@jkirk

I've seen a few, and...

My grandmother passed away in February, and a few days later when I was out of the house, my partner said she's smelt perfume and saw something by my daughters bedroom door.
My 2 year old daughter pointed to the shape and asked what it was and she also smelt the perfume.

I think it was my grandmother making a final farewell.

Our brains, even when they're perfectly healthy and undamaged, mix stuff up all the time. Have you ever experienced déjŕ vu, for example? Your brain mistaking the present for the past? (Some would say it is related to past lives and such, choose the theory you think is more likely).

The Celestine Prophecy I feel has a good description of deja-vu. In the book it is said that you suffer deja-vu when you are on your birth path. You have a vision of your life before you are born and when you cross that path, you get deja-vu.

I have suffered deja-vu in places I have never been or seen before, so how could my mind be mixing up past memories ?

I said "minor brain malfunction

I think you'll find some people are more receptive of seeing/feeling 'paranormal events' than others, its the opposite of a malfunction I'd say.

We've lost the ablility to do a lot of things over the ages, as we get lazier and build machines to do everything for us.

i do and have had experiences. What about ya'll?

Hummmmmm - well - back in the early eighties there used to be a monthly show called "Rock Night" on the third German TV channel.

My best friend Winnie and I used to watch this show with a box of beer at our side.

In Feb '85 I moved to a new flat and as a "Rock Night" was scheduled for the first weekend in April (april 5th), I thought it would be a good idea to buy a big box of beer and invite Winnie for this "Rock Night" as an housewarming party.

I several times tried to ring him in the 2 weeks before - but in vain.

During the night from 3rd to 4th of april I had an frightening dream. I dreamt my friend Winnie came into my sleeping room and woke me up with these words:

"Hey Dandy, I just dropped in to say good bye. My life is spoilt anyway and I have to go now."
I replied: "Don't talk such an bullsh_t, man! You're way too youg with your 28 years for such an crap!"
"No, no", he said, "my journey ends here - but you will make it! You will marry Petra and be happy, but I have to leave now. It's all right and it's the best for all of us!"

After that he disappeared and I slept on.

When I got up and stepped into my living room, I noticed a plant in a pot that laid right in the middle of the room - two and a half meters away from the location it normally stands - with the plant broken into three pieces.

I was wondering what could have happened that the plant was thrown right across the room, but several loose sheets of paper next to the place where the flowerpot used to stand, still lay there - untouched.

So I was sure that wind could *NOT* have been the reason.

For a moment I was wondering if there could be a connection between my wierd dream and the broken plant - but quickly put that thought aside again and forgot about it until the afternoon.

In the afternoon I went to visit my parents. While I sat in their living room, the phone rang and my ex girlfriend asked for my help, as she came home from work and found that the hose of her washing machine was broken and the water was already running through the staircase.

I went to her and helped to remove all the wet carpeting in her flat, when my eyes got attracted by the TV-programm-magazine on her table, opened at the page for "Rock Night".

At once I remembered that I still had to reach Winnie for the invitation.

So I rang his own number - in vain again.

Then I tried his parents number and his Father answered my call.

I said: "Mr. Kristen, does Winnie happen to be there?"

He answered: "Hummmm - Winnie? He died last night..."

That was the moment when the receiver fell off my hands...

Ah yes - and today I'm happily married with Petra since 15 years.

This was one of my experiences...

i do agree this may have something to do with some latent ability. possibly psychic in nature but unknown to the people having the sightings/experience. until science can isolate what causes one person to see things like this and others not see, debates will continue. though it is unlikely science can explain it since any scientist that tries gets isolated from the rest of the scienctific community.

Not mixing up past memories, mistaking the past for the present. A bit like the time-stamp of a file being wrong. Thinking that you are remembering it from the past, when you actually experienced it only a moment ago.

