New X-Ray Machine Produces “Nude” Images; Used in Airport Security

From: Look to where the waters meet in the midst of the land. It is here! St. Louis, Missouri, USA!

This article describes a new x-ray machine—used in airport security—that produces “nude” images of those being scanned. This disturbs me. The minds of people are easily corrupted, and it would not take much for the minds of those doing the scanning to be taken far, far away from airport security. In my opinion, there will be problems of prurience stemming from the use of these machines, and people—especially young women—will be violated as a result.

@Billsey

I hate to brake it to you Billsey but being "Nude" is perfectly natural state, none of us we born with our clothing on.

Normally I am all for privacy, I don’t like the ever increasing amount of monitoring we seen to be under but in the case of Airport security I think scanners are an infinitely more sensible approach than putting people with guns on a pressurised aircraft.

I agree with Dyloc here, why is the human race ashamed of their bodies ?

As for people abusing the scanners, it would become a mediocre task after the novelty wore off, and @ the end of the day seen one set of male + female genitals, u've seen em all.

I'd sure rather be scanned like this, than have some terrorist pull some weapon out of his butt during a flight.

From the point of view of privacy I would much rather be scanned than have some one I don’t know or trust frisk me to make sure I am to carrying and concealed weapons. I personally feel it’s less invasive to have someone look at me than touch me.

why can't they use a traditional output such as bones and the object in relation to the bones. or have a piece of software do the exam and forward it to a human if and only if something is fishy.

unless someone brings a camera to film it for resale to people that has no buisness seeing them.

i would rather come up with something a little less violating. it can't be that difficult.

@Billsey

Nothing sexual here. Perhaps you should see the images first before anyone objects. It's not Penthouse or Playboy snaps here, we are talking vague outlines and shades. Certainly not pornographic or the like.

And as a hippie, I've seen more naked bodies than a porn film star and I can tell you that once you've seen a few hundred, the beauty is gone.

Besides, modern cameras are able to penetrate most clothing already. All you have to do is type in "naked celeb" in a search engine and you'll see thousands of papperazzi pictures of women aparently showing their wares even though if you were there in person, you would just see clothes.

Oh, perhaps I should say that as a hippie who traveled a lot, I've had more fingers up my bum than Marc Almond and there is bugger all (Nice choice of words. - Steve) you can do to stop them doing that in the name of airport security. Quite frankly, I'm looking forwards to them only looking at naked pictures of me!

Film what? Have you SEEN pictures taken with a THz camera? It`s only a representation not an accurate image - about as pornographic as the annoying thing`s manhood.

@Billsey

What worries me, is the radiation.
Since I do work with X-rays, I'm very much aware of how much radiation regular x-ray machines produce.
I really don't want to be radiated at airports

Even if it is "low-radiation", one should consider this example:

Take a plane from USA to Europe.
You get radiated at the airports, and during the flight,( from cosmic radiation.)
One or two trips isn't much, but it can be quite a lot, if you fly regurlarly, like businessmen do.

From the article:
Quote:
The devices can potentially be used to screen hundreds of millions of air travelers each year,

Right, if one of 10000 passengers get cancer due to these scans, it will be quite a lot.

What does the US Radiation Protection Authorities say

@tomazkid

But if you didn't have airports you'd all still have to travel by road. I estimate that bandits would kill on in 5000 so you've still got better odds flying.

@DruidPoet

Isn't driving more or less considered to be one of the basic human rights?

Don't mess with peoples cars

Being that recent rankings of security show that airports are as secure, at best, as well as prior to 9/11 events perhaps this will get them to pay attention more.

@tomazkid

It doesn`t use x-rays, it operates around 1 terahertz (somewhere between radio and visible light) - EM at this wavelength is already flying around all over the place from the sun anyway. This thing is really just a video camera that detects that wavelength instead of visible light

and even that would be unacceptable in the us on television.
also though people like you and me might not think so some people will undoubtably think differently.

It's a worrying concept when you come to realise that everyone is naked under their clothes... ewwww!

what is going to stop that anyway. afaik this looks at the surface level not under the skin. ya need x-ray for that.

Las Vegas NV is one of the airports testing this new system. What happen's in vegas stays in vegas

In fact, terahertz rays can pass through your body no problem, only metal stops them afaik. They can even be "focussed" to different densities allowing, for example, a quick peek in your pockets then deeper to your bones etc.
Apparently tumours under the skin are simple to spot with them as well :o)

edit:
Reading deeper in to the article, I see that I`m talking about something different hehe.
I`ll look for some weblinks.
