Some cool Resistance 2 footage:

http://www.gamersyde.com/stream_8836_en.html
http://www.gamersyde.com/stream_8844_en.html

The game is meeting my expectations. It looks great, this footage also shows some huge Goliaths. Resistance: Fall of Man was IMO a good game, but like I said a couple of years ago here at AmigaWorld it would take a while for developers to truly show off the PS3's hardware capabilities, more so than was the case for other consoles.

Resistance: Fall of Man was the launch title which by far best tapped the Cell's SPEs with lots of activity onscreen without dropping frames. But Resistance 2 IMO is a huge improvement. Why such big gains? Well, more game engine code was moved from the Cell's PPE processor onto the Cell's 6 ultra fast SPE processors, the OS has become more efficent and the sequel now supports texture streaming. Like I said back when Resistance launched, the game engine was a greatly enhanced version of their PS2 engine, which without major adaptations could only use the Cell's PPE, the PS2 also didn't have a harddrive which is important for texture streaming, so for the first game all the graphics data together with the game code had to be loaded into memory in one go. Rome isn't build in a day.

Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and God of War 3 are my most anticipated PS3 games.

@MikeB

I agree that Resistance 2 looks like it is shaping up to be a great game, graphics look good and the shooting element (which I found to be slightly lacking in the first games) appears to be smooth and fun.

As well as R2 Killzone 2 is also one of my most anticipated games (one of the others being WipeOut HD which I know have and am loving)

Dunno how much fun the Wario Land will be, but this demonstration is shaky at least

@tomazkid

Thats very cool (the effect I mean, not the game which looks OK).

Wonder how they achieved that as I have not seen anything else on youtube do that before.

Anyone seen the "Light saber" controller for the Wii and Star Wars the force? Had my hands on one a few days ago. Just a beautiful product

http://www.whattheyplay.com/blog/2008/09/30/new-wii-due-by-2011/

The assumption is they've been working (and have) on a re-designed DS and are already showing off a Wii successor with HD visuals that is due in 2011.

On a technical level, I don't know how they are going to maintain compatibility with Hollywood on the gpu front... but stranger things have happened. But, a larger internal frame buffer and the expanding of display modes is all that's really needed for the Wii to do HD now... 2.1 MB just doesn't cut the HD mustard... What the gpu really needs to give it a swift kick in the pants is another internal module that supports programmable shaders instead of (or along with the) fixed-function shaders of the TEV unit. Adding scaling chip like on the 360 would help immensely as well.

...now what are they going to do about digital sound? They could always add yet another unit/core to the Hollywood successor for that, I would imagine... It already has a memory controller, ARM core, gpu core...

On the cpu front, perhaps IBM is working on a multi-core'd G3 line?

I also read elsewhere that Sony is working on an upgraded Cell for the PS3 with 12-15 cores. This will help with backwards compatibility and keep costs down assiciated with changing to completely different hardware every generation.

Rumors are 10/2 at 5 GMT the new DS will be revealed. IMO it better be shipping in significant quantities for Christmas. Otherwise Nintendo will have an impossible to find console and impossible to find hand-held for this shopping season.

As for an HD Wii. Certainly there will be a Will replacement and I doubt they could go neglecting HD again. Either hardware or software could be used to maintain backwards compatibility.

IBM working on a multi-core G3? Perhaps. IBM seems to want to make the power line an easily modifiable processor. IBM definitely has the ability to make a multi-core G3 if need be. They did have a multicore G5. Why not shrink it down to 45nm or their newly announced 22nm coming around 2011?

PS1 was MIPS. PS2 was MIPS again with more imaging and vectoring applied. Thinking the PS3, cell, might lead to a PS4 w/ more cell and some addons, likely more SPEs isn't unreasonable. Making a Cell based PS4 seems reasonable, afterall they spent a couple billion investing in the Cell. Why not improve upon it? A smaller Cell at higher frequency and more SPEs would be a good move. It goes without saying the RSX should be scrapped and a newer GPU used on the G4.

@BrianK

the RSX may be what holds them back... Hopefully they didn't sign the same contract that MS signed with regards to the NVidia gpu in the Xbox, lmao!

The new DSi includes 2 cameras, SD storage, no GBA slot (makes it less hackable), slightly bigger screens ... but I've heard different things on BOTH screens being touch-capable. It's also smaller than the current DS(Lite).

As for the Wii, they are going to simplify downloading straight to SD card. I imagine they will make a SD launcher channel that runs WiiWare from SD card, or does the auto-swapping for you...

LOTS of new software was announced for the Wii including a sequel to the NES's Punchout. That will sell buckets. Also are remaking Pikmin with Wii controls. I hope it includes Pikmin 2, otherwise, I'll pass on it. Pikmin is an excellent RTS game from Nintendo, despite it's cutesty flowery nature. It's really a hardcore game dressed in flowers...

On 8844, it seems the ammo crate and some other objects doesn’t seem to have cast its own shadows.

Compared with Radeon HD 3650 (240 SPs) or Radeon HD 46x0 (320 SPs) there are designs issues with Xenos.

By the time we reach 2011, the market would have went through 2009/2010's R800 and 2010/2011's R900 series GPUs. Same thing with NV GPUs.

Looking at the video on that page, it seems the Wii is getting alot of 1st AND 3rd party support. Tenchu looks really good as does Samarai Warriors.

I agree RSX is holding them back. I thought back about a year ago IBM was talking about a Cell around 6Ghz speed and twice the path for memory. Such a puppy would be a nice performance bump for the PS4. Likely in a couple more years they'll work in some more improvements.

DSi announcement did come out. Though it appears Japan only until 2009. I wonder if in the US and Europe if it won't push PSP sales this Christmas.

Wii this generation was clearly under estimated by both Sony and Microsoft. Though with the new pricing the 360+Wii market instead of PS3 is indeed what appears to be happening as Microsoft predicted.

I originally mentioned Factor 5 re-vamping RS 2&3 for the Wii on one disc about 6 months ago ... but now it looks like the original RS for the N64 is getting thrown in there as well.
Awesome!