And I agree that some people are more receptive of experiencing paranormal events, but my reasoning is not the same. It is always easier to see something if you are looking for it, or indeed, if you want to see it. Just like when seing shapes in inkspots and cloudscapes, it is often your own mind and reasoning which determines what you see, as much as or more than the object being observed. For example, if I was driving in a car, got the idea to adjust the mirror and then saw a potential lethal collision being avoided, I would simply call it luck, and drive on. I would not start to think about where I got the idea to adjust the mirror, probably filling out the blanks where my memory was spotty. You know how you rarely are able to remember what you did or thought the previous moment when you are moving by routine, right?.

Anyway, I do not intend to discredit those of you who believe in the paranormal. I just want you to understand why I do not believe in it, in spite of numerous stories of experiences. I just think there are more probable explanations.

I would never make a claim as idiotic as "everybody who believes in ghosts have brain damage". I'm sorry that you would think that of me. :-/

OK, I might have drawn a little drastic conclusions, sorry.

Thanks for clearing out the difference betweeen proof and evidence, it is always good to learn something new.

If I have understood things correctly you don´t beleave in anything that can´t be proven with current theories. Does that mean that you belong to those that beleave that we will never be able to travel faster than light because our current "main stream" theories doesn´t support the idea?

Well - if you can think of "more probable explanations" - what "more probable explanations" do come to your mind when you read my story above?

I'm looking for one since april 4th, 1985...

That's ok. I just needed to clear it up. I know I can seem arrogant at times, but I actually do my best to understand and respect other people's opinions.

No.

And it's not that I don't believe anything which can't be proven, either. It's just that I will have to go with what seems more likely to me. And based on what little I know, there seems to be more evidence to support the mind playing tricks on one than the existence of ghosts.

Well, if you wish, I can look at the story and try to poke holes in it, but it will have to wait until after work.

What about documented cases, such as what the film 'The Entity' was based on ?

Okay, I can see where this is heading, so I think I will just withdraw from this thread right away. If you are all going to throw various occult experiences at me and demand that explain them all in order to justify my scepticism, it is going to take far too much of my time to be worth it. Especially considering that it will most likely not really serve any purpose, as people tend to stick with the explanations they prefer to believe anyway.

I've never heard of the "Entity" case, and I really can't be arsed to start reading up on it, evaluating the sources, and develop theories around it. If this is a well known case, you can probably just Google for a sceptics view or alternative explanation.

The entity case is the best known documented paranormal case ever most likely, and must have been frightning for Carlotta Moran.
It was made into a film (loosely).

I am interesting in your view, which is why I asked. no offence meant.

Enid and Rebecca are two intimate friends....... ' Ghost World' appears like an attempt to show the crude reality to us of the adolescence.

Something along those lines

Hi treblesix,

Let's examine some facts.

There are currently ~6.2 billion humans on Earth.

That would make, eventually, the same amount of ghosts.

I'll take a wild guess that there have been at least 4 billion humans alive, and now gone.

We should be up to our necks in ghostly shenanigans, and sightings.

So, conclusion:

Ghosts are temporary?
Not anyone can become a ghost?
They get bored and leave?
There IS somewhere better for them to go, so they go?
Some unknown factor/influence/being comes and takes them away, whether they want to leave or not?
Only certain people are different in some way to be able to "sense" their presence, and possibly communicate with them?

Why are there no ghost dolphins, pigs, dogs, or our closest DNA relatives, monkeys/apes/gorillas, etc.?

Will Koko become a ghost?

@treblesix

"The Entity" is the name of the move...

The correct title of the book is "The EnMity"

And your correct.... Pretty damn scary stuff.

I read that book when I was going through my "Dennis Wheatly" stage.

Toyah fitted in nicely with all stuff as well.. (kinda scary she's now involved in childrens TV)

getting back to the Enmity. It's based on a true account of supernatural rape.

Kay, It really is worth reading the book.

The film was good too but imho its never as deep as the written word.

I remember reading "The devil rides out" by Dennis Wheatly and was completely enthralled. Then I saw it had been made into a film and naturally watched it...

The film was utter crap.
