PSN Network got a bit more unfriendly.... Their new agreement, which all users must agree to, reads "content may be provided automatically without notice when you sign into PSN. Such content may include automatic updates or upgrades which may change your current operating system, cause a loss of data or content or cause a loss of functionalities or utilities"

You are not alone in misunderstanding their reported estimates. The NPD releases data which regard specifically the United States and every once in a while Canada as well.

The "Americas" figures reported by VGChartz regard the whole of North, Middle and South America.

With regard to 360 and PS3 sales, the USA is by far the 360's strongest performing market worldwide. Relatively the PS3 sells better for Canada than for the USA (based on NPD figures), for the 360 it performs a bit the other way around. With regard to Mexico, the 360 sells well, the PS3 was launched there on the 20th of August 2007, so the 360 has quite a headstart there (18 and a half months).

The PS3 is yet to launch officially for South America, the PS3 will launch in South America around March 2009. So a 3 years to 2 and a half year headstart for the 360.

Good information. It appears that this comparision is even worse for the PS3. PS3 sales are at 15.9M vs the PS2 at 23.4 for the same Americas region.

@BrianK

That chart is in some regards misaligned, because the PS2 launched in March instead of November. Where the PS3 and PS2 part is when the PS2 goes through a holiday season. It's also not suprising as the PS2 at the time was at a lower entry pricing and some heavy hitting Japanese RPGs were already available. Final Fantasy and the White Knight Story will help the PS3 considerably for Japan.

XBox vs XBox 360 vs PS3 The PS3 performs better taking equal timeframes despite the higher entry pricing and the 360 having most of its big XBox sequels released earlier within its life cycle as well as many months to even years additional headstarts on the market for many countries.

In concrete figures, units sold to retail worldwide (no estimates):

360's Lead (in millions)
Sep-05 0.00
Dec-05 1.50 (360's one year or more headstart in North America, Europe, Japan, etc)
Mar-06 3.20
Jun-06 5.00
Sep-06 6.00
Dec-06 8.72 (the biggest gap in sales)
Mar-07 7.29 (PS3 launch in PAL regions)
Jun-07 7.28
Sep-07 7.77
Dec-07 7.17
Mar-08 6.15
Jun-08 5.89 (the lowest recorded gap since the PS3's launch)

* For the period June 2008 to September 2008, it seems the gap has become smaller yet again.

Christmas 2008 will be interesting, I expect the 360 to do well but drop in sales next year.

The chart is weeks from launch. It's not misaligned from that aspect.

June-Aug you're right. I believe with the 360 leading the PS3 due to price cuts in Sept. Japan and US this is true. I believe for Europe it may be as well. At least in the UK it was reported Sept sales for the 360 at more then twice the PS3 rate. As such I think we'll see a slight bump positive against the PS3 in Sept.

USA? I expect Wii, 360, PS3. Japan will be Wii, 360 and PS3 close whoever wins it'll be by a few thousand. Europe is hard to predict too probably Wii, PS3, 360. If the economy stays down over the next year I think things are more favorable for the 360 and Wii.

IMO Microsoft should announce a Blu-Ray add-on this Christmas to ship in 09. If that did that the poor economy would be in 360's favor over the PS3. People would gift 360s this year and the Blu-Ray add-on next year. Sure in the end it'll cost as much. But parents will be happy spending it over 2 years.

360 surpasses the Gamecube and will to outsell the Xbox by Jan 09. 360 will beat the Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis by fall of 09.

@BrianK

Spotted Wii Sports in the movie "Trophic Thunder"!

The personal manager of one of the two "big actors" in the movie talks by phone with his customer playing wii sports in more than one scene.

I guess Nintendo payed LOTS of money for that!

LOL! Didn't they all "finish last"?

Anyway, things have been looking brighter in Japan for MS and not so much for PS3...

Latest PS3 vs 360 figures:

360's Lead (in millions)
Sep-05 0.00
Dec-05 1.50 (360's one year or more headstart in North America, Europe, Japan, etc)
Mar-06 3.20
Jun-06 5.00
Sep-06 6.00
Dec-06 8.72 (the biggest gap in sales)
Mar-07 7.29 (PS3 launch in PAL regions)
Jun-07 7.28
Sep-07 7.77
Dec-07 7.17
Mar-08 6.15
Jun-08 5.89
Sep-08 5.66 (the lowest recorded gap since the PS3's launch)

The PS2 did even better for the previous quarter, outselling the 360 by 300K.

It's also interesting to note multi-platform publishers Ubisoft just like EA generated well more revenue on the PS3 than on the 360, pretty remarkable considering the 360's 1 year to several years headstart. The PS3 does well, software sells more on the PS3 when looking at the amount of sales per user per month of ownership.

I don't know about that. The Genesis came out as the NES was ending. It sold very well and the SNES didn't come out for nearly 4 years later. So indeed the Genesis was the only 16bit game in town for a while. The Genesis ran about 3 years along side the 32bit consoles (well and 64bit if one wants to count the Jaguar). According to official U.S market data compiled by the NPD Group, Sega passed Nintendo in 1992 to become the #1 vendor on the U.S. video game market. Coming off the low selling Sega Master System the Genesis was quite successful. In the end the SNES had more sales. Sega underestimated Nintendo. The question is playing out that perhaps Sony committed their own underestimation of Nintendo today.

Don't doubt the power - NINTENDO POWER!
LOL that was bad...
Anyway, the bottom line is that they all did finish last.
Speaking of finishing last, Sony stock is at a 16-year low. An analyst states that the PS3 may never become profitable taking R&D into account...
The 360 continues to outsell the PS3 in Japan...

And I'm buying a T-Mobile Android G1 in 3 weeks. :)

The Cell investments should be more then PS3. The cell could, theoretically, be used in TVs, CD players, and set-top boxes. If Sony can extend the processor into other devices it'll help them recoup their losses in Cell investment. Also if the PS4 uses a Cell certainly some of the initial development costs are carried by that platform too. Sony talked a good talk about the Cell but we don't see them going in this direction.

Also, the PS3 indirectly helped Blu-Ray to win. I don't know what the licensing fees are for Blu-Ray vs a game but it seems to me the audience for Blu-Ray is theoretically bigger then the audience for the PS3. Having the PS3 ensure Blu wins indirectly helped Sony in other ways. And of course with any new format Blu or HD Sony wins because they encourage us to buy a 2nd copy of their large stock of movies. I still seriously question if Blu-Ray is going to make it. Bandwidth has increased to homes close to Moore's Law. Right now a nice number here have 10Mb/s to the home. This is more then adequate for movie streaming. In the next 5 years large bandwidth to the home will only increase. Well and Netflix HD movies to the 360 and VMC are encouraging signs in this direction too.

I think the PS3 recovering profits on it's own in the next 5 years is bleak. Sony wanted a 10 year lifespan, they need it if they will see profit. But indeed the Cell and PS3 helped and can help Sony further.

A public demo of Heavy Rain for the PS3, one of the best looking games announced so far for 2009. The game will have no in-game loading delays like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune:

Everything is realtime rendered on the fly.

In September and October due to a price cut and the release of a Square Enix game the 360 outsold the PS3 a little. But according to Famtisu the PS3 has countered last week by outselling the 360 nearly 600% and it's overall to the advantage of the PS3.

The PS3 did not receive a price cut but especially GTA IV debuted well, selling 122K for the week.

PS3: 36000
Wii: 25000
PS2: 6800
360: 6300

Now imagine what a slimeline PS3 and Final Fantasy XIII could do for the platform in Japan.
