@thread,

Does anyone know if folding at home will come to the Wii/XBox360?

There was talk about it for the 360 last year but so far I havent seen anything about it recently.

Its great that I can use my PS3 when im not playing games on it to help do something positive. It would be great to see it on 360 as the larger install base would greatly increase the overall computing power.

I believe also that folding at home has an overall computing power above 2 TeraFlop, with about 40% of that coming from PS3's.

Don't know, but I doubt it! If it were going to be available it would have been available already I think!

Amiboy, have you heard of Playstation Life... its a new free service to come out soon for the console and it will be integrated with the Folding@Home application!

Its a shame really, all that extra processing power that could be used to do some good things

I have heard of playstation life and I think it would be a nice addition to my PS3, however details for a European release are sketchy at the moment and it looks like the US will get it way before we (UK/Europe) do.

Im getting slightly fed up with Sony treating the UK & Europe as second class citizens in the Playstation world. But im not going to rant on.

Peter Moore talked about Folding at Home on the 360. He's now gone. Chances are that higher priority projects are in the work, such as the new online interface coming this fall.

I disagree the 360 should join F@H. 360 will lose at F@H it wasn't written with large scientific calculations in mind. The Cell had those sorts of needs in mind along with gaming purposing. A number of users will compare F@H results instead of the games. If I were MIcrosoft I'd want the market focused on the games as that's where more of their strength lies in the marketplace.

@Amiboy

There’s a possibility to run the CPU client on Wii/XBOX360 CPU, but GPU2 client requires either AMD CAL or NVIDIA CUDA middleware. Both GPU middleware are not available for XBOX360 (Xenos) GPU. GPU1 client works via DX3D(ATI R5x0 path).

Wii's GPU lacks features for GpGPU type work.

According to a small article in OPM (Official Playstation Magazine) Sony are now bringing Trophies to the PSP!

Microsoft just announced US 360 Arcade will be $199. Supposedly there's a $200 mental market barrier. They expect the Arcade will finally pick up steam at this price point.

Nintendo will supposed keep the price of the strong selling Wii at $249 this holiday season.

According to Dean Takahashi, author of Opening the Xbox and more recently The Xbox 360 Uncloaked, Microsoft deceived its customers. While Takahashi considers his latest report a "final chapter" to his Uncloaked book, Microsoft has said it's "attempting to create a new sensational angle, and is highly irresponsible."

"Incredibly, 68 out of every 100 Xbox 360s made by Microsoft's Chinese manufacturing partners were not working properly. "

However this doesn't mean that 70% of all 360s have been repaired. That was a point in time problem on the line.

Dean Takahashi said in the same article that 1.2M out of the first 11.6M consoles were repaired before the recall. While Microsoft isn't giving out numbers of recall I think we can savely conclude it wasn't 6M more out of that first 12M.

Well its good to see more and more games patching in PS3 trophy support:

PS3 Trophy Support & Bug fixes

I just hope they are retroactive (although I havent really played the Single player, just more concerned about Multiplayer trohies).

@BrianK

But at the same time you can't hide the fact that most people that owns or have
owned a 360 has either repaired it, got a new replacement or several new replacements.
How they count these units I don't know.. But to me after reading posts by users
on several sites it seems plausible that atleast 30% of all 360's made before the 12 million
mark has been replaced with new units.. At a AMAZINGLY HUGE cost for MicroSoft
I would think.

LOL, I say GOOD! Hey, I guess it's cost them no more or less than having a Blu-Ray player inside a console...and having to add a 3rd party gpu because your ultra-hi-tech 7-core processor couldn't cut the mustard by itself...

...and hopefully, Nintendo's enormous profits this round will allow them to superceed the performance levels of their competitors next time around...but sadly, even I am not that naive.

Overall, as far as they've come, no console this round has been perfect. The fact that the BR drive in the PS3 is roughly equivalent to a 7xDVD reader really holds back that system is the form of mandatory HDD installs. Even the Wii has a 6xDVD reader and considering it has to display 1/3 the graphics of the other 2 consoles, this makes it's load times seem like 2x of the 360's shorter(over PS3) load times.

Once again Nintendo focused on the user experience and for the 3rd generation in a row, has the fastest loading system...from a user's p.o.v... My personal feelings is that also for the 3rd generation in a row, they've also had the best controllers. Sony should have really stuck with the batarang controller for the PS3 despite fanboy outcry, all reviewers said it was quite comfortable...either way it would have still taken a back seat to the Wii's controllers...atleast they would have had a third leg (other 2 being overall storage and reliability) up on MS (despite all the other legs up MS has over the PS3)...

The Japanese are now admitting that "Western" programmers are more advanced.
http://kotaku.com/5047749/western-games-are-more-advanced-than-japanese
and that programming on the 360 is ALOT easier:
http://kotaku.com/5047718/guilty-gear-creator-says-xbox-360-development-is-easier

Let that be a wakeup call to Sony and Nintendo...

...

OMG! First look at yet another 1st party "hardocore" game from NINTENDO...themselves (Eternal Darkness and Geist both on the 'Cube being others). [Quick: queue the flying pigs.]

Bioshock PS3 has mandatory 10 minute 5GB install
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/10/bioshock-ps3-install-takes-10-minutes-4.98gb/
I guess that's not quite as bad as having to do that ... and then watching a half hour movie before you can actually play ... :cough:M:cough:S:cough:G:cough:4:cough
...damn my allergies are acting up again...

Story of the XBox 360 Defects

Very intersting read. My thoughts:

Microsoft are so rich that they can ride alsmost any stupid desision/bad product in the short term.

M$ fanboys make me sick, but boy they've paid for their blind support with many faulty XBoxs in some cases.

Never has their been such a pompous company in the computer hardware industry. Sony and Apple come close, but their machines are normally ready for launch (Sony: other than the Rumble controller, and fauly laptop batteries Apple's iPhone not having 3G).

I love the PS2 and am now reluctant to consider the PS3 until the mid life re-design. Hopefully back compatibility will be a cheaper proposition and Sony will see sense to re-implement it at this stage!
