@BrianK

Hopefully these nasty reliability problems will finally get properly addressed soon, it's high time. With reports stating Microsoft knew about RRoD issues and testimonials revealing they knew about the disc scratching issues as well, IMO some court should kick Microsoft's butt and allow people to either return their 360s for a full refund or receive a brand new reliable 360.

Problems are still far too common:

I mean well before launch, IMO the lawsuit quotes are very damning. I can't imagine why there's not a bigger outcry about this in the United States...

Quite impressive:

"Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which was released exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in June, continued to be one of the company's top performers. The top-rated action adventure sold more than 4.5 million units in 2008, shifting approximately 500,000 additional copies in the October-December quarter."

Looks like MGS4 will become a PS3 exclusive to sell over 5 million units this year. Hopefully Killzone 2 will beat this even!

Hands on review of The Conduit:

Quote:
At a recent hands-on demo, the game’s art director, Matt Corso, was dropping all kinds of techie jargon into my tape recorder. But I can’t blame him; the game looks great, sporting draw-distances, bump-mapping, lighting, shadowing and particle effects that wouldn’t look out of place on the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360.

All that graphical panache was in full force while I was playing through a portion of the aliens-invade-Washington, D.C. title earlier this week.

I found myself treading a crowded urban street as the mysterious Mr. Ford, who works for the equally shadowy Trust, effortlessly shooting insect-like enemy "Drudge" and blowing up vehicles, all while taking in the pretty visual presentation.

Most impressive, especially for the Wii, were the explosions, which filled the screen in fiery detail on more than one occasion. But even tiny touches, like the realistic glare off the front of a newspaper vending machine, stand-out on the Wii. Also, the cool reload animations—an important part of any shooter—had me restocking my ####nal just to check it out again and again.

Just as impressive as the art direction, were the solid controls; I haven’t felt this comfortable pointing the remote like a gun since strapping on Samus’ arm canon in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Character movement with the nunchuck also felt fluid, aiming was spot-on, and even the camera managed to keep up with the quick-paced action.

It will likely still feel awkward to the mouse-and-keyboard crowd and gamepad jockeys—this isn’t the end-all, be-all control scheme for shooters—but The Conduit has definitely hit the sweet spot for shooter gaming on the Wii.

If you don’t like the default controls, you can always customize to your alien-thwarting heart’s content.

One of the title’s more innovative features is its almost stubborn insistence on meeting every single player’s style and preference in terms of personalizing the controls.

You can map pretty much whatever action you want wherever you like; not just the obvious stuff like moving and firing, either, but even things like what motion you prefer to use when tossing grenades can be tuned.

This feature also extends to the HUD elements, which can be placed anywhere on the screen, and options such as look sensitivity and turning speed. Best of all, you needn’t kick out to the main menu to tweak—it can all be done in-game.

The Conduit’s bar-raising visuals, tight gameplay, conspiracy-riddled alien invasion yarn, and gamer-loving customization options make it a real stand-out on the Wii’s 2009 line-up.

Because of technical limitations, a Wii game will likely never match the jaw-dropping power of a PS3 or Xbox 360 shooter, but The Conduit comes as close as the hardware may ever get.

Perhaps the drives are different in Europe or something? Certainly personal experience doesn't speak to the extent of the problem. However, I grabbed a couple of my first games. They have survived 2+ years on a launch console and nearly 2 years on the 2nd gen console. There are a couple light scratches but nothing worse then CDs and DVDs about 4 year old that I have. So why would I complain about a problem that doesn't impact me? Perhaps DVD drive used for Europe are worse than USA one's?

Impressive looking. Hadn't heard any buzz about it. Also, check out the Madworld video from SEGA. Kiddie console indeed...

Lou is right, you won't be disappointed, just be sure to purchase at least one of these games:
- Zelda Twilight Princess
- Mario Galaxy
- Resident Evil IV Wii edition
- No more Heroes
- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Xbox 360 RRoD returns - issue getting out of hand?

When NXE was released in Nov you posted a similar article that the latest updates were bricking consoles. Looking at return reports and rates it seems that no statistical difference was discerned. Actually returns appear to have decreased. It's dubious that an update which is less of a change than NXE has a greater impact.

The issue clearly is not resolved as more consoles will fail we don't know which ones. But as newer consoles come on the market the overall rates are decreasing because of the fixes made in the newer consoles.

I'm very bullish on Killzone 2 MikeB... I think this is going to be good for Sony. Also, some journalists who have had sneak peaks at Unchartered 2 say it is looking amazing!

What's all this PS3, XBOX, wii you gyus keep talking about? Just bought my PS2 with 50 original games, 4 pads, a steering wheel for 220¤, maybe in 4 or 5 years I will buy one of these new generation consoles.

Thought this was an interesting quote from your link:

Quote:
This sounds similar to what happened on the PS3 a while back where consoles were freezing after a firmware update.

So far my Xbox has never frozen up. But my PS3 has, multiple times on various firmware levels, usually when I leave it on overnight.

@fairlanefastback

It only sounds similar because media exaggerated a lot. A small minority of people had been able to update in time before it was removed within hours.

Of these people who downloaded the update roughly 0% of people were affected. Of the very few who were affected the error virtually everyone was able to fully recover their system by re-formatting the harddrive.

Really there are very few comparisons to be made in those two cases.

Interesting trade offs.
Xbox360: Take off harddrive, return console, wait 2-3 weeks, get new console, play all saved games.
PS3: Wait a day or so, reformat harddrive, play no more saved games.

ROTFLMAO!

NeoGAF is quick with the troll-bat. A credible pro-Wii journalist with substantial credentials was banned for saying the Wii is capable of good-looking games.

Bunch of elitists if you ask me.

So you are discrediting information from a link that *you* yourself provided now. Just because we noticed a negative line about the PS3 in the article? So you'd have us believe that the author was thoughtful and accurate about the Xbox 360 in their writing, but totally wrong about the PS3? How silly.

Quote:

Thats pretty bad! And like I said, as an owner of both systems, so far the Xbox 360 has been much more reliable. Again, I am a Sony shareholder. I wish this was not the case. But reality is reality. Do you even own a 360?
