@Lou

Seems beautyful yes, but watching youtube gameplay vids seems that you'll have a lot of loadings while playing it.

Sony announced the new smaller PS3 at $300 is coming this year. That's good. The 360 appears to be the only console this year that's gained marketshare. Though clearly Microsoft saw this coming as it eliminated the Pro consoles and the Elites are moving to $300.

The thin PS3 doesn't allow Linux installations.

Will this rocket the PS3 to Superstardom as MikeB predicted? We'll see what Christmas brings.

So what do you think? Do you want Blu-Ray or a much larger game library and better online experience this Christmas?

@BrianK

That's the end of dreams to have Amiga OS on the PS3 then The fact that the 'Other OS' function has been removed in the latest firmware means that Amiga OS isn't even a possibility! Why the change of heart from Sony? I'd love to have tried Yellow Dog Linux on the PS3 and it really did work for real world applications like cryptocracking-clusters/scientific modelling etc.

This Slim version is just for price cut reasons - No backwards compatibility re-enabled in software at the same time and 'Other OS' function removed! Not exactly adding value is it. The 60gb Uk version is STILL the model to own!

@BigD & BrianK

In other news, it's possible to skip Nintendo's system menu altogether and install your own OS on the Wii...

@Interesting

Too little, too late? Perhaps it is. I peronally don't see people flocking to a console because it's 1/3 smaller. A portable device, like a cell phone, sure. But the console simply sits there. We'll see if we're wrong this Christmas. I predicted the PS3 to beat the 360 by Christmas 2009 and was wrong so...

@Thread
Final Fantasy coming on 3 DVDs on the 360. I suspect it will come on 1 Blu-Ray for the PS3. I don't see this as a huge problem. (1) People need to pee, switching a DVD isn't too hard. (2) The 360 can record all 3 DVDs to its harddrive so switching can be minimized if not eliminated.

Sony has officially announced that they are no longer attempting to retrofit Backwards Compatibility in the non-harware back compatible PS3s (including the new Slim version)!!!

This really is the last straw they are not going to win any ex-PS2 owners with this 'will-they-won't-they' game! They use the excuse that users buying the PS3 cite the reason they bought it as "To play PS3games". Well no "insert horse manure swear word here" Sony ! the people who are really bothered about lack of PS2 compatibility are the ONES THAT HAVEN'T BOUGHT ONE!!!!!

Sony told us how important backwards compatibility was for the PS3. Then the PS3 came with even less and BC was put on 'life support'. Now Sony pulled the plug.

I doubt this was Sony's goal but from a market standpoint it seems the extra $ for the PS3 was for BC. Sony indeed is not making an upgrade path for the PS2 owners.

Within a market a company's and competitor's actions can be seen as motivators. Microsoft and Nintendo have better understood the market this time around and have made significant gains over last generation. Sony, OTOH, appears to have moved themselves from first plast last gen to last place this gen. They missed on pricing, launch, games, etc.

Rumors in a PS4 are starting to hit the street. Again rumor but people believe Sony might learn and actually be the first to launch the next gen console. IMO they should. Keep the PS2, kill the PS3 and include PS3 BC in the PS4.

"Confirmed - Xbox360 Elite to drop to $299 on September 1st"

It looks like the PS3 slim has some competition.

As a PS2 fan and retro fanboy, I really hope Sony get their fingers burnt going head to head with a cheaper XBox360 Elite! Alienbreed: Evolution is coming out first on the XBox, XBLA is a runaway sucess that Home and the Playstation Network cannot match and now Sony are basically trying to say that Retro Games suck anyway (although they're quite happy to sell Playstation 1 titles Online! Well I think you'll find that the Sony brand is synonymous with Backwards Compatibility and you really have shot yourself in the foot again. £299 does not buy allegiance to the brand but B.C. does!! Roll on the XBox720 and Wii HD "The final two nails in the coffin for Sony Entertainment"!

@BigD

"Times Online: It’s well known that Sony loses money on every PS3 it sells. Will that still be the case with the new machine?

