Amiga OS. I found a used Sam460ex which I am considering purchasing, but first I have a few questions :)

1. How does the Sam460ex compare to the mythical (so far) A1222 board?
2. Can I install Amiga OS4.1 from the SD Card, so I don't have to install a CD-ROM drive?
3. Can I use the onboard SATA if only using a single SATA device (HDD), or I still have to put a SATA card?
4. The Sam46ex came out in 2010, that's nearly 9 years ago. Considering the age of the board, will it still work ok, or there might be issues cropping up?

Thanks for any feedback :)

@Everblue

I am waiting for the A1222 myself.

The SAM will probably work fine even if it is getting old but the A1222 is new, comes with a warranty and should be just a few more months away

Btw. love your avatar as gems and minerals is my other passion (and what I work with for a living

1. I think onky beta testers know. Comparing the 460 to what is available now, that us the other Amigaone’s or Pegasos, it is a good allrounder.
It allso runs Morphos which the Tabor not does.

2. From http://www.acube-systems.biz/index.php?page=hardware&pid=5

How can the operating system be loaded?

It is possible to load the operating system from a SATA harddisk, a CDROM connected on SATA, a USB key, a SD card or from the network.

My Sam460ex came with in OS41 installed on the SD-card.

3. Yes:

Which setup are possible with the board?

It's possible to use the Sam460ex in one of these setup:
PCI-Express 16x slot + PCI slot + PCI-Express 1x slot
PCI-Express 16x slot + PCI slot + SATA2 port

4. It stil works, put in a nice RadeonHD card and you have a nice system.

As Tabor has weird FPU, SAM460 is a better choice for 3D games. However, anything integer related should be faster on Tabor.

@everyone
Thank you for your input. I have decided to wait for the A1222 for a variety of reasons.

1. It will be new and with warranty, and no fears of receiving a duff board or with having issues a few days later with it.
2. I like the small size factor of the A1222 (not that the Sam460ex is big board)
3. I think that new software will get native ports for the A1222 so that should be ok. I am not interested in games
4. Getting an A1222 means supporting everyone who is still putting investments in AOS

I would love an A1200 running AOS4.1 myself. Dreamers can dream, right?!

I would of said wait for now, if you have a Pc you could play around os4 via emulation. How to do it:

Because of different fpu in tabor you may have hard times not only with games, but with anything else as well. And tabor is not released still, it can take few years more , and you will loose any interest in whole.

In our realms always need to choice from what we have already, instead of waiting for things which may or may not happens.

@kas1e

I totally agree with you. There may still be years before aniything comes regarding A1222 (or it may be faster but recent past proved this wrong).

Sam460 is a really nice system, powerful enough for using AmigaOS 4.1 and compatible with all the recent supported graphic cards.

A pity ACube stopped the production (because of Tabor?) since they could have sold many units since then.

Agree with kas1e, no point in waiting for a A1222 if you can afford to pick up a Sam460 now. Will be 6 months at best before A1222 is available (going by Trevor's recent comment) and then it may be a pre-release OS which may be relatively buggy/unstable.

@Everblue

The Sam460ex was a worse model compared to the 440ep / 440ep-Flex. I vaguely remember the problems were related to certain components not being fully supported by the OS drivers. It also has limited SATA connectivity compared to its predecessors.

Time flies .

4 years ago when you started asking the same question the answer would have been yes.

@Trixie @Everblue

I went from a 440ep-flex to 460ex some years ago now.

The 460 was a welcome speed bump over the 440, it is lacking SATA ports compared to the 440 but mine had a SATA card included so has plenty with that. There is also a bootable SD Card slot, don't think the 440 had that?

What was a disappointment was the lack of 3D graphics at the time, the Radeon 9250 PCI card was well supported for Warp3D games on the 440. I think now this issue is gone for the 460 as it can take more modern RadeonHD cards with the new drivers from A-EON and Warp3D NOVA.

At the time I got a 460 I was on the X1000 waiting list but turned it down in favour of the 460 in the end as it was less than half the price of an X1000. If the second core on the X1000 had been usable in AmigaOS I probably would have gone for that at the time.

At the time I thought perhaps multicore AmigaOS would be just round the corner, must have been around 2011 and its now 2018 and still no multicore.

This sam haven't minigl as the Sam440ep.
And you can research to people and ask them about their experience with the Sam460ex or other models. I can't speak because the freedom to speak about Amiga hardware, OS, etc. it isn't real.

Stick to what you know about.
Sam460ex with a Radeon Southern Island Card and Warp3DSI driver runs mingl programs .