Kaz: If you're just talking about the hardware alone, the quick answer is yes. That makes good headlines, but I don't actually know that that's the true nature of the business that we're all in, whether it's PlayStation, Xbox or the Wii. I think the better indicator is to look at the business as a whole platform, to ask: are you profitable in terms of the hardware, software and peripherals. And the answer to that question is yes on a gross profit level since the last fiscal year."
This answer kind of skates the question IMO. I think Kaz may be talking not about only the PS3 but the Playstation platform as a whole, including PS2.

PS3 sales are supposedly up 30%. Hopefully Sony's loss is less than the last console revision loss.

Of course the loss is less with the Slim! The only reason for the redesign was COST! Yes they made it more energy efficient, but primarily it is a smaller form factor made of cheaper materials with smaller components in smaller packaging! All these factor reduce cost! BUT THERE IS NO ADDED VALUE ADDED!!! No B.C., and no 'improved' third party OS support (that would help Hyperion) only the announcement of its removal! The XBox360 is kicking Sony's butt in this marketplace, it's cheaper, has better/more games is semi-back compatible with the original XBox for Doom3 etc and has an amazing live service! M$ have courted companies like Rockstar and to a lesser extent Team17 and built good relationships with them. Sony has alienated their core PS2 customers and the developers that have stuck by them since the PS1 days. Publishers like Activision have threatened ceasing develpoment for the PS3 (although now that it's cheaper they probably wont) and ID software guru John Carmack says that 'Rage' development is lagging behind on the PS3 - just like the C&C Red Alert 3 debarcle all over again.

SONY YOU'VE DROPPED THE BALL - Yeah, not to the degree that SEGA or COMMODORE did but bad enough to make you play catch up for the rest of the decade and well into the next one!

The Playstation Brand is not invincible and is worth considerably less due to Sony's stupid decision making, bad licencing agreements (Dual Shock 3), inability to code B.C. into software, non-existant advertising to the degree you'd swear from UK TV advertising that most games are only released on the XBox360 (even though they're multi-platform) and generally screwing a lot of things up!

Oh yeah, and you never released Twisted Metal Head On: Extra Twisted in Europe on the PS2 because of your long standing feud between SCEA (America) and SCEE (Europe)!!! You're two parts of the same company!! GET OVER YOURSELVES AND WORK TOGETHER!!!!

Bounce!

Maybe I'm missing something the industry seems to have just sighed a breath of relief that the PS3 is now cheaper, but it's a lesser console now. Amiga OS hasn't a hope of hell to be ported to it now, plus B.C. reinstated is a distant pipe dream! Any thoughts? Is everyone else on planet earth excited about this slightly smaller matt version of the PS3?

IMO the vast majority of the market could care less about size. More importantly is the price cut to $300.

It is a lesser console from the reasons you cite. The focus of consoles is consumer grade equipment. The vast majority of these care little about Linux or the Amiga. Sure the geeks do but they're a minority. As for BC, I think this is something people do care about. IMO if BC existed on the PS3 the PS2 hardware would be unlikely to sell. I believe Sony sees a larger gross profit from the PS2 so it makes sense to not canibalize the market at this juncture from the accountant view.

Actually the most exciting thing to me is Natal. If it's all it's cracked up to be we can begin the guesture based OS interfacing.

Crytek considers PS3's RSX GPU as "low end" compared to the other family of GPU's that they support.

Here's a video demo link for CryEngine 3 on Sony PS3

I am unaware of any official announcement, but retail circulars have made it clear that the Elite version will be $299 next week. Thanks for the links. The Crytek 'low end' charge appears to be countered by PS3 fans by blaming Crytek for failing to properly optimize for the Cell. For certainly if the Cell was used more effectively the 'low end' video wouldn't be a problem.

MikeB? No clue.

@fairlanefastback

The $299 Elite is supposed to hit this weekend. There is some good and bad with this. First the bad... The newer Elites appear to copy the PS3 by not providing HD cabling with the unit. The Elites also lose the free games. The good -- The Elite replaces the Pro. So there will be 2 skus to choose from. The Pro drops to $249, until the unit sells out. The Elites are mostly bundles right now. Elites presently include Halo 3 / Fable 2 as are cables. Likely a bundle will come back for Christmas. What's the sales commerical "Never a better time to buy!

It seems that the PS3 Slim's Blu-ray player is actually a tiny bit slower than the 60GB PS3 classic.
